Corpse Party is definitely a proof that mystery, horror and atmosphere can also come in 16-bit. It captures that gritty, dark and paranormal feeling of a horror japanese game where a group of high school students gets to a murderous dimension while performing a seemingly innocent friendship ritual. From that point on, they will slowly uncover the tragic stories of the ghosts that roam the halls. I'm personally grateful that the game went global with multiple remakes/editions ported on multiple platforms so that especially as a horror genre fan you couldn't have any excuse to not play it. Lots of possible scenarios, lots to uncover, lots of different endings that offers you extra content, every separate chapter feeling as a small game itself. It explores the theme of friendship separation quickly going horribly wrong, parallel plans of space and truth seeking while being tense and claustrophobic. Pixelated 4:3 format to keep the classic vibe alive, voice acting and modernized character sprites added, how I missed a game like this...
I'm a lazy bum, so I'm just gonna repost my Backloggd review: If you fear missing out on CGs, extra scenarios, and other additional material, I believe the 2021 version is the one with the most stuff (including a BANANAS additional chapter that ties into Dead Patient/Darkness Distortion). However I think this is the most artistically cohesive version. MAGES' involvement with the PSP remake (Blood Covered... Repetead Fear) and every version after that introduced changes that IN MY PERSONAL OPINION, NOT NECESSARILY YOURS, lessen the experience: - The new voice acting is professionally made and with better audio quality. However, I feel like the amateur quality of the original audio adds to the spooky feeling and makes some scares work better. Not only that but some characters I downright prefer the original dub, specially Ooyama Chiroru as Shinozaki. She's putting all of her vocal chords in some of those screams. - The added CGs are a nice touch, but they do add a bit of theatricality that subtract from the horror aspect. Some events that happen seamlessly in this original version suddenly are much more telegraphed. - The artistic cohesion. Because the PSP revamped the backgrounds and kept the original sprites, there was a bit of an aesthetical clash. The backgrounds were more detailed and darker, while the characters were more bright and still kept that chibi aesthetic. Even with the 2021 version, with the remade sprites, they respected that aesthetical clash. Meanwhile the original Blood Covered has less detailed backgrounds but you can tell that they're one and the same with the character sprites. It all looks seamless. - The UI. OG Blood Covered has a great text box, and some other UI elements are stylized in a way that I find superior. The save menu is a great example. The 2021 version also added a pretty unnecessary border art that I just don't think does the game any favours. - The character art. Now, this is a bit of a personal thing, but I think the original character designs convey more fragility and are more interesting in retrospect compared to the very professionally made clean art from MAGES. They're less visually appealing and some might be put off by how 2000s chibi they look, but it's not necessarily a bad thing when we're talking about horror from the era. To illustrate my point, I think the character designs work similarly to that of ALIEN NINE where ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up things happen to very cutesy characters. I know this was the intention because it was for a while a characteristic from Makoto Kedouin as an """horror auteur""" ever since REINES DU SABBAT. Not only that, but it does blend better with the sprite art. A good counterargument to this is the fact that series' artist Sakuya Kamishiro was in charge of supervising the new art and provided roughs that were then properly drawn and painted by Feathered Co. Furthermore, Kamishiro herself then evolved her style and you can see that shift as the chapters went on, culminating in the Dead Patient art were designs look pretty standard. Still, two things can be true at the same time, and I do think the old style is more aligned with the original intent while the newer art is meant to be more commercially attractive. --- It's still mostly the same game, if you've played any of the MAGES version you ain't missing much. However, I really wanted to write this just because for the longest time people complained that PC owners only had this version instead of the more feature packed MAGES one, when in reality there was a bit of an artistic tradeoff that's a bit underdiscussed. I personally think OG Blood Covered is the way to go, but I'm in the minority. Most people discovered and fell in love with Corpse Party with the MAGES versions. So really, it's your call if you want to play the originally intended experience or the one with more stuff and that serves as the basis for the rest of the MAGES series (Book of Shadows and Blood Drive at least, Sachiko Hysteric Birthday is kinda trash).

É MT LEGALLLL GOSTEI MUITO
good story

The first horror game that actually made me feal fear, not scared, but legit fear in this game ignorance is bliss, because the more you know the more you realize how ♥♥♥♥♥♥ the situation is
I am not usually into horror games but this one would probably be up there as my favourite due to its intriguing story and concept.
