About

Connie and the Essence of Chaos is an old school 2D platformer inspired by some of my favourite childhood games.
In this game you control the limbless hero Connie and her Spirit friend Plum on their quest to defeat Lucilate, an evil overlord who has taken over the island of Cuisinia. Travel through 6 different worlds, battle against tough bosses, free all the imprisoned Spirits and take down Lucilate for good! Harness the power of Essence to solve platforming challenges and navigate your way through tricky levels. Think before you jump because precision is key!

This game is 100% human made.

Connie is the "Thinking Man's" game. During the intense plot, I couldn't help but ask, "Would Connie beat in God's dome with a Rock on the moon if given a chance?" and "Could Connie Un-Society if given reason?" Deep stuff. Philosophical. Stuff Plato would go, "Hmmm" at. The slight nuances and juxtapositions takes with it's level designs and abilities really leads to some great moments and deep reflection. The music as well, is something that resonates deep within your primordial form, etching it's rhythm into your very soul. The art style reminds me of some of the earlier works of "Katsushika Hokusai" before he sold out in 1810; refreshing, vibrant, and full of complex depth. Give this game a chance, at the least you can play the demo for it. You'll enjoy it, I would even go so far as to say it'll change your life, change your perspective, maybe even save your marriage.

Am at 83% completion of the game, bought on release day. It's really good, characters are good, world is colourful and the areas don't get too samey between regions for a food island, there's a good use of the themes. There's a codex that gives lil' lore tidbits as you go, like entries on the boss fights. If you like Rayman 1 for difficulty+being a visual treat then you'll like this. Humour sprinkled throughout and the controls are solid. Story is your simple point A to B stop-the-baddies which works for platformers. Still some surprises to be found in the format. Pretty heavy reveal in the last world, not completed it yet. I will say sometimes the difficulty spikes were a bit much for me. Optional side challenges or 100%'ing for that is fine, not so much 'need to do this part to proceed'. I may lean more casual as a gamer though so would need more consensus on that. If 'woah kaizo level difficulty in segments' is the intent then it landed, just not my thing. Still like the game a whole bunch, where I get stuck I take breaks and do the lil' achievements or try the side challenges, go for unlocks etc - my points of intense difficulty are often related to the swinging mechanic, which I see echoed in a discussion thread somewhere here. When its later into the games' release I may well check for game streams to see if people got past the parts I'm stuck on for a visual clue, as I do want to complete the games' story on my own. Like I want to keep playing even when those difficulty spikes all but force me to take a break to reassess, I wanna see where the story goes. Besides codex entries on things like sentient temple bricks I did see one of the boss encounters is they/them, which is cool lol (without spoiling that character is neat)
Been anticipating this game for a while now, and as far as solo dev games go this is a really really great one. It wears its Rayman-isms on its sleeves but truthfully thats not even the parts of this I like the most. The secrets and collectibles are all hidden *just* well enough to where I feel rewarded for finding them, but I dont feel like I'm being handed them, nor do I feel like any of them are too outlandish for a casual player to find without a guide. Really really good stuff, man. And truthfully, ive yet to reach it, but the deciding factor in my purchase of this game is the addition of a Kirby style boss rush. Which honestly any game with bosses as good as these should have. Theyre all so fun to mash to land hits on while dodging their attacks. They feel much more active than Rayman 1's many "Wait for an opening, dodge, wait for an opening" style bosses that plagues platformers even today. I'm a huge fan and I'm very happy with how this came out. If I had one small criticism so far, it would be the music. Theres some good tracks in there, and some solid melodies, but the midi instruments make it feel a bit amateurish at times. But thats not something I can even complain too much about because it does admittedly create its own charm to me personally. And it's definitely showing improvement from the original tracks in Redemption and Scoop Kick. I don't know music theory, so I cant exactly pinpont what about it needs improvement, but I'm sure someone better equipped than me could help to improve it for the future of this dev's games!
It was very enjoyable through and through. It simulates the gameplay feel of Rayman 1 very well. It is unfortunate it's lacking on the audio -visual side, as the painting-like graphics and amazing soundtrack of Rayman 1 were a big part of the appeal, but it's understandable, since it's made by a solo dev. The difficulty ramps up to quite a steep level by the end, which I love, but others might not. There is also a lot of high difficulty optional challenge for those who want more.
Starting the game: Oh, this feels very nostalgic as someone who played a lot of Rayman 1 (with a small touch of Rayman 3 when it comes to power-ups). Finishing the game: ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, the difficulty increases gradually, so when you reach the final parts of the game, the level of difficulty is set to extreme (Just like it was in Rayman 1)!! If you wonder why fewer than 15% finished the game, it's most likely the difficulty.
Rayman Redemptions, Ryemanni's fan remake of the original Rayman, is one of my favourite video games ever. It makes perfect sense then that it would be Ryemanni to create one of the few true spiritual successors to R1 in the form of Connie and the Essence of Chaos. This game showcases just how excellent Ryemanni is as a game designer, as this features some of the most creative and intricate gameplay mechanics and level design in any modern game. Everything in this, from the charming character design (and the writing of each character) to the music to the puzzles, is crafted with such care and understanding of what makes video games tick. Just like R1, it's also incredibly difficult! While I admittedly do have some issues on how that difficulty is achieved design-wise, I overall enjoyed the challenge and am happy that the game is not afraid to blindside you with truly demanding levels. I really hope this game is a success as we absolutely need more people like Ryemanni out there making these kinds of games. Whatever they do next, I'm sold already!
From what I've played so far, this is a really fun game, especially if you're a fan of the Rayman games or 2D platformers in general. A must play if you played the original Rayman game!
As an indie rayman/kirby inspired game, it is perfect to me at least. It plays exactly as it says in the description, and its quite challenging. Its easy to pick up and play, but trust me, its hard to master. The kind of game that would have been an all time classic if it released back in the era its emulating.
Новый Rayman, наконец-то!
