About
Chickenauts is a companion-based, action roguelite. Blast your way through a massive, randomized alien mothership with an assortment of lethal, mutated chicken companions at your side.
It all starts when some goshdarn pesky aliens land right outside your farm and abduct all your chickens to run all sorts of insane genetic experiments on them!
Grab your gun and mutated chicken companion of mass destruction to teach these alien scum a lesson about trespassing and private property.

Create unique companions of mass destruction with each run.
While teaching alien scum a lesson or two, you’ll free, arm, and mutate various chicken companions, equally hell-bent on revenge and destruction. Each chicken companion is inspired by pop-cultural icons and brings very different traits and abilities.
With multiple, stacking mutations to pick from along the way, you will create overpowered, game-breaking chickens of mass destruction on each run.

Every run brings something different from the last.
Fast and varied runs deliver short but intense sessions made up of compact, randomized rooms that take under a minute to clear.
You’ll face multiple chicken abomination enemy types and bosses, ensuring no encounter is the same. Rooms, enemy spawns, plus all mutations, upgrades, and loot drops are all randomized, so each run is unpredictable and encourages experimentation.
But failure doesn’t mean total defeat. Collected eggs, weapons, and unlocked companions all carry over when you go again.

My wife told me she loved me TWICE in one day after I played this
Wicked fun top down roguelike with some great humor mixed in! wicked excited to see what is added in the future. Could use some work on bullet collision and some other things but regardless an enjoyable experience if you've enjoyed the binding of Isaac, enter the gungeon or any other bullet hell roguelikes.
incredibly buggy
A nice top down shooter. Nothing amazing.
I am so thankful that I was able to get a review key for Chickenauts through Keymailer. This companion based, action roguelite game was so much fun to play. I love the upgrades that you can get for your chicken companion and I loved fighting all of the different Alien Chickens. I definitely recommend checking this game out.
I'd like it if the enraged status effect had a way to show it's active but otherwise very good!

Mutant space chickens stole your chickens, so now you and your chicken bro fight chickens to save chickens while mutating your chickens into even weirder chickens. 10/10 Chickens. Feels like Nuclear Throne, but without the destructible environment. Really cool and surprisingly challenging.
All the premise you need is that you're a farmer whose chickens have been abducted by a space chicken. Armed with a gun, you enter a mysterious dome that has appeared in your backyard and descend through several underground stages, determined not to stop until you get your chickens back. Just like the story itself, the gameplay keeps things simple, with straightforward controls and mechanics that are easy to pick up. You control your farmer as you shoot space chickens and their various mutations, while rolling to dodge projectiles or avoid hazards such as lasers. Progression takes place through a series of small rooms and arenas where you must defeat every enemy before the exit opens. Enemies often spawn very close to your position, which keeps the pressure on and encourages constant movement. Ammo is unlimited, so you'll never have to worry about running dry. Instead, your focus is on collecting coins and eggs dropped by defeated enemies or found inside destructible objects such as crates and vases. Both serve as currencies, but in different ways. Coins are only useful during a run and disappear whether you win or die, while eggs are permanent and can be spent back at the farm. Another reward for clearing rooms comes in the form of keys. Like coins, they are lost when a run ends, but they can be used to open locked doors and treasure chests that usually contain valuable loot, most often coins. Other rewards include chicken legs that restore health and potions with a variety of effects, ranging from healing and bonus damage to random loot. You can only carry one potion at a time, and most effects last for a single room. Every room contains enemies, but the type of reward available is shown on a panel next to the entrance. Most rooms are marked with crossed swords and function as standard combat arenas with the usual rewards. Others display an upward arrow icon and lead to an artifact for your farmer. Artifacts provide small passive bonuses, such as increased damage while at full health or a faster firing rate in exchange for reduced damage. They are useful enough to collect whenever possible, even if they rarely feel powerful enough to completely change the outcome of a run. There is also no description explaining what an artifact does before you pick it up, but since all of them are beneficial, there is little reason not to grab every one you come across. Since your farmer's abilities are fairly limited, much of your offensive potential comes from the chickens you rescue. At the moment, there are only three chickens to unlock, each offering its own unique perks. You can bring only one chicken into a run, but it is invincible and can be instructed either to hold a position or target a specific enemy. This makes it incredibly useful for sending into large enemy groups to clear them out safely, or for keeping pressure on tougher bosses while you focus on survival. Chickens can be upgraded through modifications found in rooms marked with a chicken icon. After defeating all enemies, you interact with a machine and choose one upgrade from a random selection of three. If none of the options appeal to you, you can spend a key to reroll the choices. These upgrades are genuinely fun and add some much needed variety. You can equip additional weapons, apply a leech effect that drains health from nearby enemies, increase coin drops, and much more. In certain rooms, you are given a choice between continuing to the next stage or visiting a shop. Shops offer a single key, chicken leg, potion, and artifact. If you have enough coins, you can buy everything, although stock never refreshes, meaning you'll need to find another shop later. Shops also contain a slot machine that costs one coin per spin and can reward keys, coins, eggs, or absolutely nothing. If you're sitting on a large pile of coins, it's often worth spending them here because it provides one of the best chances to acquire extra keys. The ultimate goal of each run is to fight through several rooms and reach a boss battle. Whether you succeed or fail, returning to the farm allows you to spend eggs on permanent upgrades. There are four stats to improve, including health, movement speed, attack speed, and the number of coins you start each run with. Costs increase with every upgrade, but the bonuses themselves feel fairly minor, usually adding only a small percentage increase. The same issue applies to the chickens and weapons. As mentioned earlier, there are currently only three chickens available, and weapon variety is similarly limited. There are four weapon types in total, all of which must first be unlocked by finding their blueprints during runs. Fortunately, unlocking content doesn't require much effort because the game regularly places special jail rooms along your path. These rooms either contain characters who return to the farm after being rescued or one of the unlockable chickens. It's entirely possible to discover everything after only a handful of runs. The limited amount of content feels appropriate for the current price, and that's ultimately what the Early Access label is for. More updates will undoubtedly expand the game over time. Right now, it's a decent roguelite that offers a couple hours of fun, but it may be worth waiting until future updates add more variety and reasons to keep coming back.
