Even for an Arkhouse game, this was a very masochistic experience, it's shame because this game has a great story and I wish more people could experience it - it's almost like the developer does not want anyone to see his artwork. It took me slightly over 4 hours to complete, it's pretty long for a 2D bullet-hell, give or take a few hours depending on your reflexes. The narrative is connected to at least 2 other Arkhouse games, so if you skip those you might have a hard time understanding the importance of recurring characters. Even though I love the narrative in his games, Arkhouse stories are very metaphorical, there is some space for personal interpretation. Unfortunately, the difficulty is not fair, I don't mind challenging gameplay, but a lot of it has to do with confusing hitboxes, punishing checkpoint system, and the need for excessive stage repetition. If you don't play carefully you can potentially create a very poor checkpoint with low HP, although sometimes you can reload the game and go a bit further back. Arkhouse games don't have a particularly good review record, partially because the developer is somewhat of a misunderstood artist and you have to get used to his game design. Similar to a developer like Rail_Slave, he makes unique games that push the envelope; deconstruction is probably not the best word to describe it, perhaps 'cerebral' is more appropriate if that makes sense. I personally play them for the aesthetic experience, to me they are more like paintings than video games, that being said, I am not entirely sure why the game need to be so difficult, I know it makes sense within the narrative, but even with a few small changes, you could drastically make them more accessible. The artwork is very unique to this developer, there is nobody else out there that draws characters and backgrounds like that, it's almost like visualizing a deteriorating mind, very unique visual experience if nothing else. Every arkhouse game is very atmospheric, and the soundtrack is always good as well.
Pros:
+ enjoyable story and characters, helps if you played previous games + as with all ArkHouse titles, unique art and immersive world + I didn't love the soundtrack as much, but still pretty decent + good amount of content, some unique gameplay elements + lots of boss fights
Feedback:
Very unfair difficulty - this entire game feels like the canyon flight in Saturn Quest which puzzles me because the developer agreed that it was kinda BS, you just have to know what is coming to deal with it.I think it would help if every checkpoint would at least increase your health back to 25 if lower, that way you don't make those 1 HP checkpoints. Visually the game is a complete clusterfaq of bullets, there is no way to play it properly without memorizing where you need to be, and the hitbox on the character is not exactly intuitive. Special power - I think visually it's not very clear what it does. Perhaps it should be a bit more reliable for the regular Joe. Overall Thoughts: 6/10 Can I just say something, and this is just my personal opinion, as someone who purchased several Arkhouse games and loves the universe, I play your games for art and story, I don't care if they are super hard, it just prevents me from enjoying your artwork to the fullest. It's okey if you want to make a hard game, but I don't think it needs to be so hard that players consistently stop playing your games. As always the story and visuals were pretty good, but the game really makes you work for it. Probably my favorite Arkhouse game as far as artwork goes, I think the coloring was very good this time, not as blurry. Oh this game... I WANTED to like this game. I SO wanted to! The art style and the music was interesting! And while the game was hard, it was still fun! But then in the middle, the game jumped the shark with a m weird maze and minesweeper level and PLATFORMING levels which made no sense! And the levels starting getting VERY cheap and annoying! Sadistically cheap! Being hit out of nowhere by attacks you can't see! Weakpoints that you have to guess to find! And the story jumping the shark like that! And the most annoying thing being much of the non-story text being backwards! That made things VERY annoying to understand! If the odd non shmup levels were cut, this would be a decent Dark Souls-like shooter! But with all of it, and I can't recommend this game as other than an oddity to be examined.
Like with all Arkhouse Telegraph games this is one that you will either love or hate. For me, this is his best game so far. It has already recognizable art style and music which are excellent. And it is not just a shoot'em up like the description says. You will find puzzles and short platforming sections here as well. Overall, Cube Gothic is like a tribute to every game this developer made before: there are some sections with gameplay you can find in Saturn Quest, a short tribute to Dark Dreams RHN and so on. There are some puzzles incorporated in boss fights and even a minesweeper styled labryrinth (also, there is a basic one that you usually find in puzzle books). It might sound like just a mishmash of ideas but the game actually wins from this. And, truth be told, he did experiment in all of his games which is exactly what makes them so unique. I recommend you to try this game especially if you liked previous Arkhouse titles. Remember, though: like all of this developer's games it is very hard. Not at the level of D1896 but still enough to possibly make players rage quit despite having abundance of checkpoints. Shouldn't scare old school gamers, though.
Horrible keyboard controls that you can't change, no mouse support. Most text in the game is reversed (who the ♥♥♥♥ came up with this) so prepare your mirrors (I used face camera on my phone) and you don't even have enough time to read it without mirror or phone because this text dissapears by itself after several seconds (which is not enough to read it by yourself). The game tells you that it's a third game in trilogy, if that's true than why the ♥♥♥♥ there is not a word about this on Store page? Gameplay is ridiculously difficult despite what Store page says. If you, like me, play Shoot Em Ups's very rarely and have little experience in them, you're ♥♥♥♥♥♥ and will have problems even on first level. Each hit takes more than 1 HP which means that instead of 99 HP you have much less of hits you're allowed to take, so don't think that there is an easy mode in this game. Also, you retain HP between level phases. Managed to get to boss with few HP? Good like fighting it with only few hits available. Overall it's a pretentious, pointlessly difficult game with weird design choices and nice visuals. Are the visuals worth the pain you have to go through? I made my choice.
Neat
I cannot recommend this game to anyone because all the important menu text is backwards, presumably as an "artistic decision". It is so disorienting that I refunded the game, and it likely makes the game unplayable for dyslexics. Shame. I really like the art and music.
From "Seal of the Curse" to "D1896" and now "Cube Gothic", the entire journey was great. The visuals and the music is amazing to me and the controls are pretty good. The dialogue in between stages was cheesy at times, but was still able to follow the plot. The bosses are cool as well, but I got a bit stuck on certain puzzle aspects due to not paying attention. Had a great time start to finish and plan on going through it again ( still need to finish D1896 ). I hope there is a way for them to get Seal of the Curse on STEAM as well, another fantastic game.
Follow my curator page for more recommendations!
I really wanted to like this game. I love the aesthetics, but the apparently intentional design choice of having almost all of the text in this game flipped backwards, including when it shows you what the controls are, is beyond dumb. There are huge chunks of text that you can't read unless you somehow are able to read backwards quickly. The only way to keep up with what the story is, would be by recording your gameplay and then flipping the video afterward. Additionally, there aren't any settings (and the game is painfully loud so you'll need to resort to Windows' volume mixer very quickly), you aren't able to rebind keys and some of the default bindings are awful, the puzzles I saw in my short time were nonsensical, and there are frequently unfair difficulty spikes where you're getting hit from attacks you can't see. It's a shame because it seems like these could be easy fixes, but given that the game has never had an update since release, I don't think that's going to happen.
The visuals, the art and the music are gorgeous, the story is interesting, but the hitboxes are bad. This is beyond artistic decisions in my opinion, is just bad game design. Nevertheless, a beautiful game I can't recommend.
As surreal and tough as nails as it is, I'm glad i toughed it out to the end of this game. wonderfully dark and mysterious and with an interesting story to match with it. Well...the main problem and elephant in the room would be the difficulty, if your not a masochist for unfairly difficult bullet hells, this really isn't the game for you. But there was a strong amount of satisfaction and full on excitement i felt every time i managed to get one step closer to the end of this insane game. Recommend if you like surreal visuals and can stomach some hellish difficulty. Also nominated this game for visuals
