Reviews
The positive reviews for this game have to either be the developer's friends, or shills. This game is so basic and bland that I'm struggling to find anything to say about it, aside from the fact it looks and plays like Babby's First Sidescroller Game made with Game Maker 6 from 2004. Kindly avoid this game, please and thank you.
Excelente trabalho!!
A review copy was provided by the developer.
🔶 Railgunners is a shoot them up, defeat enemies and boss in 17 levels . 🔶
Graphics (6 / 10) :
The graphics are okay, some nice animated backgrounds, varying from level to level. Some lack of animation for your ships and enemy’s ships.
Screenshot : Oil factory

Gameplay (5 / 10) :
The gameplay is simple, perhaps too simple, only movement, primary shot, and secondary shot (limited powerful attack). No shield attack or dodge movement, and your ship is very slow. You don’t have health, but an energy system that also improves your primary shot power. You get energy by killing enemies, and lose energy overtime by taking damage, and you will die if energy levels reach zero. This can easily make the game unbalanced, making you prone to dying, and making it harder to get a good weapon whilst on low energy, and in general you need to be aggressive to win. There are different types of enemies, from weak ones; to stronger ones with multiples shots; some invincible mines that you need to dodge with your slow ship (I hate them!); to boss fights at end of some levels. In general, they are well done, with good patterns, but you need to focus on attack because of the energy system.
Screenshot : I hate these mines !
Between levels, you can choose upgrades giving you more power (more damage, more defense, less energy lost over time etc.), and six secondary weapons to choose. I like the upgrades, but only two can be equipped at once. It would have been nice to have more upgrade slots available further in the game.
Screenshot : A upgrade system, but only 2 slots availables ...
There are three different ships, one offensive; one with more speed; and one with a mixture of the two, but in general the offensive is the best because the speed difference between all three ships are pretty much the same.
Price (6 / 10) :
The game cost three euros, has seventeen levels, and will take around two hours to complete.
Story/Music/Optimisation (3,5 / 10) :
A basic story, which has French translation available. The music sounds cheap and repetitive and sound effects for shots, menu, and in game are generally poor or nonexistent Frame rates are capped at 30 fps which gives a lack of fluidity especially because your ship moves so slow. (played on i5 / 2 Go VRAM / 8 Go RAM) There are many bugs, including some enemy destruction particles that remain on the screen even after the level is completed. I had to relaunch the game to fix this. Progress in a level don’t appear when you choose the offensive ship. I had a soft lock after the first boss was killed, leaving the game on an infinite loop, which required a reboot and lost all level progression. I had to launch the game in English to fix this problem, whereas my first selected language was French.
Final Note (5.1 / 10) :
🔶 Railgunners is a very simple shoot em up which lacks features, has a disappointing upgrade system, multiples bugs, and just doesn’t feel smooth whilst playing. Can’t recommend in its current state 🔶 💚💚💚 : - Ok graphics with nice multiples background depending of the level. - Some nice boss fight. ❌❌❌ : - The energy system that make the game required to play aggressive to much and you can die too easely .. - You’re ship is too slow and no defensive move (no shield / no dash / dodge system) - Weak limited upgrade system. - Lack of fluidity with multiples bugs. It's like an update of one of the very early arcade games from the 70's or early 80's with severely constrained movement and firepower so you have to make every move and shot count. This gameplay is very much an acquired taste nowadays and not what you might expect from the stylish pixel art presentation. But if you've wished for a more cerebral shmup experience rewarding precision and patience without piling on the complexity, this is one to watch!
well, this is sad. I'd had my eyes on Railgunners for several years now--so I was pretty amped when I received review code for it. granted, I'm not the biggest enthusiast of bullethell shmups (but I like them and have played quite a few), so your mileage may vary if you are a diehard fanatic of this genre. it does have very nice pixel art, music, and sound effects. but to me... ugh, it just feels like it still isn't ready for release. my immediate first impressions weren't good. the opening cutscene is filled to the brim with ridiculous typos. some of them are minor, like using "it's" when it should be "its," but some of them are just, like... did the devs not run this through spell check? c'mon, "destroying everything on ther [sic] path"? "escape into a secrect [sic] underground base"? I know that this is a passion project that has been in the works for years--but get a beta reader for your script, good god. then there's the energy system. (and it's not fun like the Massen song.) once you get to a boss, they are bullet sponges who one-shot you if you haven't built up a combo meter--combo which, near as I can tell, is doled out arbitrarily. so you can get into this lengthy fight with the first boss, who has a few cheap attacks (like the chasing laser beam followed up by a faster chasing laser beam which outspeeds you and is barely telegraphed). you could totally ace this after getting used to the patterns and whatnot, but I just got tired of the tedium. it wasn't fun and challenging, it was just a bland battle, as far as I'm concerned. the typos could certainly be fixed, and I see that there have been continued updates since launch, so I hope that these things do in fact get tightened up. but I just did not have a good time with it, and won't be returning, in all likelihood.
