If you're looking for a serious subsim with actual depth to the gameplay, maybe give this one a miss. Taking into account that it isn't a AAA level game, it's a great effort, but for the price you should expect more. The artificial difficulty completely breaks the stealth element/cat and mouse element of a sub sim game. Avoiding detection and escaping the searching AI enemies is almost impossible and you will die over and over again. This forces the you to keep reloading to try again. Even this would maybe be forgivable if they didn't force you to cycle through the same newspaper cutout/cutscene epilogues before being able to load your game again. The campaign mode is with the overworld map is janky and lacks any real feeling of progress. (Think the Renown mechanic and RPG elements in SH3). The game also desperately needed some more human elements to it. Managing your crew and their careers/skills would have been great here. These and many more oversights in the design of the game just make it a meh experience. The game is average at best and perhaps not worth the price, missing many of the engaging things that keep players coming back. It will be condemned to gather dust in my Steam Library, while I return to Silent Hunter 3, a game that was released 18 years ago .

Watched a few videos beforehand by people and wasn't aware they were running so many mods. After seeing that, it's evident how many features are missing from this game. There might be more going on behind the scenes but the game does an awful job of showing it.
After taking advice from friends with this game on how to approach engagements, learning the controls, etc, its fact that youre dropped within 25nm from the enemy at every single engagement means i have no time to ID anything in the water around me, if I do I already have 5 torpedoes in the water after me. Quite literally just got control over my sub after an approach at 10kn 200ft deep, the moment I open my sensors page to ID the landing ship im supposed to attack I hear "torpedo in the water", look to my right, and 5 of them got dropped on me, what on earth am I supposed to do here if every mission I enter has me already shot at when I start. Its only fun when youre not shot at the moment the mission starts, but out of the some 8 missions ive played thats happened 3 times (ambushed a sub, sunk a Kirov group, deployed some spec-ops).
good submarine game a harsh initial learning curve but it is very fun
Wolfpack’s campaign series piqued my interest for this game and I finally caved. Game is amazing and focussed primarily on submarine warfare with other objectives like assistance in covert ops. Multiplayer isn’t available sadly, but at least there aren’t any locked missions or subs behind a paywall. The developer has unfortunately abandoned this game since 2017, so the modding community is keeping it alive. Shoutout to DotMod for providing additional campaign missions.
Torpedo Dodging Simulator This game would be nice if it was a little more realistic. But torpedoes just get spammed everywhere, even sinking their own ships with them. The wire guided torpedo are far too accurate, seems all the torpedo officers had an external camera to use because they can aim on a dime, track every single movement you make. Reactions of the AI are far too fast, usually they launch like half a second after they detect you, sheesh it takes more than half a second for the sonar man to relay a message to the bridge! Not to mention the bridge to relay a message to the fire command centre afterwards. Can be a fun arcade game to burn an hour but just dont expect anything too realistic. If it was half the price id give a thumbs up, but its a little too expensive. Wait for a discount.
As a former submarine Officer (cold war era), I like the immersive experience, the challenge, and the relatively realistic simulations. I much preferred 688i back when I had it, but that game has long since disappeared. Particularly with the expansion of platforms in the DotMod releases, Cold Waters provides a near endless variety of scenarios and engagements.
9 years later and it's still the best sub sim out there. Coupled with Epic Mod or DotMod, nothing else even comes close.
Let me say this first, I'm going to keep playing it to see if it grows on me. I'm a sonar tech from the 80s and have played several games from this genre. This game could be so much better if they would do just a few things. It seems like they got lazy on a few points and tried to make the folks that like instant gratification happy instead of making a more realistic naval conflict at sea. For example, you start every scenario smack dab in the middle of whatever situation you are supposed to battle. You have no time to plan an attack, set up an ambush or do anything a sub commander would do at sea. Sometimes starting so close to your primary target, missile boats can't even fire their primary anti-ship missiles. Another thing that gets me is the ship formations. It appears that you get a random scattering of vessels on the surface. A carrier or large battle cruiser will have smaller escorts, but they will not be in a logical pattern around the high value unit. To me, it's more of an advanced arcade game where you shoot and then try to avoid the massive torpedo attack that's coming. It's a game where you have to learn unrealistic tactics for a situation you would never put yourself in.
