Good game but endgame grind sucks

神ゲー ストーリー音楽イラストデザインどれも良い そこが売りだろうからアクション部分は主題じゃないし、それでもアクションはクライスタからかなり進化していたので、あまり気になりませんでした。

This game has great story. I personally enjoy the gameplay. 8/10. Loses two points due to some frustrations with the dodge mechanics and the block mechanics: the dodge mechanics seem to sometimes not work and I only found real use for the block mechanics in the second to final boss and final boss.
Before I begin, I just want to say that this review isn't for anyone looking to see if they should get the game. Of course I think you should. While it's on sale, anyway. I loved this game, it's one of my favourite games now, but FURYU selling this game for over £55 (with an ultimate edition being £80) is robbery and is actively harming their potential sales. Regardless, this review was made for those, like me, who have completed the game and wish to share their thoughts. I will be discussing spoilers. I recommend you watch videos to gage if this is the game for you because as another reviewer says: "It isn't for everyone." ----- Back in 2023, I came across a great video on YT of four wiggling chibis dancing to "Xfinity". That video would sit in the back of my brain until this year when I finally saw Crymachina on sale. From the moment I started playing Crymachina, I absolutely adored it. The setting, gameplay, and art style had me hooked from the very beginning. I even liked the weirdly paced story, even though it kind of pulled a Far Cry 3 half way through. However, as I was playing, I was noticing some oddities. Notably janky animations, a lack in enemy variations, and a plot that felt almost like it should have been double the length and double the scope. At some point in the game, it seemed like we were walking across a bridge as FURYU were still building it. This is what I have identified as my main gripe with this game. Crymachina has all the signs of development crunch. We'll never know if it wasn't given enough development time and funding or if it was simply far too ambitious in scope for the timescale and funding it was provided. Regardless of what happened, it's clear there was real ambition and talent behind the game. The art direction is gorgeous and the OST doesn't miss. But there's clearly so much wasted potential it's genuinely frustrating. Issue #1: Enoa and the "True Ending" First, let's discuss the issue with the "True End" of the game.
Walking Enoa into the light of the door
is all well and good, but what about the journey to get there? From the moment you beat the final boss and you're spat back out at the menu, nothing really changes. If you load back in without moving Enoa, Enoa is still there chatting away and giving you warnings. What about the group's turmoil after the fact? Is there no Tea Time of them talking about it and sharing their feelings? What about the throwaway line about
the girls going around with Zoe and collecting fragments of data to repair Enoa?
That would have been so cool to go back and
reclaim Enoa's memory fragments
based on old fights. Maybe Ami and Mikoto return to where Enoa first pushed herself too hard? Maybe they go back to Enoa's realm and look there? But no. What we got was "Oh we did this off screen" when it could have easily been a gameplay feature. They're already making us fight bosses 3 times in a row to collect their personality data, why not add extra incentive for us to go back and do that? Talking about Personality Data... Issue #2: Personality Data and Lore I admit having a love-hate relationship with Personality Data. It was actually kind of neat to drip-feed myself the lore like this, and it mostly answers every question you might have (albeit sometimes vaguely) and the pop culture reference names like Clarice and Lecter, Zaphod and Marvin, were cute little touches. But they are incredibly repetitive to do, and outside of lore you don't actually get anything from collecting them all other than ExP and EGO. No achievement, no collectable, nothing. You do get extra Tea Time events from completing certain ones but that's extra post-game lore. Don't get me wrong I liked having this lore all available to me, but having to kill each boss 3 times, or wasting 20 EGO on doing the Personality Data gacha, isn't fun nor rewarding. And also... what do we do with it? Do we collect them? What then? Also also, I didn't forget that Litheia claimed that the universe was a "Dark Forest". Isn't that bad...? Why does NO ONE mention this again? Unless I missed something in the lore, no one mentions aliens killing other civilisations ever again. Issue #3: Cut content and missed opportunities It's so blatantly clear the team had all these ideas and concepts that, for one reason or another, they just didn't have the time to bring forward. There's so many gaps (like the sudden ends of the story beats) towards the end that I could tell certain aspects were underdeveloped at best and actively cut straight out of the game at worst. We never know what happens to the frame Zoe built for Enoa. It's potentially implied we may get to use her as a playable character but that never happens. In fact, we never even see it in game. What about rebuilding humanity? We were collecting personality data, surely we could bring more people into the Imitation Garden? There were a few hints during the story that Personality Data could have been a bigger part of the gameplay other than just lore dumps in three sections. And what about potential human forms of Trinity in the Imitation Garden? Honestly Trinity may be one of the biggest issues of cut content in this thread. I loved whenever they came up in the story, but I feel they were underutilised and instead used as just backup and never expanded upon beyond - you guessed it - their Personality Data. Why not have the lot of them discuss growing up in the same era? The similarities or the issues they faced? What their day-to-day is like? Ultimately I loved Crymachina. But I feel so utterly frustrated with what we potentially missed out on. This is speculation on my end, but I believe the incredible roster of talent they got in to voice some of the characters actually hindered them. Ami was voiced by Minami Takahashi who notably voices Lucoa from Dragon Maid, Litheia was voiced by Shigeru Chiba who voices Buggy the Clown from One Piece, to name a few. Imagine the cost and headache of timetabling and scheduling to get them back for more content. While it made for a far more immersive experience, it also smothered any hope we had of getting any extra content. I want to say we were lucky to get the DLC we got but it's mostly a rehash of old content. The outfits were probably what took the most time in them. Crymachina's settings allow for so many different spin-offs, too. I'd play a game exclusively about the Trinity, or a sequel about rebuilding EDEN. But, like all of FURYU's games, that will never happen. Quite a few of FURYU's games are very similar, too. Wonderful ideas and concepts that just balloon out of control and scope, limiting the game's potential. I wish we got more. Not just from the perspective of someone who fell in love with the setting and its characters, but from the perspective of someone who could see just how much we missed out on due to a runaway scope. But, as I said before, FURYU aren't known for sequels. While unfortunate, the DLC is likely all we will ever see of Crymachina ever again. A 2/3rds finished game with incredible untapped promise and FURYU branded grinding. And thus the Crymachina book closes... with wedding dresses and Samoyed outfits. Oh speaking about books, buy the artbook. It's amazing.
