IS IT WORTH THE COST? Where to begin? I have been interested in the concept behind this game for some time and boy did it not disappoint! While the $10 price tag may seem like it is a bit much for a game like this I promise it is worth it (assuming you have another friend that will also pick it up to play with you). If you are one of those kids that plays chess every day there is no question you should have this game. If you are not and you don't have a friend to play with I would hold off for at least a sale to $5 because $5 would be a very reasonable price for this. VARYING GAMEPLAY Through playing, I have discovered there is way more to the game than I had thought there would be. There are elements that can change the way the game plays such as any pieces on a white tile will only move in horse patterns or you can not move on red tiles. There is an energy system you can use utilize to push your pawn form starting position to get a queen in one turn should you have 4 energy (and you gain 2 energy a turn). This is truly much more than just a game of chess. But you can totally set it to normal chess if you want to! HOW COMPLICATED IS THIS? One of the greatest downfalls of this game is it is designed it a way that it looks really complicated and for that reason many people who are interested will decide they don't need it. And it is kind of complicated. It does take 2 or 3 games to get the hang of strategy which yes there is strategy. You can account for moves ahead till even with all the added moves. Some may not realize things for a while such as the background feature hidden in the bottom right with very nice looking backgrounds. Features like health, energy, restrictions, and movement can be tough to learn especially if you are not proficient in chess. But my whole hearted advice is if you can get one friend to play this with you DO IT and you will have a fantastic time. REPLAYABLILITY There is a ton of replayability with all the varying types of games as it is. With more game modes to come, combine those with the potential combinations of restrictions. You could play this game every day and never get bored and it's just chess! BUGGY? GAME ISSUES? CHEAP? No. When playing you will think of things that you may be able to do and wonder if it was accounted for in the coding. Guess what? It was! For instance you can't just steam role a king with one sweep with stored energy despite your evil plot to do so. Once the king is in check, your piece is restricted from moving again. There is really nothing wrong with the game at it's current build, however I would recommend adding a couple features that really aren't necessary, but if were implemented would really put this game over the top. SUGGESTED FEATURES/MISSING FEATURES -When in Check, it would be useful to have the piece that has your king in check highlighted so you know where you are in check from. -One of the sides of the cube is clearly orange, but in the elements it is described as gold. -When you end a turn, it can easily be missed by the opponent what you did because they could be looking at the wrong side of the cube. A player tracking feature or a see what their last move was again option could be incorporated. -At the end of your turn, before you hit end turn, it would be useful to be able to click pieces from the opposing side and see how they can move. While you have energy you can observe how they can move, but when you run out it doesn't allow you to anymore saying something like "you are out of energy". This is arguably the most important time to see how your potential move will pan out though. -More music diversity -Add a win loss tracking system (can be simple, not asking for a leaderboards or anything) IN CONCLUSION 9.5//10 for it's genre. Tabletop Simulator can take a seat after this masterpiece. Add me as a friend if you want someone to play against. I have discord too :)
Chess Cubed is my personal game of september so far. I've been waiting for this game for 3 Months now, and it was worth the wait completly! Thanks for reading my review, I hope you liked it as much as I like Chess Cubed. 10/10
Okay, I play chess and I am considered a strong tournament player. This game is not chess, it is pieces smashing into each other I think. I don't understand the positive reviews -- there isn't anyone around to play, no instructions on what exactly is going on, endless turns or something, and no AI. If the developer put instructions out there for what it all means, and if people played it, then perhaps it might be okay. That said, the one time I got lucky & I did manage to play it with someone, it just bugged me and did not remind me at all of chess. I will go back to playing real chess and hope that someday this hot mess of a game gets fixed.
Chess Cubed is one of the most unique games of this year I have played so far. Default Software brings an interesting twist on the classic game of chess by combining it with the dimension and rotation of an 8 by 8 Rubiks Cube. Although the mass amounts of potential and complexity this game has to offer might deter an average (epic) gamer, the rulesets and variety make this an enthralling experience without becoming an endless nightmare. In short, I would highly recommend this game to any puzzle fan. I bought this game for myself and my friend who was initally skeptical about the absurdity of playing on six different planes. We are avid chess fans and his concern was that, by essentially adding five more boards to an already complex and time consuming game, the experience would become bogged down and uninteresting. However, upon playing for the first hour, we ended up recognizing the true potential of this game. The rules of the game remain the same as chess in many ways, but differ in a handful of ways, especially when certain gamemaodes are activated. One of the major changes from it's ancient predescesor is that moves require energy. Energy is regained by two per turn. The maximum amount of energy allowed to be stored is four. Pawns use one energy, all other pieces two, and rotations require one. This allows the potential to make multiple moves in one turn, which can increase the pacing and strategical coordination at the same time. The rules go on, but are best experienced in play oer time and experimenting with different gamemodes. The gamemodes my partner and I tested prior to this review included the following. Unlimited movetype allows for full range of motion for a piece within their original movement. Rooks can wrap around the entire cube in a straight line, pawns are still restricted to one-two spot movement, etc. Movetype 8 allows for movement up to eight units, much like the original game. Healthtype deplete takes away one health per turn when a king's in check, allowing for an endgame if the king remains in check for twelve turns. Elemental modifier creates different movetype rules depending on which face of the cube is active (ie. red side cannot have pieces on it, white side forces knight movement). Extra formation fills the third row with pawns. The list goes on, but all of these changes together make extremely unique and interesting gameplay maneuvers that I appreciate. Some of my complaints are practical, many are just small changes that could make the game a bit more approachable. A major issue my friend and I had was the fact the camera wouldn't follow piece movements after a turn was over. It created a bit of confusion when we tried to figue out what our opponent did. Adding in such a feature would be beneficial and could even have a toggle for those who would rather it stay as is. Also, the tabs to check settings, gamerules, and sides are a bit too sensitive and would benefit from having a delay after moving the pointer off of the tab. Minor issues include how the game refers the orange side as "Gold" which confused us for a brief moment. Also, facing the orange side directly in front of view would make the side look yellow due to the lighting casted on the surface. There's also a typo when checking the HP bar. It says "9: King "my" not leave His current side" and it should say "may". Otherwise, this game is extremely well made and blew my expectations away. I have to give this gamee an 8/10! More updates and fixes would surely land this game as one of my best games of the year.
Great for fans of puzzles and strategy games. 10/10
Short Version: It's Chess on a Rubix Cube, whats not to love about that concept? Long version: Pros: A game can be done in around 10ish Minutes quick to learn (hard to master) Has you thinking outside the box (Or cube in this case) Cons: Looks need to be improved Audio is ok No singleplayer Some moves your oppenents make can feel cheap sometimes. Little indication as to when it's your turn The more vauable pieces costs too much energy to be able to move. Despite its setbacks, i'd still recommend it for a casual play with friends.
Awesome game! If you're a true chess fan you will enjoy this game! There is no learning curve unless you don't know how to play chess but being the fact that you are playing on a Rubik's cube, as you can imagine this game can be quite complicated in a good way. It allows you to really strategize and think outside of the box. The number of moves at your disposal are almost endless or would take quite a while to calculate and I'm not up for the task lol. I've been following the development of this game for quite some time and it has revolutionized and modernized the game of chess. This game is even better when you have a close friend or family member to play with you. looks needs to be smoothed out but besides that I love it! I rate it 7/10
The devs essentially abandoned the game after release. No AI, nobody to play with, and the game mechanics are a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mess. This game had a lot of potential, but it seems to have been squandered by a dev team who quickly moved on to other things after a quick cash grab.
