«CRUSH»
CRUSH
CRUSH is a bite-sized action-arcade romp that carries on the spirit of SMASH T.V.'s futuristic televised death-sports game-show aesthetic, a real staple of 90's gaming culture. With the same over-the-top retro-future style, the same aggressive and fast-paced top-down run'n'gun action, and even the same fun and memorable gameshow plot, CRUSH is a new contender with a heavier and grittier, punkier style of its own.
Gameplay
CRUSH absolutely has that unhinged and gritty punk-rock feeling that fans of Ubermosh are going to feel automatically familiar with. It trades that single-room arena focus on counter-attack reflexes for a more explorative level-based progression of free-flowing mayhem and carnage by way of explosive arsenal and impressive weapon selections. Murdering your way through the masses of contenders, your choices of instruments of death range from rapid-fire lazers of doom to wide-spray streams of fire but they don't last long so kill efficiently and kill quick. The rooms you travel across have the same box-arena design to them and not much changes in the way of obstacles, but the hordes of oncoming baddies that surround you in every direction are what make each encounter unique. From nimble little ninja bots with swirling blades to gigantic juggernaut mechs with massive spinning Gatling guns, the type of enemies you come across and the insane weaponry they drop become progressively more populated, challenging, and chaotic. It ramps up in the challenge pretty quick too, but even so the game is very lenient with the extra lives. Going on a run through the sensationalism of the prime-time death-sport-gameshow starts you with 11 lives total, and you'll still probably eat those up pretty quick on your first few tries. The game is still very much in Early Access so who's to say how much of that is subject to change, but I'm already excited to see how certain features like the currently useless currency will play out, and how the shop will add replayability be it in the form of permanent upgrades, new weapons or perks.
Final Thought
At only $5 this is a satisfactory value for genuinely arcade-y top-down shooting action, and fans of SMASH T.V. or even classic Gauntlet are going to dig the map based progression through grid-like layouts of increasingly crazy arenas. The whole futuristic game show twist on the game's presentation is just extra icing on the cake, and a style I personally really dig and miss from the 90's. Some things I'd LOVE to see in the future since this is after all still in Early Access (which also means a lot of these are already most likely being worked on); -Room/Arena variation! It'd be great to see some sprucing up of the actual rooms since they're a little big and empty right now, even something as simple as spinning traps or other obstacles could make weaving in-between the gunfire of enemies even more fun than it already is. -Map layouts! The progressive exploration of rooms Binding of Isaac-style is fun and replayable, but what's there is sorta bare-bones with not much variation between directions you go in or consequences (This is already being addressed by developers in frequent updates, which seem to be adding dead-ends, bridges, etc.). -Scoring mechanics! This game has huge potential for score-chasing and leaderboards, both of which are absent from the game right now. Tight scoring mechanics mixed with some form of world and friend leaderboards would add a good amount of competitive replayability. Other than that the meat of the game is there, and it's damn good. The standout pixel-art caught my discerning eye for retro visuals right away and the gritty, oppressive look of the future death-sport arena matched the brutal and hardcore twinstick action quite well. This is a delightful twinstick romp, and its even better in co-op so be sure to bring a friend! 07/23/18 As of right now I don't know if it's developers' intention but this game was to underdeveloped for me, a basic twin stick shooter that you can finish in 30 minutes or so. I might come back to it when it's complete but as of right now it is not even worth the $5 I put into it.
+1 Dev is very honest. Edit: Dev fixed the Store Page, all is good - leaving this up to show how s/he handled the situation, in a good way: here's hoping that when it hits 1.0 it's good! ~ Old review, prior to Store page fix: This is a *very* rough build / EA alpha stage project, with the dev obviously tinkering around (removing ~80% of items last patch to sort basic core elements out) and is NOT a 1.0 gold release. Nowhere close. It's also a pity, because Dev didn't realize that their store front wasn't stating EA: SO: DO NOT BUY IF YOU EXPECT A FULL GAME / NOT INTERESTED IN SUPPORTING EA INDY GAMES. 100% DO NOT BUY / COMPLAIN IF THAT'S YOUR EXPECTATION. However, Dev was: a) Monitoring forums and noticed this within ~1 hr (always a good sign) b) Immediately told me to refund as s/he recognized the error c) Couldn't sort it with Steam, but immediately pushed an update text stating the error. d) Stated s/he's a solo dev working on it for 1 1/2 yrs (and obviously learning their craft while doing so) So - atm, it's a very very bare bones Smash TV clone with a some issues, not much content (you'll finish the 1st arena in ~30mins or so) **but** with a lot of promise. Advice to Dev: nail the SP content / structure before even attempting the MP code: MP code is a heinous task, you need to sort the base core mechanics out first. $5 to support an obviously honest & first time dev? Sure, we'll do that. Just don't buy if you're not into that kind of thing.
The absolute bare bones of an experience are here. The shooting is alright. There are "power-up" weapons with limited ammo you pick up. They are okay, maybe even kinda cool. The movement feels slow, but that's mostly an issue when you are running around cleared rooms etc. During combat it works. As you clear rooms, more enemies start appearing. A bit too many actually. You can get into a situation where there is a horde after you and unless you get lucky with a weapon drop, you're going to take a hit (because you can't kill them fast enough and there is no way to kite them). That's it. The only additional mechanic is picking money to buy a chest for an item. I don't know the extent, but in my last run I got two chests. One had a map...the other just had blue tokens (that I believe are used to power items, that I didn't have). After you beat the boss, you get whisked to...a coming soon screen. There isn't enough here, what is here is kinda boring, and there are bugs. Many of them are just visual, but they are distracting. Come on dev, I believe in you.
I like the direction this is going. It seems like a revamp of the cult-classic "Smash TV". At the momemt though becasue it's early access there are a lot of bugs and video/aspect ratio issues as well as some stages/rooms spawning items and pick-ups in non-accessable areas. With some polish though i can see this game being a smash hit.
Great concept in the like of SmashTV with really nice artwork. The only issue is I "beat" the game in 15 minutes and doesn't have much replay value as there's not a lot of variety. However the game is still in Early Access so I hope to see improvements! Conclusion: Good game -- but not worth $5 until they add more content.
Abandoned & unfinished Game. Skip this one!
First off, I wanna say THANK YOU to Salt & Pixel for hooking me up with the game for free. This version of CRUSH far exceeded what I expected it to be. Coming from playing the older versions, it's clear that you guys rebuilt it from the ground up and made it into something a lot more enjoyable. From the combat to the art style, just about everything dealing with this game makes me more hype about playing it in the future. You guys should add an online mode in the future. Just saying. Again, thanks for the game, and I can't wait for the future of CRUSH. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7a4Jjl3lagM
