For complete review https://youtu.be/4vCYnGcsLng UPDATE as of 2/24/2018 the developer has fixed all the issues stated in my review below - along with several other things. The title now starts with steamVR client preloaded without any issues whatsoever. The graphics also seem to be more crisp and the title still runs perfectly at a smooth 90fps with everything jacked up. I had an issue that took place after defeating the final boss where I did not have enough points to obtain any of the other weapons though I had the claw that was shown as the pistols cost. That has been fixed along with the weapon costs being set at a more reasonable amount along with the addition of labels for such. Original In Conquer you Start out in a dark void with just one controller while you await the decent of your holy transporter. Once the transporter stops before you you bind it to the available controller and then as the darkness washes away you enter the training grounds. From here you are tasked with performing your first teleport with the device and are set to choose one of three weapons from the weapons rack only to notice you don’t have a choice but to take the massive sword which happens to be the only weapon currently unlocked. The other weapons will be made available to you once you defeat the the Big boss and acquire at least 10k points. Be careful since you lose 800pts each time you are killed. Once you have taken the sword in hand you are treated to a short training session which includes breaking stone stacks with a basic swing, learning counter attacks against a golem like training dummy and finally you learn the special power strike that not only slows time but also transfers your swings at a distance tearing enemies to shreds in the direction you swing which reminds me of the old sega genesis classic Strider. Though you are forced to do each of these tasks 3 times in order to make certain you understand the lessons before moving into the battle the tutorial is quite short and to the point. After your training you are transported to a beautiful dark cavern that at first appears to be uninhabited but as you move along you are quickly greeted by what can only be described as hellhounds. At first you are met by 3 of these rabid canines, but as soon as you claim victory over the beasts another group even larger than the previous come running around the corner along with a much larger, faster and more aggressive type. The attack system of the game can seem quite unfair if not broken at the beginning, but as you play you quickly get a grasp on what the systems intended purpose is. The fighting isn’t like most sword games in VR where slashing and bashing enemies with your sword delivers damage with each strike or with varying force. Instead this title put very little emphasis on the basic strike delivering an almost meaningless amount of damage to the enemy , but when you time your strikes in accordance to the enemy starting an attack the connection is devistating. The counter attack is what everything is based around and though you will undoubtedly strike the enemy outside that timing it is still possible to kill them without ever using a counter though depending on the enemy type this can prove an extremely tiresome endeavor. As you progress the from one wave to the next you will notice that there is no way to go back to the previous point or advance into the next without first defeating the wave before you. This can be thought of as a way to contain the battle and keep you from retreating. You either fight or you die. The enemy types vary from location to location and in some instances you may be greeted by multiple enemy types ranging from the easier hellhounds to the the knife throwing, bardiche wielding demons to earth elemental like enemies that are almost boss-like in toughness and in their attack. There is also a puzzle element which adds some flavor to the title. The puzzles aren’t extremely difficult, but aren’t what I’d consider simple either. I personally found myself stuck on one such puzzle for upwards of 10minutes before the solution hit me. Locomotion in Conquer as stated earlier is by teleportation and it works quite well for what it is. I do not care for this type of movement and hope that the developer considers including a combination of smooth locomotion with the teleport as there are instances where the teleport function is a necessity such as leaping from one rock to the next. It is easy to see that this title was built around teleportation in the way the levels are designed and the amount of time that went into the modeling of the device used to move about, but I still feel as if smooth locomotion can work and has a place here as well. Especially when in combat or walking through the caverns. As far as bugs are concerned I did run into one where I could not use my controllers if I loaded the game while steamvr was running. I found that each time I loaded it my controllers would either be shown on the floor while they were actually in my hands or one controller would be left on the floor as soon as I started a new game leaving me without the controller that the transporter tool is dependent upon. This left me unable to continue to the tutorial and left me quite frustrated until I realized that by starting the game without preloading SteamVR everything worked as intended. The developer has been notified of this issue and is currently seeking the solution. Other than that I take issue with some design decisions - The font type chosen by the developer though pretty and a style that matches the title is not the easiest thing to read in VR. A standard clean non-serif print style should replace what is there. The sword seems to have a reach of about 6 inches beyond it’s length. This is without using any special ability. Along with that -while you are unable to do any damage to an enemy by simply wiggling the sword in place you can do damage by slighly widening the wiggle to the point of hearing the swoosh sound of blade. Now this is a common issue in titles featuring weapon based melee and one I don’t really nitpick about as I don’t play in this manner even if I know I can. In my opinion - anyone who does exploit the wiggle damage in such titles is only robbing themselves of the enjoyment and immersion full fast swings bring. The only other issue I see is the lack of being able to choose your dominant hand as this title assumes that you are right handed. For me this is not an issue and in reality all you really need to do is switch controllers to the preferred hands, but for many of us who strap our controllers to our wrists this can be potentially annoying. With that said I do take into consideration that this title is from a very small indie studio and has just been released and issues I stated along with the loading bug has been brought up to the devs and they have been very responsive assuring me that these issues along with optimizations will be coming quite soon. The graphic in Conquer are quite stunning. The atmosphere, sounds and visuals are on par with triple a flat games. This title is extremely well optimized as it runs at a solid 90fps on my i5 devils canyon and gtx1070 with 1.4ss and everything in game turned up to max. As far as price is concerned the asking price of $9.99 is not bad for what you get. The game takes up to 2 hours to complete a first run depending on how fast you figure out the boss. The replay-ability factors in with running the game with the new weapons. This may not be appealing to everyone, but to me it is personally worth doing it again even if the puzzle portion offers no challenge as you already figure it out the first time. With that said, I do recommend Conquer as it is a very polished title. If you like melee combat in VR or titles that force you to move around I think conquer would make a great addition to your VR library. --Flag
Have fun
Experienced on the Oculus Rift with Touch Controllers
This game is a lot of fun and quite the bargain at $4.99 USD currently. I highly recommend you get it at that price. Keep in mind that one playthrough is very short at approximately 1-2 hours depending your skill level. However, you can always buy the two locked weapons that change the playstyle (assuming you have enough money from your playthrough). Each death takes away money though. So you start off with the sword as the other two weapons are locked. I haven't tried the other two weapons. The melee is better than most other VR games where you just flail your arms and win. This game requires that you time your swings carefully for maximum damage. You can still flail, but you'll probably end up failing when there's several enemies on screen. Once you learn the timing of the counterattack, you'll find the game much easier. You'll also gain a special ability that lets you make magical swings which injures enemies at a distance with your air swings. You move by teleportation. I actually prefer it in melee based combat games in VR, except for Primordian which just nailed free movement with melee. But anyways, the reason I like teleportation in this game is because you have to be very strategic when you teleport. Once I found the perfect spot where I could see all my enemies the game was much easier. And you teleport out when you have attacks that you cannot counterattack. So the use of teleportation is all part of the gameplay here. If you just teleport in and out during combat with no strategy, you will die pretty quickly if you're in a big swarm of enemies. The graphics in this game are amazing. The scene where the flying KOI fish flies above you is just jaw-dropping. And the flying enemies look amazing. The boss fight looks epic (it's also a really good boss fight). I just wish you could get out a trusty bow & arrow for this game. I wish that had been an option! The environments don't just look good, they bring a really good vibe to the game. And this game is just not action combat. There's little nice puzzles thrown in. Nothing too hard, but a nice changeup to all the combat. I had fun. For $5 this is an easy recommend. Sale Price Rating 8/10. Normal Price Rating 7/10. I just wish the game was longer and that it had bow & arrow.
It's the game I put on when I want to play something for two minutes and then go, Nah I think I'll just go and sit in the sunshine and drink a whole lot of beers. Its the Wife has been on my back to stop playing games in VR and spend some time with those two little ♥♥♥♥♥ who call me dad game. You know the game that annoys you enough in two minutes you don't feel like loading anything else and just want a break.
great game with great graphics would recommend 10/10
Graphic is amazing, maybe is one of the most attractive fact I ever seen in my VR games list. Busy battle, you need to understand the time of countattack to stop enemy, or use teleporting to avoid be surrounded by enemies. Stand away from anemy and stand still will make quick recover. Boss is make you screaming and overwhelming if you don't battle tacticly. Other 2 weapons are fun as well, espacially the flying blade! Considering the price I will say it's definitely worth it!!! I played untill midnight and quickly fall in sleep:)
