one of the best games ive ever played and by far the most underrated. the puzzles are so creative and they always keep things fresh with new mechanics to master not just for combat but also for the puzzles. its not going to be everyones thing but so much charm is in this game i would recommend everyone to at least try it out. i'd give it about a 6 out of 7......
Hi! Lea! Bye!
A true gem with old school sensibilities mixed with new tech and a new take on isometric platforming in general. It's a game that embodies the spirit of those early action adventures and forges its own frontier with it. Surprisingly with some highly effective storytelling too. Lea and the cast emote in a wonderful way and special credit goes to the pixel artists responsible. The soundtrack was really solid too, nothing that really blew my mind, but it held up for the entire run which is an achievement in and of itself. Now with my shower of praise out of the way I have to bring up a few concerns I have for people approaching this. 1. The old school sensibilities mean the game doesn't hold your hand and it's up to you to work out the puzzles which can not only be brain teasers but also rely on tight execution in a number of places. If this is not your thing, it is a recurrent theme throughout and you will have a nasty time with it. 2. The isometric platforming is done tremendously well here, and should be applauded for its attempt. However, it is STILL isometric platforming and a few areas for me at least confused the hell out of me and I jumped into space more times than I'd like to admit. Still it is not without its merit and I say this only for those who are easily frustrated or bad at this in general. 3. The combat expects you to be on your toes, with your brain switched on from the moment you reach the end of the first area and from then on throughout. If you don't like frenetic timing based combat it will hand you your ass. All that is to say, if you want a challenge and a fantastic world to explore, this game is right up there with the best of them, and I can understand how some see it as a metroidvania, despite it not being a 2d platformer with movement unlocks. There's tons here to explore and my only minor grumble is that there's no real minigames or anything to indulge your time in. But what's here has depth, a lot of freedom for expression in the combat and plenty of avenues to explore. Fully recommend it.
Most underrated game ever.
wanna play an MMO but suffer crippling social anxiety, here's the solution! its a single player rpg that pretends to be an MMO and it is incredibly fun
Overall interesting game and unique enough that I’d recommend playing it. CrossCode is an adventure game alternating between three distinct types of gameplay : combat, puzzles and thorough exploration. The first two are essential to the game and cannot be avoided while the third one is optional. I'll go through these three types of gameplay in order to understand what kind of game CrossCode is. Combat The combat is more interesting and engaging than what I expected from the first few hours in this game. The character can shoot, hit in close combat and dash. These three alone made me think at first that the combat would mostly consist of hit and run. This description is in fact very incomplete once you progress in the adventure and unlock new abilities and “stances” (I’m keeping it vague to not spoil too much). Once you have multiple options, there are various ways to approach combat, it’s quite interesting and fun and doesn’t fall into complexity territory. The character also has a shield that you can use to absorb some damage (but you can’t do that for too long). Trying to avoid all source damage by running and dashing is not always the best option (sometimes it’s barely possible) and using the shield is an interesting mechanic. Overall the combat is quite fun and is nothing too hard. Puzzles CrossCode contains a lot of non-trivial puzzles (but not too hard either) that you have to complete in order to progress in the adventure. If you don’t like having too many puzzles in a video game, I’d therefore recommend avoiding this game. The puzzles are usually found in the dungeons where you have to go through multiple rooms with a puzzle to solve in each one of these rooms. Fortunately, it didn't get too boring for me (though I wouldn’t say it was super exciting either) and some of the puzzles were interesting enough. “Exploration” This one is optional. The CrossCode map contains a lot of chests in plain sight that can only be accessed if you meticulously search for certain passages. These passages are not hidden per se but they are cleverly put at certain places so that it’s easy to miss them. The chest contains equipment, loot or food that you can use in combat for temporary bonuses. All of these are optional to find since there are shops where you can buy similar products anyway. However you can buy to a certain extent since buying requires both money and a set list of specified “materials” in a certain quantity and these “materials” can be conveniently found in chests! So yeah, you are somewhat encouraged to thoroughly explore the map to get these chests (remember it’s also completely optional to finish the game). It’s not the most exciting gameplay I must say, but can be pleasant in small doses. I didn’t try to get all the chests, only some of them. Everything else Crosscode is a cool adventure with a lot of content (this not a hyperbole, there is truly a lot of content). The pixel art is close to excellent, it’s vibrant, the characters' portraits are full of variations for various moods, some of them are very funny. The world doesn’t feel empty, it has a lot of characters you can interact with. Speaking of interactions, the dialogues are usually not very serious, they are lighthearted and funny, I liked it that way. CrossCode is overall a good game. For the negatives and why CrossCode isn’t necessarily the most memorable game : some parts of the game felt slow to play (trying to explore the map for chests or having to solve multiple consecutive puzzles in a row). You really have to be patient to play this game.
just finished the game and i had fun till the end! i love everything about this game but the only one i struggle alot as the game progress, is the puzzles. tbh, im not a puzzle person myself but i do enjoy some here and there. . . that is until i reach like further in the game that i lost my thinking cap out of nowhere but i use guides to atleast help me out in the game. the final puzzle took me 28+ minutes(ive been through trial and error). but overall, i enjoy everything about this game! i even bought the dlc just to see the characters(especially lea and emilie) and continue the combat/gameplay.
My feelings towards this game are mixed, I love the story and the characters as well as the combat, and the puzzles, in general, but often I find that it pushes those way too far and the experience can quicky go from fun to painful as you have to grind or search for solutions to puzzle online. I would have enjoyed the game so much more if the story developed earlier and more frequently, I feel like things only started to move forward 20 hours in and after a phenomenal middle chapter, you then have to do another 20 hours of stupid side quests and exploring as the game just drops the plot again until you get near the end. Honestly, only my eagerness to learn more about Lea kept me going, as I considered giving up many times from how painful the gaming experience was at times, and even while using the accessibility options in the menu. And I'm capable of finishing Doom Eternal in Nightmare mode and I love every minute of it, but this game require so much pixel precision and fine control that high-level combat is honestly not that fun. I honestly do not understand why elemental overload is something that exists in this game! All it does is put a damper on the combat and further drag out the boss fights which require constant use of elemental attacks. I really feel like the game would be so much better without this mechanic! To conclude, if you like colorful and endearing world and characters, give it a chance, but if you are not a masochist who loves to be punished for no reason make sure to lower the difficulty in the menu, and still be prepared to have your patience and resolve tested.
