Corrosion: Cold Winter Waiting [Enhanced Edition]

The interface is bad, puzzles are unreasonably difficult and there's no leading. Overall not a very enjoyable game imo. Having to google a guide for a game is in my mind a sign of a poorly made game. Price also too high for quality.

The only good thing about this game is the level 5 badge

Finished with a guide, because there's no way I would have put some of this together. Otherwise, an easy 100% and decent point & click mystery.

Great adventure game with intruiging storyline (thriller rather than horror in my opinion) and reasonably challenging quests. Moving around is very simple and controls work well.

This is one of those instances where I wish I could give a game a neutral rating. Overall I quite enjoyed my time with Corrosion but it suffers from some extremely glaring flaws that hold it back for me. To rip the band-aid off, unfortunately a lot of the puzzles are just bad. Some of them are creative and fun and engaging, but a lot of them either ask too much of the player or devolve into a mix of fiddly pixel-hunting for what's interactable and truly psychotic combinations of items. There's two instances in particular in the back half of the game that are just awful, both of them involving an unsharpened pencil oddly enough. I also think the writing can be just kind of terrible sometimes. Overall the story is I think very intriguing but the character-writing is often paper thin and corny. You read the diaries of several characters (something the game also has you do one too many times if you ask me) and several of them speak with this comical MySpace dialect that you would never write in a private journal. It clashes badly with the instances where they have spoken lines as well. The acting isn't great, but I think the actors each imbue the characters with enough life to make them feel distinct when there is acting. That's another thing, though. The game will often have you return to one of two terminals. One of them is for putting in information to get an audio log, and the other is basically Google but only certain keywords net you any results. Doing this maybe... Three times each I think would have been fine, but you need to do both about a half dozen times. Combine that with the tendency for progress to sometimes come in the form of a door arbitrarily unlocking somewhere in the building without any notification to the player when you hit a dead end, and it feels like the developers didn't have enough idea of how to organically and creatively get the player from point A to point B. Now, that being said, why is this a positive recommendation? Because for everything the game does wrong, there's a lot it does right. As I said before, the story is genuinely intriguing, and though it can go in some very silly places, overall it's shockingly dark and intense. The atmosphere as well is mostly pretty stellar. It's easy to call the graphics dated, and for 2010, sure, maybe, but I don't really put much stock in that if the art direction and atmosphere is strong enough. The cold, clinical, empty hallways of this subterranean facility create an often uncomfortable atmosphere, and I think the "dated" visuals lend the whole thing an uncanny vibe. There are sections of this game that genuinely scared me, and I think they wouldn't have been as effective had it not been for the visuals. I do also think some of the puzzles are genuinely fun and clever. An early one has you deducing an override code through what seems at first like a very complicated and obtuse math problem, but once you figure it out it's quite satisfying to piece together and it felt like the game gave me the necessary tools to solve it without need of a guide. That being said, if you do decide to give Corrosion a try, you really should keep a guide handy. You will need it for several parts of the game. Overall I think this could have been much stronger, but what you get is an intriguingly dark narrative in a very creepy, sometimes frightening setting, and some genuinely scary moments to keep you on edge. For 7 dollars, that's not a bad deal.
