Chess Infinity

If trying to decide between this game and Chess Ultra, choose Chess Ultra. It’s just better in almost every way. Which is mind boggling since the game is nearly a decade old. But somehow the graphics in Chess Ultra are just way more beautiful than Chess Infinity. Infinity has more locations to play at, but that’s doesn’t matter to me when I choose Woodburn Manor every time I play Chess Ultra anyway. Nothing in Infinity creates a better chess playing ambiance than Woodburn Manor does in Ultra. And the soundtrack in Ultra is also superior to Infinity. That’s not to say the soundtrack in this game is bad, I didn’t feel the need to turn the music off. But the soundtrack in Ultra I could listen to on repeat all day while playing chess. It’s perfect for the ambiance. But to make a long story short here is why I say Ripstone took a step back in this game compared to Chess Ultra. Chess Ultra looks more beautiful. Even just navigating the menu is preferred in Chess Ultra. All the AI avatars that you’re forced to look at in Chess Infinity give the game a cheap feeling in my opinion. Chess Infinity feels clunky when playing with a mouse. Moving the pieces is smooth with a mouse in Chess Ultra but they are totally clunky in this game. Chess Ultra lets you steam remote play with your friends (they don’t need to buy the game to play with you). This is big because I prefer playing games with my friends, and remote play makes this more economical. Chess Ultra offers VR support Chess Ultra doesn’t hog nearly as many cpu resources as this game Chess Ultra has a bunch of “Mate in 1” “Mate in 2” all the way to “Mate in 7” challenges. Chess infinity stripped all the Mate challenges except for “Mate in 1” But let’s say for some reason you’re still interested in Chess Infinity after reading all that. In that case I will share the one pro of this game over Ultra. The tactical overlay would definitely be helpful for beginners. It does a good job of showing how the opponents last move has created weaknesses in your defense. It’s nice that you can toggle it on and off without going into settings. Oh, and if you saw that Infinity offers guided feedback and thought that would be nice for learning, just know that feature is pretty bare bones. It’s nothing like the feedback you get from chess dot com for example. This game just tells you things like “good move” or “excellent move” but doesn’t give you any reasoning so you can understand why the move was good or not. TLDR: Skip this game unless you got money to burn and you think the tactical overlay feature is exactly what you need to help you casually get better at chess.

I don't know what it is about chess games that aren't Chess.com or Lichess. What is the difficulty in creating a simple ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ chess game? The reviews for this one is absolutely warranted. On the lowest settings, this one runs like reanimated ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. And forget trying to do anything cross platform. No concise or direct instructions on adding friends to play. Refund this ♥♥♥♥.

DO NOT BUY. Crashes. Perspective draw of game is not correct. Boards clash colors and patterns with many chess sets. Staunton chess set, the global standard, is not available until level 35. Why? Chess Ultra is far superior in every way. Update. Played another six hours looking for something positive to report. I cannot find anything.

This game crashes more than any other game I have ever played. It worked for about one month, and I liked it, but then NVIDIA released an updated graphics driver and after I installed it, this game wont load. The crash reporter also is not working as it will not let you report the crash to the epic games website (!) so any information my computer has gathered on the crash just stays on my computer.

Great single player vs. AI game. Visually stunning, nice locations and chess figures. But please check performance optimization since GPU load is always 100%, even on mid settings.

I really wanted to like this game. I wanted to love it actually. But it should have never left Beta. Explain to me how my rig can run Black Myth Wukong at full ultra graphics but now it struggles to play a chess game??? I tested on two computers. The desktop is Windows 11 desktop with an i9 cpu, 64gb of RAM, and a Radeon RX 9070 XT 16GB. It doesn't matter if I put the game on ultra settings, high, or medium, my computer heats up like an oven. Im not trying to kill my rig for a chess game. That's just utter insanity. My laptop is a Fedora KDE Plasma with an AMD Ryzen 7 6800H cpu, 64GB of RAM, and an integrated Radeon 680M. It plays DUNE Spice Wars (2023) at full graphics. But it can't handle a Chess game. It's even worse here, it stutters ... on a Chess game. Please optimize the game. Stop with the addons, and optimize the game. Now for the actual review, if you can get this to play without harming your computer, it's not as good as Learning Chess with Dr Wolf, a mobile chess game. The lessons in Chess Infinity are very low quality. They're not interactive. They don't show you what can go wrong, or show you why you made a mistake. It just tells you what to do. And each lesson is like a move or two. You can finish all the lessons in less than 20 minutes. Meanwhile the lessons on Learning Chess with Dr Wolf go on for weeks. On Dr Wolf, each lesson is an actual lesson, with a coach with an AI voice being immersive with you, speaking your name, guiding you through your mistakes, giving you options on how you want to review your mistakes, if you want to play the other side to see from the other perspective. And they go way beyond Intermediate, which is the limit on Chess Infinity. Chess Infinity does not go beyond intermediate. And honestly, intermediate on Chess Infinity is still beginner on Chess with Dr Wolf. I am being completely honest. Chess Infinity has lots of puzzles. But they are all super easy, until you get to Checkmate in 2 and Checkmate in 3 puzzles, which is the actual intermediate content in Chess Infinity. For the price Chess Infinity would be worth it, if it didn't make you think it was going to bake your GPU. Its a real shame. Please optimize the game. It's been out for over a year already. Optimize it. It is not fun rushing your game play, because you're scared one's expensive computer is going to get fried. Gaming is supposed to be fun. Chess is supposed to be relaxing. Chess Infinity as it is, is not fun. It is not relaxing. It is horrifying because one is scared the computer is going to go up in flames. My room actually smelled like burning wires. Fix this and have some self respect for your company.

Von den Schachprogrammen die ich bisher hier auf Steam kenne, ist Chess Infinity m. E. eines der besten. Ob es unglaublich spielstark, und für Kenner ausreichend herausfordernd ist, kann ich nicht beurteilen, da ich selbst nur ein Hobby-Spieler bin. Allerdings bietet es viele Modi, Features und Abwechslung und ist daher für ein kurzweiliges Spiel nach Feierabend oder Zwischendurch bestens geeignet. Kurz: Es macht Spaß! (Es läuft auch mit entsprechenden niedrigeren Einstellungen prima auf meinem Steam Deck OLED).

Several caveats here folks. Listen up, this is important. First the [b]good[/b] : 1. It is a beautiful game. I found as of this date, the mouse/user interface was pretty usable. It certainly seemingly is more intuitive than Chess Ultra. 2. It has atmosphere, I think. If you would like a chess game to relax, this and Chess Ultra aren't that bad. Considering the cost at present, about 13 euro. 2 cheap six packs of lager from LIDL. Now the [b]bad[/b]: 1. It is a resource hog, but sure, you want eye candy, this is the price you'd have to pay I guess, this day and age. I'm running this on a ryzen 5 with 16 gigs of ram and a mid to low tier gfx card. It just about works fine. [b]Note[/b]: It will also run on an ryzen lappy with 16gigs of ram with integrated graphics but think of the worst possible graphics experience you could have and still be [i]just[/i] about able to input moves. It is not nice nor pleasant but possible. I personally wish that they could have implemented a scaled down bare bones, basic 3D mode that even a cheap laptop of this day and age could handle. 2. Thus, you're only buying this if you want the eye-candy and want a break from chess.com or lichess. It's never going to replace those two. For anything serious. Chess Infinity is for relaxing. And maybe low-stress premade games with friends because.... 3. Getting online games? Go play on chess.com/lichess. The [b]meh...[/b] : 1. Want a computer analysis of your game? You can. But not here. Fortunately, exporting the PGN is possible after the game ends and you can naturally take that file and plug it into stockfish or fritz or whatever. I don't think this is major issue because of the slant of the game? It's not meant to be Fritz or Chessbase etc. 2. Staunton pieces IMO should be the default, but I can see why they did not do that. To get you to invest time unlocking them. Most of the other pieces are meh... I'd like to see more variety of playable pieces here. About the only other sets that are kind of playable are the Gallery (starter). Even then, it can be difficult to distinguish the black pieces from the white because the colour scheme is light and dark shades of brown that are quite close, depending on the lighting. 3. They could have put in more additional content like more pieces, more puzzles, maybe even 960. [b]My wish list:[/b] 1. Ripstone partners up with chess.com / lichess and allow this to be used as a client for those game servers. As I may have mentioned somewhere else. Chess.com wins, Ripstone wins, we win. 2. 960 3. A more resource frugal laptop friendly but still aesthetically pleasing 3D chess program. 4. Offline play made clearly available as a choice. Would I buy it again? [b]Absolutely[/b]. I like Chess, this is a beautiful game despite its flaws. If you have the resources, go for it bearing in mind my experience above. But you DON'T have to. Chess.com or just lichess is absolutely perfectly fine. This game is clearly a nice to have but not a must-have.
