Cave story is a very solid game with some deeply annoying issues in its design that mean I probably won't be 100%ing the game anytime soon. Despite this it's still a classic with a fun story, good music, a cute style to it, and altogether it remains worth playing through; it's not a very long game anyways, and if any of the issues are a dealbreaker for anyone, the game's free and you can play the freeware version. These issues mostly stem from a lack of being able to save over other slots; there are a lot of things in the game that you can permanently lock yourself out of by doing something that would otherwise be very reasonable to do. On one hand, I'm not a fan of using guides and think that content being missable is fine, but on the other hand, there are some choices made in the missable content that feel like they *were* intended to be seen, which makes the lack of clear pointers and permanent lockouts all the more frustrating. As for the spoilers,
having a tough final gauntlet without save points is fine in and of itself, but making it this easily, and permanently missable (multiple save slots would've saved this, but alas, i cannot recommend going for it without a guide) and putting permanent headache-inducing screenshake throughout all if it absolutely kills any motivation I have to get the true ending. If anything, I'll probably do it on the freeware version if I can mod the screenshake out.
Je ne peux pas recommander ce jeu. Je l'aime mais la jouabilité est énervante. Le personnage glisse un peu et les sauts sont approximatifs.
as of the latest beta it received parity w the nintendo switch version of the game. IT IS NOW 11/10 PLEASE PLAY THIS GAME IT HAS ALL THE QOL CHANGES FROM SWITCH UPDATE: I ended up beating the game with 0 life capsules on Hard difficulty, I BUSTED ALL OVER THE SCREEN
I wish I played the freeware version first years ago this is literally peak. it's short but the gameplay is great, the storytelling is masterful and emotional, the music and it's remakes go so hard despite the developer's lack of musical background, the character designs are so adorable and memorable, and it all might stick with you for a long while. it's a shame then that this ancient gem saw minimal discussion lately, even now after it's first update in over a decade. you just have to play cave story in any way you can soon, it's never too late to enjoy perfection. although, some people are complaining about extreme lag playing on this port after it's long awaited update went out of beta. I play on linux with a 4K monitor running this on proton hotfix (it isn't natively on linux anymore, yet) and this game mostly runs like a charm for me, so your mileage may vary. if it runs like ass for you, just get dokutsu-rs instead which is a similarly good remaster and it's free, you can easily find it on cavestory.one.
a metroidvania classic and must play. not perfect, but fun & unique. play the freeware version, too!
Good enough that I own 3 copies and the free version
