[/olist]
This one is so mixed for me. I really like the ideas and puzzles in the Fez esq adventure, but the bad enemy and boss designs are just horrible. The writing is uninspired and insta deaths feel bad. It is a big achievement releasing a game as a solo developer, but ultimately this game was just a boring slog to get through.
I love this game. Interesting mechanics, I'm having a lot of fun.
Very nice 2d Zelda-like, but with more focus on puzzles. And it's actually 3d. Not sure what the purpose of these Game Boy aesthetics is though. I think the game would look much better with normal colours.
Objectively:
8/10
Great Zelda-like + Fez combo that turned into a pretty rememorable experience. The dialogue and characters have charm and I even got teary eyed over some scenes. The puzzles were fairly well designed and in some cases had multiple solutions that rewarded creativity. Also there is a surprising amount of optional content (still trying to figure out what a few of the key-items are for) that had me playing past the credits just to discover more of the quirky world that Cassette Boy offers. The combat is 'fine' but probably the weakest thing about the game for me, it does add to the experience tho (in a positive way) just not as much as I would have liked. Enemy variety is pretty solid tho, and bosses capture those Zelda-like puzzle moments pretty well- Also figuring out how to engage various enemies was unique on average and engaging. I didn't need to look up any guides or anything to complete the game and the pacing felt pretty great- it was a little confusing on where to go towards the end but thankfully I was invested enough in the characters to check up on them between chapters. If you have an itch for old school classic Zelda then this is a must play
I loved the game! It's old fashioned both in the aestethic and the way it is played! The puzzle are engaging! Another thing I found really interesting are both the game mechanics and the philosophy behind them! 20hrs well spent!
