Elysia wanders the ruins after the disappearance of three million people, while Lily wakes below with no memories and is drawn toward a tower under a violet sky. The VN focuses on atmospheric storytelling rather than systems or branching romance routes. Its theatrical narration, recurring motifs, and character-driven episodes create a mood of jazz, rain, and lingering memories.

[th]🎮Gameplay:[/th]

🕓 Linear VN Progression: You read alternating Lily/Elysia chapters and follow two interconnected timelines. 💔 Choice-Based Fail States: Some decisions lead to instant bad endings. The main route remains fixed. 🔥 Poem–Newspaper Mechanic: Spoken poem lines differ from their written form, and later you must identify contradictions in in-game newspaper articles. 🗺️ Episode Structure: Each district functions as a focused chapter with its own cast and short arc that supports the main story. 👗 Expressive Visuals: Layered sprites, full illustrations, and storybook-like layouts give scenes a dramatic, staged feel.

[th]📖Story and Depth:[/th]

The story focuses on how people deal with loss after the “Great Disappearance.” Each underground inhabitant—musicians, wanderers, catfolk, broken families—shows a different way of holding onto or letting go of their memories. Lily starts without memories and grows through the people she meets, while Elysia confronts the past she tried to avoid. When their paths connect, the result is a bittersweet message about forgotten lives and what remains of them. The prose is lyrical and repetitive on purpose, creating a poetic, atmospheric tone that works well if you enjoy slow, theatrical storytelling.

[th]🏆Verdict:[/th]

For me, Sona-Nyl of the Violet Shadows Refrain stands out as a slow but deeply atmospheric visual novel. I loved its melancholic steampunk world, its violet-soaked mood, and the way it follows two heroines in two broken versions of New York. The storytelling feels theatrical, almost like reading a stage play, and that tone pulled me in more than most VNs do. What impressed me most were the characters. Every person Lily or Elysia meets: musicians, wanderers, catfolk, damaged families, left a mark on me. Lily’s gradual understanding of hope and pain, and Elysia’s confrontation with her past, made their eventual connection feel meaningful. The emotional payoff works because the VN takes its time to build these moments. There isn’t much gameplay, but the poem–newspaper mechanic, the strong voice acting, and the expressive visual direction kept me engaged. With its introspective tone and added Refrain scenes, I found the experience memorable and satisfying. If you enjoy slow, poetic, character-driven stories set in a unique steampunk world, this VN is absolutely worth reading. 8.5\10. Sona-Nyl is my 3rd attempt in "What a Beautiful" series. Previous two were Sekien no Inganock and Hikari no Valusia, and in both of them I was attracted by visuals(and Liar-soft visuals are probably my favorite in vn industry) but just couldn't stand the style of the text, and here I actually had the same expirience. 1-3 chapters were hard to read, with repetitious hyperemotional text, romance theme which I usually don't like much and setting that deceived my expectations, because I was looking for steampunk. But starting from the 4th chapter things changed, and I found myself hooked in the story: the text, while remaining the same, started to get exciting, the setting started to get appealing and even the romance was enjoyable to read. This is an "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" style vn, and overall I can describe it as "Beatiful". Beatiful text, beatiful visuals, beatiful music. Beatiful sad story. Now I'm looking forward to read the other entries of the series, including previously dropped Inganock and Valusia.
Such a beautiful and mesmerizing VN in all aspects, it truly felt like reading a fairytale with sci-fi elements! The world-building is quite interesting, with the execution taking advantage of fusing steampunk and fantasy aesthetics to create a unique setting and very dreamlike ambience. Moreover, the presentation is immaculate - the art and music are breathtakingly stunning, and even the writing feels ornate with its fairytale/poem-like prose. Additionally the character cast is striking, diverse and with intriguing storylines. While the narrative structure might get redundant after a while, it didn't feel overwhelming to me as I tend to enjoy this writing style. The story itself, in my opinion, is one which relies more on the sentimental factor rather than actual plot for the impact. Though I did enjoy the plot, its episodal repetitive progression becomes palpable quite early on, which caused the story feel kind of predictable and not suspenseful for the most part. However the mystery is still present and I was really invested in the reveal, although the sci-fi and steampunk aspects ended up being more in the background than I'd wished. As mentioned, this story lays high value on emotions, and indeed does a great job at conveying feelings of passion, sadness, despair, yearning, and others in a deep, somehow explicit manner. Altogether it's a very cute, immersive and ethereal VN that's very artistic and poignant in nature!
——《白船》(The White Ship),《梦寻秘境卡达斯》(The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath)
A very rich game. Uniquely metaphor/poetry driven compared to other visual novels I've seen and it isn't exactly being discrete with it. The visuals are amazing with Liar-Soft's willingness to have unique and colorful unreal backgrounds and shading being utilized better than ever, capped off with some 10/10 character design. Solid music and overall production quality, MangaGamer's release really goes above and beyond too adding all the content. The story is very episodic, some episodes better than others, but the central character Lily is charming to follow and great to see her arc play out. A bit like Kino's Journey meets Alice in Wonderland.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3463841164
A bit of a slow burn but one I found to be quite unique and worth reading. The art and OST in particular are fantastic. Shame this VN appears to have been criminally overlooked.
Sona-Nyl provides a beautiful, immersive experience in its wonderfully crafted world, populated by characters riddled with undesired secrets in a setting blanketed with a bleak mystique of elements juxtaposing fantasy and reality, all through the lens of its two female protagonists. One young woman and one young girl, lost souls treading through a post-apocalyptic city where they both attempt to reach the end of their goals, learning more of what could have caused the place they were exploring to have become the way it is and mingling with the citizens and the things they have left behind after the tragedy. The latter has no memories of who she really is, while the former suppressed her memories of who she was before, and it is by undertaking this journey through the city, so long as the woman and the girl keep their heads up in spite of everything, only then can the both of them discover their own identity and regain their lost humanity. The story may be slow-paced majority of the time, and the prose a bit too repetitive, but it is all significantly deliberate and meaningful in telling its tale. Every new location has something the protagonists will learn from, and every new character residing in those areas will always have an emotional impact on them, challenging their convictions and teaching them emotions lost and forgotten, for no chapter fails to fulfill its purpose of developing its characters in this story. There are fight scenes, but don't expect them to be action-packed because quite honestly, they all boil down to the enemy being regarded as super strong until they got defeated through one strike to the face. Yes, the fight scenes follow this simple structure. However, don't let that discourage you, for the focus of this visual novel is not to let you read cool fight scenes, but rather to make you feel the emotions and feelings emanating from all the characters. What do they feel about their situation? What makes them calm or uneasy? What will they do when faced with something unimaginable? These questions perpetually influence the progression of both the plot and the characters, and the conclusion they have arrived will manifest in their confrontation against the villains of the setting and the words they've expressed which steeled their resolve in defeating them. It is never much about HOW they will prevail, but rather WHY they will prevail. Why must she go through such a perilous and unrewarding journey with no clear destination? Why does she continue talking to the NPCs when she can just pass by them and focus on reaching that end? Why does it matter to us readers to know what they feel about the experiences they're having and the memories they've accumulated along the way? Why? Well, there's only one way to answer that question. Buy this visual novel, and read it from the beginning up to the end.
