About
You play Ethelyn Dax, Galactic Bounty Hunter extraordinaire. Finally settling in for a long-awaited vacation on the resort world of Ctesiphon, the moment is ruined by the surprise arrival of the Black Death mercenary company.

Taking the capital city and every surrounding resort hostage as part of a payment dispute, the mercenaries expected to meet no physical resistance.
Ethelyn would be perfectly content to simply get her money back and leave the resort to sort things out with the mercenaries themselves, but as it turns out the force is led by a shadow from Ethelyn's own past that she can't simply let get away.

The Black Death mercenaries have brought so many troops, clones, drones, and mechs that they expect absolutely no resistance from the resort patrons. You will prove that complacency unfounded.
Take advantage of the mercenaries' inattention with Ethelyn's trusty Data-Spike, perforate them with the versatile Submachinegun, blast them around corners with the Gyrobuster's homing minirockets, or bring out the Jetgun to cut through heavy armor as if it were mere paper.
Ethelyn is highly nimble and can run circles around most enemies who will have to resort to overwhelming force to try and stop you. The game features seven mainline levels built in a non-linear layout allowing you to flank enemies and search for secrets.

Made in bits and pieces over the course of nearly a decade by a single developer on Linux using C/C++, OpenGL, and open-source Quake mapping tools, Ctesiphon's custom engine allows for the game to run reliably on low-spec systems. It's built to withstand large firefights with dozens of enemies, hundreds of blood spatter and bullet impact decals, and piles of giblets and scrap as you blow the enemies apart into clouds of particles and debris.
Ctesiphon has been developed on Linux first and supports virtually all controllers connected to it. On Windows only XInput-compatible controllers are supported natively, but others will work fine with SteamInput enabled. The big exception is for the Steam Deck and Steam Controllers, these won't be natively supported on Linux/SteamOS until after release but in the meantime they should work fine if you play the Windows build by setting compatibility to any version of Proton.

Pretty neat game! It being native Linux is a big plus, since I've just switched to it full time. The graphics and music are well-done, the guns feel great, and Ethelyn is a fun protag. It's short but sweet and well worth the US$10.
A lost gem forgotten to ancient past...
*Disclaimer: game key was provided to me by the dev **I was allowed the full freedom to say anything in my review. Thank you!!** Fans of Half-life, Quake, Doom and many other Old school retro shooters of the golden era will be at home here. +The movement is fast and frantic, gunplay is snappy and responsive, mechanics and drops are well made/placed, and most importantly, the enemies and levels are well stitched together for satisfying completion. +runs and plays like butter (2 hours in) So far I'm having an absolute blast and each level doesn't feel too long or over stay its welcome. I think based on the quality and game that is present here the price is more than justifiable, especially when putting into account you're supporting a new upcoming passionate indie dev. On sale it would just be a steal. Send love and help them breathe new life into this genre! Seriously, do yourself a damn favor and play this one. A game with great dialogue, story and setting alone is enough to get me hooked. However the games overall feel brought me right back to the intense joy I felt playing all those classic 90's shooters such as Half-life and Doom.
Fun little shooter game, feels very good to play and doesn't overstay its welcome.

Great little shooter. Fun combat and guns. Good levels with lots of secrets. And the music is thematic and overall really awesome
This is a very special game and I'll be very disappointed if we don't see Ethelyn again. Don't know why steam is saying i refunded. Super did not do that, this game is amazing. Also, I really hope an OST is released.
I liked...

The gameplay - fast-paced arcade action while hunting for blue and yellow access cards like it's the 1990s again
The guns - there are some fun ones like auto-guided small missles or a water jet gun (this game's BFG)
The aesthetic - the game has a nice visual style that works well
The humor - it's a cheesy parody, I enjoyed the enemy dialogues and bizzare adverts
The custom engine - it ran flawlessly for me and I admire such level of dedication to the craft

I didn't care for...

The robots - towards the end, the game leans too hard on these spongey, hard-hitting enemies; more variety would be better (for example, some kind of elite soldier or a helicopter attacking from outside through the windows of the last level)
The length and lack of more developed story - I wished the game was longer and we got more story; I enjoyed the cast, but the game doesn't do much with them

Verdict
Ctesiphon is a retro shooter that takes after its 90's inspiration in both good and bad ways - it's easy to pick up, fun to play, it has a sense of humor (I loved how enemy soldiers squeak when they detect you, it sounds like they're happy to see you :D), but it's also barebones in terms of story. I wished it was longer; not because of value, but because I enjoyed the cast and gameplay and wanted to see it developed further. As a one-man project, from the art down to the game engine level, it looks and runs great; I'll be keeping an eye on future projects from this guy. 8/10, would get stabbed by a cactus again. Really fun and challenging - it deserves a much longer campaign.
Ctesiphon is a fairly short and underrated hidden gem of a boomer shooter. The weapons pack a nice punch, combat is fast and fluent, the levels are interesting and the soundtrack is really amazing. It does remind me a bit of Ion Fury and Selaco, but it is definitely not on the same level as those two games in any aspect, but it was still quite fun to play through, although it only took me around 2 hours. I do have a few points to criticize: Firstly, there are very few decorative items scattered throughout the levels (except for some cacti), which gives the levels a kind of sterile and empty feel -- decoration is one of the reasons that made the levels of Duke Nukem 3D so much more interesting that those of Doom and modern examples like the aforementioned Ion Fury and Selaco are really good examples of great level decoration. Secondly, the game only offers a handful of enemy types, which get boring pretty quickly. And thirdly, both the final boss fight as well as the ending are pretty anti-climactic -- it's just one of those circle-around-a-bis-ass-boss-and-keep-firing-until-it-falls-over fights with no real challenge and the ending is just two lines of pointless dialog -- an ending with a little more bang would have been nice. In any case, if you like boomer shooters and the screenshots are visually appealing enough for you, then you should give it a try. Finally: I played the game on Linux Mint and it ran flawlessly without any bugs or crashes.
