I'm gonna have to say that I have a somewhat mixed feeling overall on this game. On one hand, I love that "playing Nuclear Throne" feeling I am getting while playing, but at the same time, something just feels off. I have several gripes which are, ultimately, making me not enjoy this game overall. I'm having fun many times, but other times, I'm just annoyed or frustrated or straight up bemused. Let me clarify with some of my negative experiences: 1). The enemy AI is just completely and utterly unpredictable. Many of them move in random directions AND at random intervals. I don't mind my game having some difficulty spiking, but there just doesn't seem to be any way I can predict what any of them are gonna do most of the time and given the shallow FOV you are stuck with, it seems like an arbitrary way of increasing the difficulty? "They" can see you.. but you can't see them? Hmmf.. The final boss in the first and second "acts" are easier than the litters of enemies around them leading up to those battles. 2). Touching on the above, but one of the mechanics to mitigate the difficulty is of course, a dodge manoeuvre.... a manoeuvre though... that often takes you out of one danger and slaps you right bang and centre into another one because the direction isn't super easy to control (playing with controller), and the distance you cover is obnoxiously far. And that distance is a major part of the problem... because of the limited view distance, there's often NO WAY of knowing if dodging in a specific direction is a sensible choice. 9 times out of 10, I actively AVOID dodging because it often gets me into more trouble than I was in, in the first place. Where's the sense in that? And I don't even think it's fixable in the game's current state. Advice for the devs?? Maybe reduce the distance covered, and add an increased amount of time invincible after dodging - and to prevent it being too OP, just increase the delay on recuperating them? 3). The RNG... It's partly due to the above that I feel whether or not I have a good run is just purely down to the complete and utter RNG of the game. Will a good weapon drop? No? Well consider your run royally f*cked. Half decent gun? OK... crap attachments drop and crap attachments in the mini "stores".. your run is royally f*cked. Spawn in a procedurally generated level that backs you in to a corner with questionable weapons... royally f*cked.. and so it goes on. The game seems more about luck than skill.. and I think that's fundamentally why I don't find it hitting that reward part of my brain. 4). The progression skills that you can put points into are pretty boring and so gradual that I often barely notice them making a difference (I'm sure they do.. but where's the fun in any of them?). Also.. level 15 is the maximum a character can go.. but if you want to use the "final" skill you have to remove most of the points you have elsewhere as these require 5 skill points EACH. So far, I've found you are better off NOT using them.. which ultimately makes them appear poorly designed. 5). The individual character skills seem a little useless in most scenarios. Even with powerups - which I don't take most of the time because they are less useful than health or ammo upgrades anyway. The character I end up playing most so far is the guy with the shields for a skill, and I find that's because his shield skill is 100x more useful than dodge to get me out of a sticky situation. Sadly for me personally, I don't see an easy route to bring this game out of the current "rut" shall we say. These mechanics will need to be reworked from the ground up and tested thoroughly before I would consider the game "fixed" and change me to a positive review. Others may feel differently about the game and these are just my opinions of course. You might enjoy everything the game has to offer so far, but right now, it's just not what I wanted or expected. I have another game from the devs of Dead Cells in my library called "Windblown" and I have a similar sad feeling about the state of that game too. However, I am a MASSIVE supporter of small/indie studios and I would love to see this game get better. We should all support these smaller studios more and at least give these types of games a go. I'm at 10 hours played as it is and for £11? I cannot argue with that. I've bought some "AAA" games before and played some of them less than that. The game just needs some more love x
I really wanna love this game, but there are two things killing it for me right now: meta progression, and time to kill. Leveling up characters to unlock perks OUTSIDE of the individual runs just doesn't feel good to me. I feel like I'm cheating instead of just getting better at the game. I played through the first area (Fenrir) without touching the skills and I had a good time, but when I got to the second area (big snake), the tankier enemies made the levels feel like a slog, especially with starter/early weapons. For example, the starter pistol deals 1 dmg per shot, and on the first two stages you can expect 10-20hp enemies. Not even a difficulty thing, it's just time consuming to cut through them. It also cuts the other way, with the Player having ~7 HP, but most enemies dealing 1 to 2 damage. I'm still following this game, because I'm interested to see how it shapes up through early access. But I would be much more interested if the abilities I see in the Skill lists were moved over to something that could be achieved in the runs themselves, and if the early game felt a bit more impactful.
"Oh, look! Another projectile from off screen has appeared and killed me with AoE before I could move!" A very appealing game damaged by utterly terrible combat design. Enemies explode on death, leave behind traps that don't appear immediately, shoot from off screen, bounce damage around cover, so on. It's also got very poor meta progression. I don't know why games want you to get nothing from a run. It's one of many games that sucks you in and leaves you feeling disappointed when you die suddenly and have nothing to show for it.
One of the most slept-on recent action-roguelites on Steam. Yes, it's heartily beholden to Nuclear Throne, but NT is the godfather of the genre and not enough games that followed have given its appropriate honors. This one does, full stop. Since it's much newer than NT, Odinfall adds gobs of other systems, unlockables, meta-prog stuff, and a sharp style and goofy attitude. I've only cracked into the second area thus far, but I noticed that only 7.5% of the community has beaten Fenrir!? That's what spurred me on to write this review and climb on my soapbox. I can't speak about the game front to back, since I think I'm quite a ways from any version of its EA endgame as it is, but I think this is a wonderful example of this style of game. The additional mechanics layered onto the NT core don't seem frivolous or excessive, but I do think they take some time to get used to and utilize properly. And best of all? You will absolutely know for dang sure if you like this game within the refund time window, so you literally CANNOT LOSE. Give it a shot, I really want to see more people vibe with this game and nudge it to sustainable and healthy growth. There's a fantastic core here and quite a lot of content so far, regardless of the Early Access label. If you're anything like me, once you've properly rinsed a roguelite you start to putter and fret. You're itchy, you play the old games you always liked but no, no, you can't help but want something new. Something that does it all correctly and sparks your imagination and urgency. I've got shy of 5 hours in the game so far, so take it from a veteran in this particular subgenre - Odinfall's got those goods.
Great game! Love the visuals, weapons, upgrades, smoothness of the gameplay. But i can't recommend a game where you spend your time creating super nice builds and then you get constantly crashes without saving, i am more then willing to buy a game again if crashes are fixed, having a game like this with constant crashes is not worth it.
It feels clunky and teared. Zero hints on weapons stats or mods, no inventory screen to inspect current build, no comparison when trying to choose out of two. You can't detach a specific mod, only by the order they were installed in a weapon. In its current state I would give it somewhere 6 out of 10.
crash, balance totally sht, bullet bigass ♥♥♥♥♥, everything kill u in 1 sec, not fun
Pure fun. Took a few hours to get used to since I'm pretty horrible at twin stick shooters, but after that break in period it became less frustrating. For anyone having trouble early on just stick with it and in no time you'll beat Odin. I really prefer having a good melee weapon and wait for some crazy good gun to come along. I've had Nuclear Throne on my wishlist for years and after this I'll probably finally purchase it. At 38% complete I feel that I've experienced what the game has to offer unless I want to grind more to unlock stuff, but I also have only played with 2 of the characters so there's still a lot to do. Once you've experienced the 3 levels it is slightly repetitive, but maybe I'm wrong. That being said for still being in Early Access it's very solid and stable.
https://youtu.be/g7LWAv9R9eg Fewer player driven choices leaves builds quickly feeling stale despite the rogue like approach for multiple runs.
Played for less than 20 minutes and the game crashed. Rebooted it and tried to make the window borderless, caused the mouse icon to scroll up infinitely. Closed and restarted, same issue. Uninstalled and reinstalled, same issue. Refunding.
