I wanted to enjoy this game so much, but found myself just wanting it to be over. I almost quit multiple times, but saw it through to the end. The production value is top notch. Amzing graphics, great sound, cool steampunk look, interesting narrator/host. It's clear a lot of hard work went into this game. However, I just found the game to be a bit boring and very frustrating. You cannot interact with much of anything in the rooms. It's mostly just static content. You really have no idea what you are looking for. So, you find yourself eventually just walking around waving your tool until it turns green. You might do this for 20 minutes and then finally find some obscure item. Often times when you use the item, nothing happens, so you start the search again until you find some other hard-to-locate item. The puzzles themselves are pretty easy. The game is mostly just about finding where things are hidden. I found the controls a bit odd as well. Left trigger teleports and right trigger picks up and drops off a single item. As far as I could tell, there is no turn left or right, so you phyically have to turn around in circles. I had to detangle my headset cable multiple times duing the game.
In the top 5 of VR puzzle escape the room games, much better than some of the trash that's out there. Clever puzzles, great graphics, excellent setting and great voice work. Overall the eccentric millionaire inventor story works and you do get immersed in the world. Only things that bothered me was the teleport using a trigger, so used to the touchpad that I kept pressing it well into the game. Had to think to pull the trigger but that's hardly a problem and with more time would get used to it. Recommend to all those who like the puzzle, escape the room games and those who have always fancied being held captive by eccentric millionaires as their plaything. Getting hard just thinking about it, anyway if you're an eccentric millionaire inventor, call me.
2 Minute Video Review → https://youtu.be/DGjp8DYMk4A I've played a lot of puzzle/escape room games, this one I found the most challenging of all. It requires paying attention to the tiniest of details, I had to re-examine the same area multiple times before seeing new clues. You get a great bang for your buck with this one. It will challenge you, no question!
CM is a very polished VR room escape experience. The puzzles require a bit more thought and exploration than your average escape game, but with persistance you can get through with that pleasing sense of achievement :)
To test us, the mysterious figure, always in the shadows, locks us up in his mansion. Now we have to solve in good old escaperoommanier the puzzles distributed in the different rooms to prove that we have what it takes to be included in this obscure group of the owner... The game offers full roomscale combined with teleportation, a good choice, because the rooms are sometimes very large. Graphically the title looks great, especially in the field of escaperoom games, which often have a rather minimalistic graphic style. The puzzles are creative, even if they are sometimes repetitive in principle, only the lack of clues can be a bit frustrating for beginners of the genre. Sometimes you just have to take a little break, when you can't see the forest for the trees anymore ;) The game doesn't offer the player a body inventory, but you can put items you need on certain places in the room, so that you have your "hand" free again. Or you can use the object directly, if you already know what it is for. This system is a bit confusing at first, but it makes sense and fits well into the game flow. Normally it is annoying when the player has no hands, but only the controllers are shown. At Cliffstone Manor, however, we don't have hands either, but two interesting tools that are designed with great attention to detail, so it doesn't bother me that you can't see hands. -I'm not quite sure why, we got these tools, but they fit very well into the setting. :) All in all Cliffstone Manor is a very good, beautiful and story based escaperoom adventure in medium difficulty. Walk around and look under tables simulator with bad controls. Audio is balancing is bad, some stuff makes the ears pop whilst things like voices can't be heard very well. Un-intuitive controls - why can I only interact with things using my right hand? why not just adopt the teleportation controls that are found in every other VR title instead of using a trigger? Why is the table in the room my inventory system? And why the f*** is a broken light bulb a lock pick.
It's pretty good. Yes, it may rely on "hidden switches" a tad bit too much but it held my interest. The developers are very helpful and will ring in if you need assistance (which I did when I could not see one of the switches to save my damned life!). A couple of the solutions to the puizzles are a little contrived, and others are so simple you wonder why you're bothering, but their heart is definitely in the right place and I look forward to seeing what else they come up with. There is some talent here!
My first true dud out of all the escape room games. I can't rant about which puzzles were awfully implemented without posting spoilers, so I'll just put a big _no_ here.
