Banger Strategy game. Every faction truly is unique and not just a reskin. The game is absurdly lightweight and fast to run and end turns are usually like 5 seconds or so. One of the best round based strategy games I've ever played even tho it has the aesthetics of a rock with googly eyes
Its more simple than it looks like
It is absolutly addicting to play, tons of fun, tons of replayability, tons of vareity, just amazing.
I want to love it, but the balance is way too far gone. Manage to establish an economy? Perfect time for demonic invasion next door as they walk past the 120+ unit armies ravaging your weak side and head straight for your capitals. You leave behind a solid 50-100 man stack to guard a fortified town? Here's Hastur. Way too imbalanced right now for hijinks out of the player's favor.
It was fun
Surprisingly fun!!
Honestly becoming my favorite sandbox game
I'm bad at structuring reviews so I'll just put everything in a list What I like: - Rewards clever thinking, but punishes carelessness. Overextended too early and left your citadel without a guarding army? Stolen by bandits and you're wiped off the board, forces you to think tactically - Lots of variety in armies, no two will play the same and almost all of them are fun, the 2 gnome(?) factions being the exception. Some standouts for me are the High Cultist, Voice of El and Necromancer - No two games will feel the same ever, you can play the same faction 5 games in a row and it'll still feel fresh because of factors like terrain, nearby resources and neighbouring factions - Gameplay is simple and easy to learn but still rewards a strong knowledge of the game, I recommend you try to play each faction at least once, so you know which enemy does which, who needs what and how long it takes for them to become a real threat - Multiple planes of existence is always a fun mechanic What I don't Like: - Very RNG heavy, some factions are borderline unplayable if you can't find a resource deposit or unlock a ritual soon enough - Factions have a tendency to snowball which often leads to games where one becomes a dominant superpower and the others are just barely surviving by holing up in impenetrable citadels, which leads to dull late games that last hundreds of turns as while one side has obviously won it just can't physically be declared winner, I usually resign or go on suicidal last stands when this happens - Dwarves are just really annoying Overall: 8.5/10 very addicting but makes me want to smash my PC, would sacrifice thousands of people again
Great game, not your typical 4x. Patience is key to victory! But the variety is awesome. Every race is unbalanced in its own particular way, which makes them all balanced. It's great fun!
I really want to like this game, but I think it fundamentally lacks polish and balancing. I don't think the game is bad, it's probably an acquired taste, but I'm 8 hours deep (6 games, finished 2) and still not quite liking it. I look at the factions and understand their mechanics, but then once I press play, I have to deal with one of the worst UI/UX experiences I've ever had. The UI is horrible, controls are unlike any other game, keybinds are all over the keyboard with no on-screen reminders, settings are bare-bones, and it's generally just kind of an hermetic experience. Balancing is also kind of weird. The game can feel at times both horrendously slow and too fast for you to react at times. Due to terrain and action points economy, units often don't do much in a turn, but at the same time, an enemy army can barge from the fog of war at any moment and take one of your important cities, wiping any garrison there in the process. Anyway, might give this another try in the future, but I feel like I've done all I could get out of this while still enjoying it.
