The whole game is absolutely gorgeous. The one thing I have a bit of a nit pick is that I wish that the character portraits had more reactions to what was happening, having them be just the single face didn't do much when it comes to more serious aspects of the game. Otherwise I think the backgrounds are amazing and kuddos to the people who created them. One thing I forgot to mention. I wish this game would tone it down with the flashes, I went to the options to disable it but it just replaced the white flashes with grey flashes. ---{ Gameplay }--- ☐ Very good ☑ Good ☐ It's just gameplay ☐ Mehh ☐ Watch paint dry instead ☐ Just don't The gameplay is one of the focus points of this game but also one that disservices it the most. The combat is incredibly deep and somewhat varied. It features a party swap system that I'd never seen before and makes your whole party very dynamic. However, the issue is that the enemies are way too difficult. They're very spongy and take way too long to take down. Sometimes even knocking out one of your party members in a single turn. I had to turn the difficulty down to go past some enemies and I honestly kept it in easy just to enjoy the story. If this team makes a new game I would recommend making the enemies easier and the bosses harder. A lot of the time the enemies were extremely more difficult than the bosses themselves. I liked how your characters gain levels via GS, while it's ok, it really had me focus on HP due to the enemies being difficult. The shard system is a good idea that even though it works, it was way too bothersome to have me, as a player, deal with it whenever I got a new party member or a new weapon. Simplify it or get rid of it altogether for the next game. I also wish that the skill menu was scrollable so I could have more than 6 skills per character. But it was fine honestly. I mostly kept a healer at all times in my party spamming AOE heals. The sky armor sections are fun honestly. I really like their combat mechanics with the gear system. I think that the way the gear upgrades is fine, however a lot of the times I felt like it was a waste of money because I'd find better gear than my currently upgraded gear and replace it. Так и не осилил эту игру. Слишком низкого качества тут оказались почти все элементы. Просто элементарно было скучно и нагоняло сон. А уж левелдизайн и буквальные дыры в сюжете вообще вызывали испанский стыд. В игре плохо все, кроме музыки. Унылая боевка, что героями, что на роботах. Муторный и долгий крафт и работа с экипировкой. Прокачка, не дающая чувства новизны. Сюжет с обилием дыр в событиях. Отвратный левелдизайн с этими опостылевшими «There is wrong way». Вынужденное многократное посещение старых локаций. Donner mon avis sur Chained Echoes dépend par quel bout je le prends. Comme un jeu indépendant fait par une seule personne (ou presque) ? Alors oui, c'est une franche réussite. Comme un JRPG analysé hors de son contexte de développement ? Le résultat reste globalement solide, sauf qu'on ressent pas mal le côté "amateur" quand on gratte... [h3]Système de combat[/h3] Le système de combat fonctionne bien, c'est classique et on peut faire des combos sympas entre persos. La "synergie" qui se veut la signature du jeu m'a cependant déçu, je m'attendais à un truc beaucoup plus poussé. C'est une simple "jauge de rage" qui n'apporte fondamentalement pas grand chose au gameplay, si ce n'est l'incitation notamment à changer de persos pendant le combat et donc de profiter de tout le roster. Très peu de compétences liées à la synergie existent, et lorsque c'est le cas, elles ne servent qu'à diminuer ou à augmenter la jauge. [h3]Game design[/h3] J'ai souvent été frustré par certains choix de game design qui, à mon sens, trahissent justement le côté amateur du projet. Par exemple, à partir d'un moment, le level design passe sur un "système à 3 couches" (pour ne pas spoil) sauf que très souvent de grosses incohérences de mapping surgissent. Certaines règles établies changent parfois arbitrairement afin d'éviter de "cheese" la map ou certains trash mobs. Clairement un des points qui m'a le plus frustré concernant l'exploration. Enfin, le système de cristaux à incruster dans les armes est classique sur le fond (on retrouve beaucoup de ça dans les jeux sur navigateur) sauf qu'ici c'est une usine à gaz. J'ai personnellement lâché l'affaire au bout d'un moment. Quant aux améliorations d'armes et armures, c'est complètement inutile dans la mesure où on en trouve de nouvelles toutes les 20 minutes. Cependant, gros big up pour la phase de la mine avec le chariot, c'était un concept très inspiré qui aurait mérité d'être davantage exploité dans le jeu. [h3]Intérêt[/h3] On le compare souvent à Sea of Stars en le plaçant au-dessus, mais je trouve personnellement ce dernier mieux maîtrisé (plus "pro", plus de bouteille et d'expérience au niveau de la direction artistique et du game design à mon sens). Le jeu est loué pour son scénario mais j'ai trouvé qu'il se décousait à un rythme effréné au fur et à mesure de l'intrigue. A partir de la fin de l'acte 2 notamment, la narration abandonne sa dimension politique et s'enfonce dans des thèmes archétypaux, parfois présentés avec plus de gravité que de véritable profondeur. Les dialogues manquent cruellement de naturel, on est vraiment dans le syndrome des personnages qui disent des trucs afin que le joueur ait du contexte, sauf que c'est super bizarre car normalement ils n'auraient aucune raison de les dire. Un lead writer aurait été plus que bienvenu, car pour moi ça a été une souffrance sur toute la seconde moitié du jeu. [h3]Verdict[/h3] Alors oui je juge peut-être durement le jeu si on considère qu'il est l'œuvre d'une seule personne. Mais ce ne sont que des points subjectifs de ma part, car j'ai passé un très bon moment sur ce Chained Echoes. Je l'ai platiné et je suis en train de faire le DLC, preuve en est qu'il m'a beaucoup plu. Chained Echoes est donc un jeu sympa que je recommande, même s'il reste malgré tout très classique, traînant parfois en longueur et designé bizarrement.
Chained Echoes has a solid foundation but there are some ugly and confusing design decisions that make it hard to stick with for me. First, the art is really hit or miss. Most of the art of the game is fantastic, but the portraits are hideous. The sprites for bald people also make their heads look GIGANTIC, like huge fleshy light bulbs. I was genuinely confused for a while if they were supposed to be bald or wearing helmets. The attack animations are recycled over and over. Also, the grass in the first area looks like impacted hairs coming out of a pore in the ground. It distressed me to look at. Other reviews have mentioned that there is no visual indicator for any status effect, requiring you to actively open a sub menu to see who has what status whether a buff or poison or whatever. There are also other UX choices that are baffling. To fast travel, you hit the region map button to look at the map. Despite seeing the fast travel points of the region on the map, you must then hit the "fast travel list" button which then opens the WORLD map and displays a list of regions that are in a random order. The cursor always defaults at the top of the list, regardless of which region you are currently in. Then you select the region you want, even if it's the one you are in, and it then brings up the same region map but this time you actually can actually select the fast travel points. Another example is the obtuse crystal upgrade system. You collect crystals that you can combine for greater effects and slot them into weapons and armor. But the actual UX around this is incredibly clunky. Putting a crystal in a weapon is a different menu than putting a crystal in armor, and both are separate from removing all crystals from a weapon which is also separate from removing all crystals from armor. It just requires a lot of unnecessary back and forth. Additionally, you start to accumulate trash crystals and, at least so far, there is no way to sell or scrap them. So I now have a bunch of trash crystals that I can't even upgrade any further just making the menu navigation even more frustrating. The story is also bleh. Not bad, but very little expounding on anything. Characters just kinda state things and then move on with no explanation to each other or the player. Also, Robb sucks and I'm sure he has a redemption later but when even the characters of the party are openly complaining about having him around that doesn't exactly make me happy he's around either. He sucks in such a forced/poorly written way, where he takes the worst possible interpretation of everything anyone says.
The overdrive system is possibly the [b]worst[/b] mechanic I've ever seen in an otherwise well made game. In short, the overdrive system is a heat system where you want to not be too cold, and also not be too hot. Doing almost ANYTHING heats you up, and only 1 thing cools you down -- Whatever the hell the game randomly decided is going to cool you down for this turn. Despite the rest of the stuff I've encountered in the game so far being quite nice, this one mechanic is just killing it for me. A completely arbitrary restriction on what skills and abilities you can use on any given turn is just... why? Need to heal up before a big enemy AoE, but the overdrive gauge says you need to attack instead? "lmao, you die" Spent your last few turns buffing your damage, debuffing enemy resistance, and preparing for a massive hit? Whoops, the overdrive gauge wants you to heal, maybe next time in 17 turns it will line up properly. It's just so un-fun to me, I'm not sure I can stomach playing any more of this game. NEXT-DAY UPDATE: I'm continuing to play this game after utilizing cheat engine to lock the overdrive gauge at 50%, and it's much more enjoyable for me now. I'm not sure if I should change my recommendation based on using this third-party tool... I'll think about it.

Puh, this is sad. It started out really interesting. The political plot reminiscent of FF Tactics was really intriguing. The combat system was really fun and as you got new skills and class emblems it became even more fun. But then it became really tedious. Overall, I can totally see how some people might enjoy the ~50 hours repetitive gameplay this can offer. But not me. There are too many issues and each small issue just keeps adding up until it culminates in the experience shifting into the negative. I decided to edit in that I did enjoy the game a lot for close to 20 hours despite everything and did all side content and had fun. I just can't do another 30 hours of it. As I've said - too many issues piled up and the game broke under their weight (for me - I quit in Shambala after the revelations about monsters). Here are my issues with the combat system: It is tedious, slow and repetitive from rather early on. I keep using the same limited amount of skills for every enemy and every boss. And learning new skills from class emblems with the sparse SP you get is also really annoying and tedious yet again. Everything just takes too long and with bigger enemy groups, you can sometimes just run into ♥♥♥♥ rng and get a different experience in terms of difficulty depending on whether the enemy focuses one party member or spreads its damage. And then there are the other mechanics surrounding combat that just don't work well. Like you gather crystals here and there and combine them to form higher level crystals to slot into gear. That's not bad. That's actually pretty cool. What ruins it though is that there are too many crystals that simply are just there to bother you and not let you get the ones you want. Like every element has a resistance crystal - but unless you know beforehand what elements you're gonna go up against AND you want to re-equip this every time, they are pointless. You have crystals for every armor and weapon type and they all do exactly the same. There is just an obvious way to reduce grind and streamline this and it wasn't done. Beyond that, when combining or slotting, you can't switch from piece to piece. You have to take them out manually and combine them then and insert them back again. You can't just keep it equipped and bolster it or even change it. The menu is just awful and just adds to tedium. It got so bad that I didn't even bother upgrading to new gear at times because I didn't want to sit there, take out and replace and re-combine yada yada the dozens of crystals I've gathered and socketed. It's just yet another cool idea that was badly implemented. Just like the Mechs - you have a few and then you have weapons of different tiers and then every mech can equip every weapon which also have tiers and then also skills you can slowly unlock by using the mech and the gear. And it's just so convoluted because in order to unlock new stuff at a reasonable place you have to worsen your characters with worse equipment just to get new skills. It's just not thought out at all. Like why not just stick to SP and let mechs assign SP to whatever weapon you'd like? then you have this reward board that replaces level grinding as there are no real levels, just grimoire shards you use to unlock passives, skill boosts and skills. The reward board itself sometimes just has stupidly random things it wants from you and you have to re-visit every single area and comb through it all over again when you want to complete it (and here you get a ton of those GS to level up so you kinda need to do that). Just more tedium. And the GS levels are also uninteresting. Here's +2 Attack or +10% attack as a passive but only for your base attack so the actual change is +4 attack IF you equip it. Many skills aren't useful with a few obvious standout skills. There are multiple optional party members and they're unsurprisingly super flat and so is the main cast for the most part as well. Just too many people with too little to say. And every one of them (just like many story beats) just remind you of another game. In the beginning I thought 'cool, a homage to a JRPG I liked!', 1/3rd through the game I thought 'is there actually an original thought here?!'. And the story is just... boy. I'll put it into spoilers but it just kept getting worse and worse until I quit on Shambala because I just lost interest and thought there is no way you can somehow turn this into a good story by the end. And judging from the AI summary I got, it really only gets worse. This is another of those instances where it shows there was just one guy working on this and no editor or anyone at any point saying 'dude, you have not thought this through, this doesn't work well, we should simplify or streamline this convolution'. Just an unmitigated and diluted mess of things. So, the story beats that one after another really turned me off: [spoiler] - Kiiliyan talking about his sisters getting gangraped by half a ghetto and him being mad at 'checks notes' systemic issues that forced these poor people to violently gangrape his sister. Okay dude. - Captain Cuck (Kiliyan) gets a stupid betrayer arc but he means well but then he needs control and power but then there is redemption when he gets 'checks notes' all powerful by the end as the main character sacrifices himself for it because he understand the most obvious thing ever suddenly. Oh wow. - The church creates monsters artificially to frighten humans for control and spread them on earth via dropships. Youknow, because CENTURIES OF WAR are not as scary as a fly with boxing gloves. - the church, originally an order to keep the great and unexplained super evil evil thing sealed, now wants to eradicate humans and ascend beyond them with the help of super evil thing because humanity has fallen too far from god or something and can only be saved by destruction. - Glenn and Lenne - with the dumbest names in gaming history for a pair btw - are reincarnated souls and something something fate vs free will but really poorly written and also Glenn is basically Cecil from FF IV because that's his arc (other than the 1/3rd taken straight from Cloud in FF VII). - entire world is weirdly set in middle ages style but there is also advanced gene scientists and mechs but no other technology is somehow in everyday life. It's just badly thought out. - the entire political intrigue etc. gets thrown out the window and replaced with some cosmic mythological reincarnation mumbo-jumbo that feels like a really stupid shift and pointless escalation of a much better story. It's like Frankenstein's monster with two brains and neither works. [/spoiler]
