great game play
Possibly the best remake/reimagning of an old game. Let's start with what Cold Waters is - it is a remake of the 1988 Microprose classic "Red Storm Rising", based on the 1986 Tom Clancy book by the same name. As world war III rages in 1980s Europe (when the Soviet Union's Warsaw Pact and NATO were at odds), you are placed in command of a US Navy nuclear powered fast-attack submarine (SSN). You will travel the north Atlantic, from Holy Loch, Scotland to Iceland, Norway and the Barents sea. Tactical missions pit your submarine against enemy submarines and surfaces ships, sometimes aided by helicopters and airplanes. Outnumbered and outgunned, your allies are depth, speed and above all - silence. You'll have to plot your course carefully, manage your speed and depth to ensure that the enemy hears you as little as possible. Take advantage of the increase water pressure of the deep to run faster without too much noise or creep just under the thermocline layer. Use your passive sonar to slowly figure out who and where the enemies are or try for the high-risk-high-reward use of active radar and sonar. Fire torpedoes and guided missiles, dodge enemy shots and try to survive. This is a real-time arcade submarine game - it simulates the tactics used by submarines without simulating the nitty-gritty details of conning a submarine. The learning curve can be challenging and the in-game tutorials aren't sufficient to learn all that you need - but there's plenty of online threads and videos to cover for that. Highly recommended

Played several sub sims through the years....starting with 'Red Storm Rising' (I think I just dated myself...lol). The game is fun to play. Can be challenging gameplay. Realism...? Never stationed on a sub, so.... However, I found the game to be interesting/fun and it can have a steep learning curve regarding torpedo evasion and attacking surface ships. ...but you can figure that out, if nothing else through 'trial and error'.....good luck! When I have a free evening, I'll fire this game up and stalk some unsuspecting prey for a few hours. It will NOT run on my newer iMac (2019 supercharged CPU/memory setup). The PC version runs smoothly and has yet to CTD (a welcomed change from some of the other sub sims out there...I'm looking at you, SH series!). Too bad there aren't any updates from the mfg. I run DotMod (the original base game was fun, but became limiting after awhile). Kudos to the Dotmod creators. You can also find mods from Epic ("Epicmod"), but I've yet to try that one. It's a solid, bug-free, game (never had a CTD to date) in both original and Dotmod. If you can get it on sale, it's truly a gem of a steal! I'd pay full price for it today. Enjoy!
The game is difficult at first but very engaging. The tutorial is pretty intimidating - there are quite a few keybindings to learn and the game talks about how acoustics work depending on thermal layers in the waters etc. But I'd say that it's really worth learning it because the game itself feels very satisfying. The moment when you manage to barely evade a torpedo, or sink an enemy capital ship undetected (while the enemy attacks a position where they THINK you are) feels very rewarding. The UI-based controls (setting your course on the map, choosing to go to a particular depth instead of manually controlling the planes/ballast) allow you to focus on what I think this game is really about - tactics and deception. Firing all your missiles at a target and immediately diving at full-speed and changing course, firing torpedoes "to the side" before positioning them towards your opponent so that they think you're in a different place than you really are. Starting to utilize the thermal layers as a "shield" against sonar. The first few times you encounter a full enemy fleet you'll likely die miserably a couple times. I have to say - I save-scummed quite a few times to practice. But then you realise that a completely different approach is possible and it all works out - that's very satisfying. You'll likely have to read up a guide or two to learn how to play the game well but after that it's great.
This is the closest that a civilian can come to being a captain of a nuke sub, and its awesome!
One of those Steam needs a Maybe option. Cold Waters isn't bad but it's not what I personally wanted. The systems are in depth (pun intended), the modeling is very nice, and the battles get very tense. That said if you're coming here for the stalking experience of say, a Silent Hunter, you'll get some of that but the Cold War technology era is a very different beast from hunting packs of the first two world wars. The name of the game is primarily sub on sub warfare. Very few engagements see you not dealing with enemy subs. This involves a lot of launching lures and decoys to throw off torpedo fire, constant maneuvering to stay out of one spot, and learning when and how to use things like the detectors and wire guided systems of your own torpedo to sink the enemy. It's very tense, engaging, and rewarding when you learn how to make it work, but if that doesn't sound appealing you're best off passing since it's a good portion of all your missions. Even attacks on convoys will usually involve a few escort subs you have to deal with, turning it from dodging escorts and hitting high values, to mostly sinking one or two convoy ships and as many hostile subs as possible. Again, Cold Waters isn't bad, so I won't give it a negative review. It's solid in what it does and has a very dedicated modding scene even six years after release. Come at it with the right expectations and it's a great time. It's just not really for me personally.
Excellent game that does have a bit of a learning curve but once you figure that out it's a lot of fun and will keep you engaged
ein kleiner bug beim klicken auf dem mac und lösung ist etwas darüber zu klicken a ber sonst sehr gutes game
I have been thoroughly enjoying this. Run it with the Epic mod and its Golden. I dig it. Plus its nice to bomb around in my old Frigate and then switch to a LA class boat and truly rule the cold brine. Excellent work from the devs and modders.
O jogo é legalzinho, mas é muito difícil de jogar. Poderia ser mais fácil e intuitivo.
