This is a really cool game. I love the graphics this game has, it has a steampunk theme to it. The music is great. You'll notice the theme song throughout the game. Since this is a VR game, it really makes you feel immersive. Along your journey, you can explore this world and interact with the surroundings. You have this side kick, Boka, who helps you on your journey. If you like Legend of Zelda, then you might like this game. It has various puzzles you need to solve along the journey. Some puzzles were difficult, some were easy. If you keep trying, I'm sure you'll finish it. I finished this game and liked my journey and I hope there is a Chiaro 2 coming out. I can't wait for it. I actually want to buy a cute Boka stuffed animal, if available, because I loved this game.
Chiaro and the Elixir of Life von Martov Company ist ein sehr schönes humorvolles Puzzle-Abenteuerspiel. In Chiaro and the Elixir of Life you play a young engineer named Chiaro (spoken by Taylor Gray, Star Wars: Rebels) who lives in the magical realm of Neverain. Together with his faithful Pingubot Booka, Chiaro embarks on an adventurous journey to discover the long lost secrets of the alchemists of the former founders of Neverain and builders of the Living Machines. Chiaro and Booka encounter many different types during their adventure, such as the peanut-butter-loving alchemist pig, with another preference; singing. In fact we meet a singing pig! The story about the elixir of life is spun with humor. Despite the really good and funny English soundtrack, there are always little soundbugs. Sometimes the off-voice starts in the wrong place or the environment remains silent despite interaction. Unfortunately, some animations are quite exaggerated and especially Booka can be annoying. However, Chiaro and the Elixir of Life is also a family-friendly game and appeals to the younger audience with the childish Booka. The two friends move freely through the hose-like levels, which are often limited by invisible walls. The imaginative world is kept in a not too extreme comic style and also fits quite well with the kind of humor that is present in the story. With the possibility to combine teleport and free locomation, Chiaro gets to every imaginable place in the 10 levels. In addition, Chiaro's player can personalize the controls in detail in the menu that is always available, but in the course of the game Chiaro also gets another type of movement. This allows him to enter places that are extremely difficult to reach through portals. He throws his magic ball, called anchor, and then enters the point where the ball has landed through a self-opening portal. Fantastic. Unfortunately, there are always clipping errors in the game. For example, you can run through a spiral staircase instead of entering it. In the further process it becomes clear that the stairs should not be used at all, but an alternative way must be found. For example, you could have used another stair model so that the player is not unnecessarily confused. Unfortunately, you will often encounter two-dimensional textures or invisible walls that limit the levels. But the graphics and performance will be much better from chapter four on and it's fun to help Chiaro to find the elixir of life and to solve the various puzzles on the way there. The puzzles are all fair and relatively easy to solve, often it just takes some skill in movement or the right moment to trigger a certain reaction. At the end of the exciting and unfortunately short story (approx. 5h) Chiaro of course expects a neat and not so uncomplicated final fight, with help from an unexpected side. Chiaro and the Elixir of Life is a family-friendly, humorous adventure game, therefore a clear recommendation (if the family understands English) However, the technical implementation is not so good that the current full price seems to be justified. Since the game also appears again and again in the Sale, one can access then however there without hesitation.
Experienced on the Oculus Rift with Touch Controllers
You can view my review & gameplay here: https://youtu.be/2kK-Ezt0yTE This was a very tough call for me on whether to recommend or not. On the one hand, this game does a great job of world-building and you do feel like you're on this epic adventure in VR with interesting characters. On the other hand, this game is so full of bugs that it really takes away all the good feelings you might have had about this game. Whole game took me about 4 hours to finish, with all the bugs. Without the bugs, it probably really took me 2.5 to 3 hours at the most. The game is mostly about either puzzles or this throwing mechanic. The puzzles were pretty straightforward and not really a challenge. Usually, it was just object hunting or the use of simple logic. I found the throwing mechanic to be more challenging because you do have to be precise & sometimes quick as well (however, I was playing seated so that may have added to the difficulty). You do have full locomotion, smooth turning, seated, & comfort options as well as visuals & sound settings. The story is interesting, but I found it confusing as well. Without giving away spoilers, you're helping out your robot friend Boka. There's even this very nice musical number featuring a singing pig. There's obviously a lot more going on in this world that is left to the imagination. However, you never really figure out what's going on, or at least I didn't. In the end, as much as I wanted to like this game as it's exactly the type of game I usually enjoy, it just had too many bugs. I fell through the world several times in my playthrough. The game crashed. I clipped through almost everything. Boka didn't spawn in Chapter 2 when I made the tea several times until I found a fix by loading the chapter manually. All the characters froze during a restart on the last level, etc., etc., etc. Rate 4.5/10. Buy on deep sale only if you're okay with having to put up with bugs because there is a nice game underneath it all
This game reminds me of what happens when you mix Howl's Moving Castle, Myst, and Alice in Wonderland into a VR game. The art style if very unique and the world contains very interesting characters with a bit of mystery that winds up as having a very interesting and fun final boss fight. The game starts off really dry, but toward the end, it really ramps up and Chapter 9 was really a great level. In fact I would say that if all of the rest of the levels played like Chapter 9, the gameplay would have gone well beyond the 1.5 hours it took me to complete the game. I will be revisiting it here and there to collect the achievements, but the design over all was really good. They are currently testing locomotion movement, rather than the telportation system, for movement and I have to say that this has increased my fun with the game. Prior to the locmotion system, it would have just been "another teleporting game in an interesting world", but now feels like I am /in/ the world. Controls themselves worth fairly well, with each controller being a hand, but the teleportation system can cause issues depending on what you are doing and make held objects a bit hard to control if teleporting at the "wrong time." I do recommend the game if you enjoy puzzle games as the world is rich and some of the puzzles can get rough, but they are all pretty easy once you learn the "trick." I hope we get more Scoria as she was the best character in my opinion and I want to know more about her, let's do a prequel for her :)
I'm loving this game so far. It's one of my favorite VR experiences. Hence reviewing it before I'm even finished. I'll update if anything changes. First, I adore the music and sound direction. It's so beautiful and lush. And works so well with the art design. It's really what caught my attention first. Especially in one of the early chapters where I wandered around to find a voice I heard singing in the distance. The dialogue is silly and fun and well acted which pulls me into the characters. I graphics are great too and it's a nice combination of big and small. The grand views are beautiful but there's also always something small in the room that catches my eye. I have a rather beefy computer (1080ti) so I can't say how well optimized it is, but it runs great for me. I haven't had any noticable performance issues. The puzzles aren't too difficult so far but there's a really good mix of them. I adore some of the simple experiences like just making tea. But then, I'm biased because I love tea. But there are also trickier ones. It's interesting to see so many different types too. I wasn't expecting speed puzzles requiring me to run through a maze. For the puzzles, I really liked the way the main character monologues sometimes to give you hints. He talks about other things as well so it's not jarring. But it's nice to keep the game moving. Though it might be a bit too quick to give hints sometimes. I've gotten hints well before I've given up. Sometimes I was just distracted looking at the world. So if you're really looking for a challenging puzzle game, this might not be the best. I think this better for the story and the characters and the experience. I'm playing on Windows MR with the HP headset and it works great. No issues with the controls. My only issues is that there are some throwing puzzles and I've got a rather small play space with a low ceiling. So I have to be rather careful... Full disclosure: I backed this on Kickstarter. So I did pay for it but I've been following it for a while.
Chiaro and the Elixir of Life is a beautiful narrative adventure that glimpses to the real power of VR. The colorful art and "alive" characters (machines are also alive! everyone has a soul) make me want to keep knowing more and coming back to this world. There is a specific scene where I sat on the floor and watched the most delightful musical performance, I felt completely immersed. I wasn't playing a game about Neverain I WAS in Neverain. It is a funny feeling when you go from playing a VR game and looking around to actually occupying the space, being there. It doesn't happen that often to me anymore in VR, but playing Chiaro I had that feeling twice and I couldn't be happier. You might encounter some glitch or a not so perfect animation/interaction, but the game wins at making a consistent and believable world, and creating a story worth listening to. I am glad more adventure games are coming to the VR space, I was honestly missing it and I can't wait until we have a renaissance of the adventure genre, feel that spirit that came years ago with the Lucas Art games, be a pirate again in islands full of monkeys. And Chiaro is a great first step in this direction.
This is an enjoyable VR adventure that takes place in a beautiful world. You can tell the developers really put time into their creation. I recommend this and the play time is well worth the price.
