GOTY 2025 for a reason. Masterpiece.
The art style of this game was incredible. I'm not typically moved by the visual artwork of games, but this game was an exception. There were many times that I simply stopped to admire the virtual scenery. It's hard to believe that such a small team of devs worked together to produce this masterpiece!
Awesome
My First Turn-Based Game
My very first step into modern turn-based RPG, I was never really into turn-based games, but Expedition 33 totally got me into them. It’s not just boring menu clicking, but a great mix of strategy and fast reflexes.
Pros:
Combat: Absolutely perfect. It is not a simple menu tapping experience. With the addition of real-time reactions such as parries and dodges, the gameplay is highly dynamic and very engaging. When you perform a perfect parry, you feel like you just KO-ed your largest foe with a single blow to the jaw. Story and Mood: The story is grim and original and unique. It is in French style, and its visuals are inspired by the Belle Époque era (I think I read somewhere in one video). The characters and the antagonist itself are brilliantly conceived. Graphics: The game is beautifully made. The environmental details, attack animation, and visual design in general are simply incredible. Soundtrack: The soundtrack adds to the mood and increases its intensity greatly when it comes to boss battles. I even saved some of the music on Spotify.
Cons:
Toughness & Parry actions: For those not enjoying timing mechanics in games, this can be quite annoying as missing parries means getting beat up hard. Of course, that’s all about knowing when enemies are going to attack and memorizing their moves. Linear Locations: The open world exploration is somewhat linear in some places and could be more free-flowing. Only One Combat System: Basically, there’s only one way of doing things with combat and it's always the same throughout the whole game, and it may be boring after some time. First Half of Act 2: No idea why, but the first half of Act 2 was just too boring for me. Controls on PC: Sometimes controls on PC are a little bugged and delayed. Try to play it on a console instead if possible. Or maybe the problem is already fixed by now on PC, I don’t know.
Is it worth trying?
If you like turn-based RPGs or you want try, then yes, I’d say it’s worth your time and money. Story is kind of crazy, but beautiful. Rating: 8/10 ⭐
