Unfortunately, I am thoroughly disappointed in this purchase. Maybe my mistake was choosing this as my second "Choice of..." game after Choice of Robots. Beyond that, I'm a huge vampire nerd, so I was really excited about this one. -Multiple times throughout both read throughs of Choice of the Vampire, I felt that my choices/actions were directly contradicted within the following page or two, which kind of nullifies the "choice" part of the equation. -Unlike Choice of Robots, I felt no emotional connection with my actions, any of the characters, or the story in general. -No character development, no substance. -Last, this isn't a complete story. I got to a point where, rather abruptly it said, "Save your name for the second installment!". Both of my read throughs failed to complete a full story. Not worth purchasing. This sure felt like a way to make money off of the "Choice of..." type games, not much more than that.
Can I recommend this game? No. The reason? It gives a literal 'F**k Y**' page to the player. So what happened? I convinced my girlfriend to give this game a try; if she did she would buy it for herself. Instead, she glitched into a page that brutally killed her character and the next page said 'F**k Y**'. Some games will have a page like this appear if a player tries to mod/cheat the game. However, I know this was a glitch because I was sitting right next to her as she played it. Would this be enough to make a review of it? Normally, no. However, I made a post on the CoG forum, calling it out, and giving a sarcastic 'classy move' comment...and then the post was made invisible to the community at large. So, I decided to post mention of it here. Because of the page itself, my GF isn't going to purchase any CoG games, no matter what. I will still buy those from writers I know are good people, but I won't give any more recommendations. For all I know, my CoG post might be visible again, or the page mentioned above is edited out, but it doesn't matter.
I just found out that they cencur there games for steam sin the iOS version of this game lets you feed on "ladies of the night" and that option is removed for the steam version. I find that very disapointing and makes me thing twice of purchesing stories from them knowing that there stories are cencured for the platforms they are put on. I hate cencurship and i hate it when they just hate it when everyrthing/everybody have to be so damn polite. So knowing they cencur there products and and are so damn afraid to post mature content, mature as in 18+ content and just makes it children friendly. I for one feel disapointed and this makes me question what else they have cencured and removed from there other stories on steam. I might not even want anything more to do with there stories on steam sins they cencur there content here. And i HATE that! I hate btw also suspected this in other stories but not actually caught it untill now. Got pictures of it as wel...
You play as a recently turned vampire and learn to navigate the politics and power games of vampire society. The author does a good job of keeping you in the dark, but encourages you to be curious. Have to learn to stop thinking like a human and start playing as a vampire. Pros: -Good character creation options, which you can improve over time. -Short character summaries in the index are helpful. -Playing as a vampire is interesting and immersive. -Big consequences for your decisions. -Income system is well done. -Adaption/Anachronism bar is interesting. -Uses real historical events. -Lots of options to feed on different people, including historical figures. -Good number of decisions, not too much text. Good replay value. Cons: -I found the overall story kinda meh... But it does get the better the more attached you grow to your character. -Some characters speak with accents. You'll either find this off putting or immersive. Overall: -It's one of the more unique CYOA, but it can be slow at times. I do recommend getting it, but it's not one you absolutely have to play.
Unfortunatelly, I couldn't enjoy the game. Yet again, it felt full of anachronistic behaviour and social norms coming out of todays woke culture, such as having my male character appologize for going to rescue his lover. The whole atmosphere of the game just felt wrong for a vampire adventure in the early 19th century American South.
I am somewhat mixed about this game. There are some interesting aspects, such as the way this game handles history in a somewhat "realistic" way (given the existance of vampires). The game doesn't focus primarly on high and mighty vampire struggles beyond your grasp, which i quite enjoyed. The writing is quite good at individual moments and sometimes choices actually feel impactful.
Flaws
Fundamentally the game lacks investment in essentially all characters, including your PC. To my mind this is due to a few reasons: 1, A long and somewhat overambitious story leaving individual encounters very underdeveloped. A good example of this is that you're simply asked which type of people you want to feed on, without actually taking part in any of those everyday encounters (until much later into the game, and in that case short and unrelated to your previous choice). 2, The game relies very heavily on stats to the detriment of choice in many cases (lots of cases where options are locked behind skillchecks) and favoring linear gameplay. I generally dislike stats in this type of game and I felt this to be the worst game I have yet to play in that regard. Lastly the game ends suddenly by asking you to pay for the sequel, which is a direct continuation of the story at a point to which the game had been building up for some time, causing a dissatisfactory ending. 5/10
Plot stops abruptly with no resolution and promise of a sequel. VERY disappointing. Regret wasting my money. :(
The first game : it's interesting, has a nice thematic (which is illustrated well), nice characters, nice storytelling and storyline and it refers to historical events a lot in a smart way. You have a large array of choices and the story really take those into accounts. You may experience the story differently using a lot of differents builds for your main character. The flaws being : Some useless skills, some typings mistakes, some bugs or badly scripted scene that takes the wrong background as reference for your previous choices and finally, the lenght is only average for its price (which I admit is high compared to other CYOA of the same lenght) Now that's my opinion for the first game. Now the second... you can go and read my review on the second game (same flaws but worsened and even some new flaws appears !) . It's just weirdly not comparable. I don't understand how I'm putting a "recommended" for the first one and a "not recommended" for the second one. Again, quoting the character of Samantha Withers from Choice of the vampire one, "I'm destroyed !"
The story is not finished and will probably cost even more money. The base game contains two chapters that you can get for free on the website. The DLCs contain chapters three and four, but even they don't see the story to completion. Despite the high length of the average playthrough, the replayability is quite low. A lot of text is just something out of a history book, with most of it having nothing to do with your character. The checkpoints are placed too sparsely, at the beginning of each chapter. So, if you wish to change something late in the game, you'll have to click through a lot of story-irrelevant historical facts. Stats-wise your vampire ends up pretty weak too, even at the end of the game. Despite being nearly a hundred years old, your character gets very few chances to hone his skills. You'd think that all those decades could be spent getting more powerful and yet you turn out to be quite average in terms of skills. My warrior trained, recently fed vampire couldn't stand against three mortal soldiers in the middle of the night, But, somehow, despite all of that, I liked this CYOA book. My advice would be to wait for the story to be finished and buy it when it's heavily discounted. PS I've no idea why my playtime is under ten minutes, for I certainly played it through to the end.
