This game gives you almost no hand-holding, throws you into a jungle, and expects you to figure things out. Sometimes through trial and error, and sometimes by scrolling through the wiki looking for an article that might help understand how some of the items work. It can be repetitive, sure, but that's what makes every little breakthrough feel rewarding. A solid 8/10 for me. Evolved from "confused ape" to "slightly less confused ape".
One thing is not explaining anything to simulate the confusion of an ape seeing things for the first time. That in my opinion is an interesting idea. But man, the controls are absolutely terrible. I get that it takes trial and error to uncover a possibility with objects and stuff, but once I do I expect it to be fluid.
I'm an archaeology nerd and have a deep love for the human story of evolution. this game is really well researched and is very true to the knowledge we currently have for this era of our history. while it may take a little bit to understand the mechanics of some actions with timing and some of the gameplay in general, once you have the hang of it, it's a breeze. i personally had to look at the wiki quite a few times/ have it open on my other monitor as i am very forgetful and also needed a better explanation as to how some things worked but i love this game. its beautiful, its realistic and really well made, you can tell the developers really dove deep into research for this and i personally really appreciate that.
Good game. The creators pretty much let u defend for yourself. the tutorial is only a little helpful. This game wants u to use your brain. if u are very slow or u don't like to use your brain, I wouldn't recommend this game for you.
In principle, I should love this game. It has all the elements I love in a game, and on top of that it has monkeys, which alone would have made me buy the game. The gameplay is purposely unclear. Very little is explained in the game instead letting you slowly figure out how things work and what can be done with various objects, locations, characters etc. This is a clear choice from the developers, and in principle I agree with it. The problem with this game comes from the fact that controls and graphics are both horrendous. It is extremely hard to control the character, so instead of making exploration, the core goal of the game, an enjoyable experience, it is more frustrating than anything. You will constantly grab objects you don't want to, fail to grab objects you do want to, the camera randomly jitters around even when you simply walk straight. Collisions are apparently something the programmers have never heard of, and you'll see objects and characters in random orientations colluding with objects everywhere, and you constantly get blocked without understanding why. For instance, when predators jump at you, you can evade them, but most of the time they will jump directly on you and collude with you. Then they will jump at you again, and again, and you do that 5-10 times in a row. The camera abruptly changes every time so you can't even control where you are jumping. It is frankly tiresome. All of this is made worse by the graphics, which are pretty poor, and are purposely degraded when you are hurt, scared, poisoned etc., which is pretty much all the time. There are things flashing up on the screen constantly, and none of them are explained, so in practice it just ends up being distracting. Honestly, it's just not ok to ship a game with controls so poorly designed. This would be bad in any situation, but this is especially problematic since exploration is the whole point of the game. The most important job of the developers was to make this experience enjoyable, and they dramatically failed at that. Like, who thought it was a good idea to have rain make the camera shake? The result is that you never know if you fail to do something because this is not something you are allowed to do, or because the game is buggy, or something else. The interesting aspects of the game are completely nulled out by the crappiness of the programming. This is sad, because I would very much like to love this game, but I don't.
I like this game but god is it slow; without videos I felt like this game would be impossible. However, it did fill that empty void left by Spore somewhat. If you enjoy the slow progression it's not bad; but the concept itself isn't fully utilized in my opinion. A 5.5-6/10
"ancestors, i call to thee for guidance." *confused Australopithecus hooting and hollering*
One of a kind game. Takes a lot of patience and effort at times, but I finished it for 100% achievements and enjoyed every single moment. I can see why this game is not for everyone, but if it clicks... what a ride. Sad there are no DLCs :(
