Company of Heroes is a real-time strategy game set during World War II, and even today it still looks incredible. For something released back in 2006, the visuals have aged surprisingly well, after a hard fought battle, you can zoom in and see the once picturesque villages turned into smoking ruins. Every tank shell, grenade, and artillery blast leaves its mark, reshaping the battlefield in real time. That’s what makes it so special. Few RTS games before or since have captured the chaos and devastation of war quite like this. It still has an impressive cinematic presentation and attention to detail that I admire from a game so old. You can practically feel the weight of every explosion, and the way the terrain crumbles and changes mid battle adds a layer of immersion most modern games still can’t touch.
The campaign, set in the days following D-Day, manages to blend authenticity with engaging gameplay. Sure, some of the realism is toned down for the sake of fun, but it never feels cheap or arcade like. Every encounter feels grounded and tactical. I played through on Expert difficulty, and even though I eventually finished it, it pushed me to my limit. The AI can be a mixed bag sometimes smart and punishing, sometimes easily tricked but that was a common criticism even from critics at launch. Another thing I appreciate, looking back, is how cohesive the design feels. There’s no filler, no bloat just tight, focused missions that reward smart positioning, combined arms, and resource management. The cover system, squad behavior, and destructible environments all work together beautifully to make every engagement feel dynamic. Even the sound design deserves credit the whine of mortars, the distant thunder of artillery, the shouted orders it all pulls you into the experience. It’s not just a strategy game it feels like you’re orchestrating a living battlefield. Sure, it’s not perfect. The pathfinding can be a little clunky, and some missions rely too heavily on trial and error. But even with those flaws, Company of Heroes remains one of the finest strategy games ever made.
