About
Curse of the Sea Rats is a ‘ratoidvania’ platform adventure with lovingly crafted, hand-drawn animations. Embark on the epic journey of four prisoners of the British empire, transformed into rats by the notorious pirate witch, Flora Burn. To regain their human bodies, they will have to fight dangerous bosses, uncover the secrets of the vast Irish coast, and ultimately capture the witch who cursed them.

Beautiful 2D, hand-drawn animation breathes life into the game's cast of characters - inspired by classic animated films and reminiscent of the golden age of 2D platforming. These animations combine seamlessly with detailed 3D environments enhanced by light and shadow effects to create a 2.5D platforming experience of incredible quality.

Chart your progress through a huge, non-linear world as you attempt to track down the pirate witch who cursed you. Shipwrecked on the coast of Ireland in the 18th Century, you'll need more than just your swashbuckling skills to forge your path to freedom.

Discover four playable characters – David Douglas, Buffalo Calf, Bussa, and Akane Yamakawa. Each character brings their unique fighting style to help you overcome the challenges posed by enemies and the environment! Play alone or with up to three friends in local co-op mode.

Each character has strengths and weaknesses. You'll be able to improve their abilities as your adventure progresses - unlocking new special skills, boosting your offence and defence, or learning powerful magics!

A labyrinthine network of hundreds of pathways, rooms and discoveries lie ahead, in a substantial quest with over 12 hours of content. Can you master each character’s playstyle, find all the hidden secrets, and unlock each of the game’s multiple endings?
PLEASE NOTE: Multiple controllers are required for local multiplayer mode

This is a good game. As someone who played it twice (both before and after the quality of life improvements) I can say it is a good game. It has its flaws with the combat and exploration but being labyrinthian metriodvania, issues with exploration is a given. The humor with the writing and dialogue is some of the best I've seen/heard in a video game like this. The visuals are still so so good with the animation and character models. Its was never too hard or too easy as long as you take your time and focus on getting past the enemies. There were some frustrating parts with the jumping and gauging distance did make me angry but nothing too severe epically after the QOL updates. This game has come a long way since its launch and I'm glad to see it still holding strong.
Curse of the Sea Rats is a very nice metroidvania game where all the ship crew were cursed and turned into rats, you venture in order to find a way to stop the curse and take on the enemy pirate crew that caused all this hassle. I would first like to highlighted the bosses in the game as I loved each single one of them, they were very nice and very unique, gives you a tough challenge especially early game when you first start. the art design for each one along with the enemies and main characters were amazing. The soundtracks during your adventure and the boss fights were top notch, the pirate and sea music we are used to. There are lots of secrets and collectibles to find along your journey. Don't let the mixed reviews fool you, all of the bugs that was addressed has been finally fixed in the last patch 1.3.7 which makes the game super playable and flawless. I didn't face a single bug during my playthrough, hats off to the Devs. Very recommended metroidvania with an Overall Rating of 10/10
What a banger. Art is great. Story is cool. We need more pirate MVs imo. Exploration is great and the dialogue is actually good enough to keep my interest. 4 characters to choose from with different attacks. Music is excellent. They managed to cram so many cool and piratey biomes into this. Fun bosses. Automatic map markers for important npcs. My biggest complaints are tracking quests is not anywhere in the game menus so you have to remember most things. Thankfully npcs are marked. Combat can also feel a little stiff but you get used to it. You lose teleport at the end of the game so going back to collect what you missed is a massive pain. Your save reloads right before the last boss which is kinda a shame. I would've loved to 100% this but I ended at 93% at the 4 hour mark. Going to end up in my B tier.
Genre
Ein Metroidvania
Story
Achievements
Es gibt insgesamt 35 Erfolge. Hierfür muss man u.a. alle 4 Endings sehen, 100% der Map aufdecken, alle Skilltress von jeden Charakter maximieren, alle Schätze (Collectibles) finden, alle Bosse besiegen sowie das Bestiarium komplett vervollständigen
Pro/Contra
+ Gute Story + Ordentliches & passendes Voice Acting mit verschiedenen Akzenten + Gute Musik + Gutes Gameplay + Schöne Animationen + Nette Hintergründe + Recht viele Secrets zu entdecken + Map ist sehr gut gestaltet (man kann selber Marker setzen was immer ein Pluspunkt ist) + Coole Boss Kämpfe + Optionale Boss Kämpfe + 2 Spielmodi (Klassisch & Jolly Roger wobei bei letzterem kein Contact Damage ist was ich gut finde) + Achievements + Sammelkarten + XBox 360 Controller Support
Fazit

Follow Main group
 Follow Second group
 Follow third group
Game is okay but... Awesome art.
For once I don't have any suggestions, the combat is simply worthless
It's a pity that most people had to compare Curse of the Sea Rats to other arguably better metroidvanias. I started the game with zero expectations, and I can honestly say I enjoyed the playtime I spent on it. Sure, there's a lot that feels lacking, particularly with the story, dialogue and voice acting. Part of me wants to think the developers were trying to emulate the vibe some of those 90s 2D platformers had (like Captain Claw, which coincidentally, also features a medieval-pirate world with anthropomorphic characters). When it comes to the gameplay, everything is pretty basic and straight-forward. You have 4 playable characters who manage to be somewhat unique when it comes to their playstyle, despite their simple skill trees. You have a decently huge map to explore. You have a bunch of collectibles and side-quests that can ocassionally boost your stats permanently, and even affect the ending you get, encouraging you to 100% the game. And finally, you have a survival mode that has been added recently. I tried it for a bit and it was overall fun. If you're used to metroidvanias and care more about the challenge, you'll probably find Curse of the Rats to lean more on the casual side. There was only one Boss I had some trouble with, but it was an optional one. So yeah, the game is mostly easy, even with the whole "Dark Souls-Point-Recovery" mechanic. I've yet to try co-op, but I imagine it can make the game a lot more fun (and easier). Best thing about the game is definitely the aesthetics, animations and music, which is what probably drove most people to buy this. If you're willing to value the game for what it is, you'll most likely enjoy it like I did.
Normally I would recommend this game, because its a very enjoyable metroidvania, where you can also level up and learn new abilities and play 4 characters that are different and have different skill trees, fighting style etc. but there is ONE big issue with this game and it has a GAME BREAKING BUG!!! After you finnish the fight against Flora and you get her snake item, this is when the game breaking bug starts. You cannot teleport anymore, even in Jolly Roger Mode (easy mode) and without the teleporting the game is barely playable and even if you finnish the end boss later on, the game just resets and you start where you last saved. This is what ruined the game experience for me, because there was still little quests that I wanted to finnish, but I won't anymore. If you like to play this game anyway, play Buffalo Calf she is the best out of the 4 characters, because of her ranged and fast attacks. I finnished the game with the character David Douglas, as he is tanky and has life steal passive. If you need a challenge play the other two characters (Bussa and Akane) The game also works on the Steam Deck fine
