Reviews
The last of the doom stack variety of civ games and my favorite personally. Gets a bit boring in the late game as you're usually just cruising to victory at that point but what's new with 4x games am I right
Hard to play well at high difficulties, which is good
Writing this pointless sentence, because Steam refuses to stop asking me for more than a thumbs up.

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,400 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

To say how old this game is its still a fun game
Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword remains one of the greatest strategy expansions ever made: deep, elegant, endlessly replayable, and rich with meaningful decisions from the first turn to the last. Its blend of empire-building, diplomacy, religion, warfare, technology, culture, espionage, and late-game corporations creates a strategic sandbox where every map tells a new story. The game rewards patience, planning, adaptation, and long-range thinking while still allowing bold gambits, dramatic recoveries, and unforgettable “one more turn” moments. What makes Beyond the Sword shine is its balance between clarity and depth. Each system is understandable on the surface, yet layered enough to support years of learning and mastery. Leaders feel distinct, civilizations have identity, and every difficulty level reveals new lessons. Whether building wonders, managing trade routes, planning a war, founding cities, or chasing a victory condition, the game consistently offers meaningful choices rather than empty complexity. For players who love thoughtful strategy, historical imagination, and systems that reward careful study, Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword is a landmark experience — a rich, enduring masterpiece of turn-based empire design.
Best game in this genera by far, and far superior to the versions that followed and focused on pretty graphics with small size and a tiny map. Still waiting for them to get back to this level, I have every edition of this game from when it first came out in the 90s on floppy, this is the ultimate version before they lost their way. Hopefully one day they will reach this level again.
Sid Meier's Civilization is without doubt a great series. It balanced historical breadth with a deep root in history and culture, and gamified often-ridiculed elements for the fun factor. A lot of people must had learned a thing or two about history from playing Civilization; my father introduced me to Civilization II when I was very young. While I was not good at playing it, browse around the game, like simply watching the introduction clips to world wonders, felt touching and moving. That was the weight of history and it was everywhere in the game, including in many of the materials in its visual presentation. The game had a great impact on me. Sure, the series is not education software; it never meant to be. After all video game needs to be entertaining. While important, the more recent entries seem to treat themselves too seriously as games, especially as board games, where rules and balance need to be rigid. The visuals also turned vivid and cartoony. The later entries feel a lot like physical board game adaptations, but there was never one in the first place. They also felt a lot more "native" as games for entertainment, stripped of historical or cultural reference and importance. While the design direction for the series shifted towards a more pragmatic and rigid direction, more in line with institutionalized strategy game design, the fourth entry in the series is the very peak, because it still somewhat stayed true to and actively embraced the duality embedded in the identity of the series. In this sense, perhaps it is not too ridiculous to call it the "last good Civilization." – if that sounds overrated, "last good square Civilization." – you can’t argue with this.
Civ 4 BtS remains the pinnacle of the old-style Civilization games that has not been surpassed or even matched by its sequels or imitators. Other Civ games have their charms, but this is the game I would recommend without hesitation to anyone who is interested in Civilization games.
Immersive time sink of potentially hours (or days - if you want) and worth every minute. Best all-around world creation game I have ever played. I purchased some of the subsequent chapters (V, VI, etc) but I find myself always coming back to IV eventually. With the expansions (Warlords, et. al.) it is hard to imagine ever really getting this version played out. Highly recommended. Enjoy!!
