Cosmic Cavern was published in July 1980 by Takaya Arita, currently a professor at Nagoya University. This “Tactical Digging Game,” which existed two years prior to Dig Dug as the original sandbox game, has now been dramatically powered up!

Too bare-bones for the price, not as "arcade" as the trailer would imply, this game would improve a lot if it had a bit more variety, or a level editor, like Lode Runner, or "solve the situation" puzzle stages. As is, I can't recommend.
Why did I buy this x(
amazing online only playability from 1980!
juego muy malo. no gasten dinero en esto
Cosmic Cavern 3671 宇宙最大の地底最大の作戦, developed and published by Mindware, is a retro-styled arcade action game that revives one of the earliest digging-based game concepts from the dawn of computer gaming. Originally inspired by a game designed in 1980 by Takaya Arita, long before similar mechanics became widely popular in arcade titles, this modern release serves both as a restoration of a historical design and as a reimagining with updated features. The game preserves the simplicity and immediacy of classic arcade experiences while adding visual polish and modern accessibility. As a result, it functions both as a playable piece of gaming history and as a contemporary retro arcade challenge for modern players. The premise of Cosmic Cavern 3671 is intentionally minimal, reflecting the design philosophy of early arcade games where gameplay mechanics and score-based challenges were far more important than narrative storytelling. Players control a lone explorer navigating a vast underground cavern system inhabited by strange alien creatures. The environment consists largely of destructible terrain, allowing the player to dig tunnels through layers of soil while navigating the labyrinth-like environment. As enemies begin to populate the caverns, the player must survive by carefully shaping the terrain, setting traps, and maneuvering through the underground network while avoiding being surrounded by hostile creatures. The core mechanic revolves around excavation and spatial strategy. As the player moves through the cavern, the character automatically digs through blocks of earth, creating new passageways that permanently alter the layout of the stage. This constant reshaping of the environment forms the foundation of the gameplay. Every tunnel dug changes how enemies can move through the cavern, forcing players to think strategically about where to carve paths and where to leave barriers intact. In many situations, the most effective tactic involves guiding enemies into narrow corridors where they can be trapped or eliminated more easily. To help manage the growing number of enemies, players have access to mines that can be planted on either side of the character. These explosive traps detonate when enemies approach, making them useful for clearing groups of creatures or defending choke points. Placing mines in the right locations becomes a key part of survival, especially as enemy numbers increase and their movement patterns become more aggressive. Because the underground map constantly evolves with each tunnel dug, players must adapt their strategy on the fly while anticipating how enemies might navigate the newly created pathways. What makes Cosmic Cavern 3671 particularly interesting is how the terrain manipulation system transforms the battlefield into a dynamic maze. Unlike many arcade games with static levels, here the environment is continuously reshaped by the player’s actions. Every movement influences how enemies approach and how safe routes can be maintained. Digging recklessly may open pathways that allow enemies to surround the player, while careful digging can create controlled corridors that funnel enemies into predictable patterns. This combination of fast reflex gameplay and strategic environmental planning gives the game a depth that belies its simple premise. The modern version of Cosmic Cavern 3671 includes several variations of the original concept, allowing players to experience different interpretations of the gameplay. In addition to the retro-styled mode that closely resembles the original design, the game includes updated versions that refine the mechanics and add visual enhancements. Some modes also introduce cooperative play, allowing two players to work together in the same cavern. This cooperative mode adds an additional layer of strategy, as players must coordinate their digging routes and trap placements while avoiding interfering with each other’s escape paths. Visually, the game embraces a colorful pixel-art aesthetic that celebrates the look and feel of early arcade games. The cavern environment is composed of bright, blocky terrain that contrasts sharply with the quirky alien enemies roaming through the tunnels. These creatures range from small crawling monsters to more unusual designs that add personality to the otherwise simple environment. The art direction deliberately captures the charm of retro arcade graphics while applying a level of polish that helps the visuals feel clean and readable on modern displays. The soundtrack follows a similarly nostalgic direction. Retro-inspired music and sound effects accompany the action, reinforcing the game’s arcade roots. The music loops are energetic and simple, providing a rhythmic backdrop that keeps the gameplay moving at a steady pace. While the audio design does not attempt to deliver cinematic orchestration, it effectively complements the fast-paced gameplay and helps recreate the atmosphere of classic arcade machines. Cosmic Cavern 3671 follows the traditional arcade format of score-based progression rather than narrative advancement. The main objective is to survive as long as possible while accumulating points by defeating enemies and navigating the cavern efficiently. As the game progresses, enemies appear more frequently and move faster, gradually increasing the difficulty. This escalating challenge encourages players to refine their strategies and improve their reaction time in order to achieve higher scores and longer survival runs. The high-score system and leaderboard elements reinforce the arcade spirit of competition. Players are encouraged to replay sessions repeatedly in order to perfect their techniques, discover more efficient digging strategies, and push their scores higher. This design ensures that the game remains replayable even though the basic mechanics remain unchanged throughout each session. However, the game’s strong adherence to retro design also means it inherits some of the limitations associated with early arcade games. The gameplay loop remains largely consistent from beginning to end, and there is little sense of progression beyond improving one’s skill and score. Players who prefer modern games with structured campaigns, unlockable content, or evolving mechanics may find the experience somewhat repetitive after extended play sessions. Another aspect that may challenge modern players is the simplicity of the control scheme and mechanics. While the controls are easy to learn, mastering the timing and positioning required for survival can take considerable practice. The unforgiving nature of classic arcade design means that mistakes are often punished quickly, which may feel harsh for players accustomed to more forgiving checkpoint systems. Despite these limitations, Cosmic Cavern 3671 succeeds in delivering a faithful recreation of classic arcade design while introducing enough modern polish to make it enjoyable for contemporary audiences. Its focus on terrain manipulation, strategic trap placement, and fast-paced survival creates a gameplay loop that remains engaging even decades after the original concept was first introduced. Overall, Cosmic Cavern 3671 stands as both a tribute to early arcade innovation and a reminder of how creative simple game mechanics can be. By reviving an obscure digging-based concept and presenting it with updated visuals and modes, the developers have created a game that appeals both to retro enthusiasts and players interested in exploring the roots of arcade gameplay. While it may lack the depth and progression of modern titles, its clever mechanics and nostalgic charm make it an entertaining and historically interesting arcade experience. Rating: 6/10
