Things to keep in mind before playing: Vertical assist should be off, as well as vertical aiming, tho this won't help you get headshots, at least you'll be able to aim at the enemy. REVIEW COMPLETE LOG 1 I was gonna at least finish Episode 1 but I kinda get the idea Let's start with the good: - Enemies (Great variety, cool enemies) - Weapon Variety - Music (Good oldschool style retro shooter vibe) The mixed: - Graphics (Design is great on most things, but enemies seem way too large. Am I playing with some 5 ft 7 guy killing everyone in fascist Spain?) - Overall Sound (weak sounds especially for weapons, but good barks from the dogs, and other enemies, while some enemies could sound a lot "cooler" - especially since they look so big, give them bigger grunts - Level design (could've been better in some locations. Can just walk thru big green blocks sometimes. (level 4) , i like the progression on the map so far, but some levels get confusing and boring by level 6 Now the bad: - Weapons feel like they're shooting pellets. The shotgun is an embarrassment. Guns don't have any impact or proper velocity. - Gore. Where's the gore at? Modern retro shooters should at least have what the old ones didn't (destructible heads on headshots, body dismemberment, think brutal doom style - I mean come on man, like they didn't even make sprites for the immolated enemies when you burn them with the flamethrower. Lazy) - I think overall it focuses too much on trying to be a game from the 90's when it's not. It's 2025, make weapons more fun, add secondary fire for each weapon since there's only 7 (9 technically but 1 is a knife and 9 is a dynamite) - The movement is awkward too, kinda like oldschool Doom, where when you let go of the arrow the character still slightly walks towards that direction. Make customizable/level up weapons, idk there's so much you can add man. You want proper boomer shooter/retro try Cultist or Warlock, there's many others out there. Until/if they ever add some new features to this game I'm not planning on finishing it, maybe I'll finish episode 1 so I "kind of get my money's worth" but if there ever is a second instalment or an update in the future, please do something about the state of this game. There's serious potential that just falls short in the end. LOG 2: Changed the review from negative to positive. Why? For some reason I keep wanting to play the game, so I decided to give it another go and try finishing the first episode. Its fun, not gonna lie, but the main issues are still there. It's got a lot of good things going on for it but very old school, after finishing the first episode. There could be more tasks, or challenges or destruction on the enemies. You can't even jump, which is awful for a game like this. I wish I could strafe to dodge bullets or do cooler things. Playing this game is like having a big **** and not being able to use it properly. I finished episode 1, after E1M9 had a major bug in the beginning where the elevator wouldn't go down, so I had to load a previous save and finsih E1M8 again to bypass that. I got used to the size of the enemies and the grunts are not bad, but the guns are awful in terms of sounds. Grenade launcher is a joke. They're fun to use but have nothing behind them. Finally learned how to use the flamethrower properly. Parts of the maps are missing, like you can see thru the bottom of certain sections and there's lots of bugs when it comes to the enemies, sometimes their corpse will be hanging in mid air or dogs get stuck in doors. However, the game is fun and I'm coming back to finish episode 2, which looks like fun since you're in a war zone. More coming. LOG 3: Episode 2 is interesting with having some allies on your side in the first missions. I'm playing as the female protagonist but nothing really changes other than the HUD it shows her instead and the grunts are either done by a woman or a little kid, I can't tell. Could've made the Conviction aspect of the game function differently for each character, that would've been cool. Grenade launcher sucks since sometimes there's invisible barriers in windows and it just explodes in my character's face and kills me. LOG 4: Finished Episode 2. Onto the 3rd. Lost at E3M3 and there's some fire cultists glitching in a wall killing me when I walk by 😂 LOG 5: Finished Episode 3. I'm just happy to be done with this game. Final boss is pretty cool, throw those dynamites in its mouth. Many glitches with the maps up until there. Game doesn't feel remotely finished. FINAL VERDICT: Due to poor choices when it comes to variety in this game, it gets a negative review. There's nothing interesting to do other than finish the levels. You can grab medals to improve certain aspects, mainly just extra ammo for individual weapons. Conviction acts the same for both characters so nothing really changes when you pick the guy or the girl. Glitches all over the place. NPCS get stuck in walls, other portions of the map. More than 5 levels were hard to complete because they got a little confusing. No impact on the weapons, not able to blow up heads or do anything cool. 1 death animation per NPC. Can't even put them on fire when burning them. Weapons could have an alternate fire mode, could have a level up system or something interesting. Good things include great enemy design, setting, weapon variety, good music, some good level design, 3 episodes. Cheats available if you get stuck. That's about it. I still finished it. I want to encourage the developers to make a second game that fixes all these issues. Take some notes from Warlock/Cultic
Not a perfect game, it has its rough edges, but I'm still having a great time with this Doom / Wolfenstein game set in the Spanish Civil War. What stands out most are its good looking sprites and the soundtrack, which is quite punchy. The setting is powerful, with enemies, period weapons, levels decorated with posters and legends based on real ones, and even the items we use. Because, yes, we all recover life with a first aid kit, but eating paella or Iberian ham to heal yourself only happens here. The levels are large and lend themselves to both rushing or exploring them entirely. They also include a bit of interesting features, such as stealth, enemy vehicles, and allied units, which help to give the feeling of being in a real war. IMO, it's more than approved, but please note that a demo is available so you can see for yourselves. You know a game's in trouble when the review starts with a praise of its soundtrack. Well, this game has some awesome music. Everything else, unfortunately, is pretty bad. The movement is awkward, with a slight inertia, like you're piloting a massive mecha that needs a moment to accelerate or stop. The weapons are overpowered, killing most enemies with ease, but also feel like toys because of their plain animation and sound. The enemies are dull, with very simple animations so they move and fall like cardboard cutouts, and frequently just don't wake up despite you shooting right next to them. The level geometry is a bit off, so the enemies keep getting stuck in corners, bullets get stopped by invisible collisions, and you keep seeing the geometry outside the level (and sometimes get stuck in it, or fall through it to your death). The levels themselves are vast, but sparcely populated, with enemies just present here and there, only rarely making for any interesting encounters. The third chapter has the most interesting levels, but is also the buggiest, with glaring oversights that shout lack of testing. Overall, can't recommend.
The guy who made the music literally gave his all. Stuff is hot as surface of Sun. Sadly same cannot be said from the rest of the game. -Movement is rather sluggish for such open and massive sprawling levels -These massive levels contain lot of places to rummage through, but with minimal or no rewards as all. Why make all these cathedrals and barracks with interiors and all if your reward is just few pistol clips and bag of ammo which you are not going to run out in this game anyway? -Dev clearly missed the point of what made games like these good. Making massive realistic harbor with pixel graphics is cool and all, but if you spend 20 minutes going like "...the f am I supposed to go?" until you reach a random button just opens the exit next to it? Why give all those keys and buildings in map if nothing rewards you. -Enemy alert sounds maybe? Some "Schutstaffel!" or "Maranax Pallex!" could make the player react to stuff nearby. The dogs do bark and seem to alert from end of the map. -The game gives so much ammo for the rifle so you can just main it as it also seem to one shot most of the enemies even on highest difficulty. tl;dr: The maps are wide as an ocean, but deep as a puddle. Same with the overall gameplay feeling. I do understand the slower pace of Wolfenstein 3D, but something here is missing. Shame for such interesting aesthetic in retro shooter (Spanish Civil War) to be wasted like this.
A flawed but still fun Wolfenstein-3D like. I recommend you turn off V-sync, cap the FPS to 60, exit the game and start the game up again. It was noticeably stuttering and mouse look felt off before I did those things. While this helps, Only Lead Can Stop Them for the entire playthrough still had enough issues that made the overall experience feel like it needed another layer of polish. Glitches, achievement bugs (I beat the game on hard and it didn't give me the achievement), sometimes nonexistent enemy AI, and inconsistent hit registration when shooting enemies (especially when they're unaware and diagonal from you) just to name a few. Even without the technical issues it's not perfect. Even on the hardest difficulty it wasn't too challenging and I never was short on ammo (Plus I rarely used the supernatural ability). To counter this each episode introduced a new enemy that felt cheap to deal with (riflemen and shotgunners in particular). These aren't deal breakers but worth pointing out. HOWEVER the core gameplay of Only Lead Can Stop Them is still fun especially if you have any love or nostalgia for Wolfenstein 3-D. Your guns pack a satisfying DOSBox punch. You can't take much damage encouraging you to move through the levels slower. It's like a long lost Wolf 3D sequel set in the Spanish Civil War with a banger soundtrack. Very unlikely it'll be your favorite indie retro FPS but it's still worth a look and one playthrough. If it had more time to refine its gameplay and polish things on the technical side it could have been great. Instead it's just okay. Get it on sale.
From the screenshots and trailer it seemed like a fusion between Wolf 3D and Cultic pretty cool I thought and since it didn't cost much I took the bait. Now right off the bat let me just say The music is good The variety in weapons is perfect The levels look amazing The gameplay loop is what you'd expect from a game like this Now what went wrong? HORRIBLE Sluggish movement, you feel like a snail in those vast open spaces and I thought maybe I have to press a run key or toggle something like I did in Classic doom but no its by design Pathetic input feedback I shoot a gun but sometimes it doesn't even do anything as if it was processing my previous input and discarded the new one entirely The vast open spaces and interiors are a good design choice but what's the point of exploring if there is nothing that rewards it? A few places do have some decent loot like ammo but most of it is just empty When these problems stack up on top of each other this stops feeling like a fun game but instead it feels like a chore to do Hard pass 4.5/10
A decent throwback and a good time.
This is one of the best Wolfenstein 3D-clones I've ever played. A good boomer shooter experience with a surprising level of craftmanship and customization.
