Quality top down Zelda inspired game featuring a cute little pet friend. Not quite as big in scope (only seven dungeons and a small over world that doesn't extend much past the town) but there's plenty packed into that small space, including one fairly long optional area (alongside some shorter optional areas). The dungeons themselves are good featuring an intuitive layout, solid (generally on the easy side) puzzles, and bosses that aren't too rough but generally harder and a bit more involved than your usual top down Zelda boss. Music is fairly catchy but has a short loop, so it can be a bit on the repetitive side. Simple story with some charming characters that you can interact with between dungeons that might have a small side quest or mini game to complete but are easy to ignore if you just want to progress the plot. Dev is very responsive and helpful, so if you're looking to scratch that top down Zelda itch look no further.
I'd say this game is good and has potential to be great if certain things get fixed in the future. If you can look past some minor bugs / glitches that might happen while you play, it's a decent game. Enjoyed: - Gameplay is solid, simple yet effective, feels good to move around and hitting enemies. - Sword attack is not a stab move - thank you so much for that. - Character creation is simple yet very cute for a simple game like this. - The little portraits of envrioment and objects give a nice flare to cutscenes and dialog. - Bosses have decent ways to be defeated, but require a few tries sometimes - You can pet your dog. -
The battle in the town was very creative and fun way to see if you know your way around it.
Nitpicks: - The game is mostly hard at the start due low health pool, 3 hits and dead, no half hearts or anything of sorts. - Seen a few different enemy designs, but most of them die with your sword alone. - Some of the music has been just the same theme, but with a slight variation, it could have been ok if the loop wasn't so short... the dungeons can take a bit of time to get through so hearing a 10 sec loop isn't really nice... - Some puzzles have a right way to be solved and doing it another way might cause you to get stuck and have to re-load your save (thankfully you just start at the entrance) - Pet AI will just ram spiky enemies killing itself, then makes me feel horrible, my poor boy. Yes, you can change to passive but i think it could at least not do that lol. - The game kept starting in window mode and changing controller settings isn't very intuitive. - You cannot pet the dog. But anyways, I liked it, especially after looking at the credits and noticing only a few people worked on it, Good Job! Ain't easy to make a game. Thank you!
Very charming adventure game, inspired by the early Zelda games. You have to save the people of Hatchwell from some evil force that spawns monsters all over the place, by finding six crystals in mysterious dungeons. Most of these dungeons are very well designed, with plenty of puzzles and unique enemies and bosses. Especially the water dungeon is amazing, and comes very close to the clever design of the Zelda games. The inhabitants of Hatchwell will also give you quests, and there are lots of secrets to find by exploring the environment. Not everything is perfect tho; the last two dungeons are repetitive and the music sounds best when turned off completely. But for the first game of a single developer, Hatchwell is a great achievement. Recommended!
A fun little zelda-like, very charming. Love how you can have an animal companion.
Review after some main dungeons (From non-native English speakers, peace :V). *Steam record time may not be accurate to actual gameplay length time, since everyone plays differently (I share the game with my sibling). What I like (Nice little things): *Some customization of player character (Legend of pet & myself ;) ). *Selectable pet system ("Activate" auto collect mode within limit, can expand more, with
pooping
everywhere as result). *Dungeons similar to earlier Z*lda style, such as the action adventure genre (simply kick a** with some puzzles, and always get stuck in every dungeon). *Some nice exploration too (Start with the amazing of rolling simulator). *Very cute & unique 2D art style (Totally free of 3D motion sickness, me almost want to puke after 5 minutes in any 3D games :'( ). Neutral (Hmm): *Bugs and Glitches that bundle with nowadays games (Forever free of charges). However, the devs are willing to fix them, and they are always active in Steam community (Thumbs up). *Side quests can easily "miss out" after some playtime. Maybe next time a warning before hand? Or side quest reappears later? (I want to collect more green thingy) *Some items can't be purchased after certain time (Such as
bomb & escape rope
, which may prevent some "way" to continue explore). What I hope/wish for future project/big changes/sequel etc (Ohhhh): *Pet system include enemies (I want those red slime). *Maybe more main dungeons (But this is difficult to plan & create). *More side quests (Nice distraction from main quest). *Journal for listing main quest and side quest for player to refer (Always losing memory after each dungeon). Enough said, I do recommend this game for player who like the combination of some action and puzzle. At least I am satisfied with the earlier discount purchased (Thank you for reading/scrolling :) ).
Cute as heck. Don't forget to water your plants.
Unfortunately, this game is unbelievably bad for me. The only pros it has seems to be the cute pets available and how you can play with them. Once you try to progress the story, all the bad design choice are out: - Retro Zelda-like attack, including the very short range and limited direction. Short range still alright, but the direction issue is just annoying. It means that enemy can and will easily go to a specific angle that you cant hit them without getting hit by them first. - Some enemies are also designed to be outright annoying - you cant kill them with the normal attack, then using whatever that can kill them will make them running around very fast while you have barely anyway to dodge it. - The control is counterintuitive. Yes, you can set your own control, the problem is, some of them are paired. The attack button and the confirm button are unexpectedly together and is actually the traditionally jump button - while the attack button of most game is a roll. So be expected to roll into enemy again and again. The menu button is actually ... the R trigger... - The boss has a really bad hit box. Basically, you will get hit way before your sprite even touch the boss sprite, and this is just on the side view. if you're behind the boss there's absolutely no way to know. - The guidance in various part is horribly done. Is the thing safe to touch? Never know. If you can push it? Can't really tell. Can you cut it? Can try but you might be hurt. - Combining the last two, the boss fight is a chore. I spent forever trying to attack the boss confusing why the hell the boss has so many HP, only to realise that I was meant to do something else. There's ABSOLUTELY no way to tell that you're "attacking wrong", especially since the boss DID respond to your attack. - Then, as bad as the boss is, at least, you can attempt it quickly right? NOPE. Sorry, you respawn right outside the dungeon. Feel free to walk back to the boss again with enemy respawning on the way so you might get hurt approaching the boss again. - Speaking of enemies respawning, enemies CAN and WILL respawn on you directly scoring some free hit. - Some of the puzzles, like those puzzle that can hurt you, can actually lock you in a position that you need to get hurt to leave and reattempt or even die. - Also, buying items from the shop is more or less a guessing game. There's no info on what they do, how to use it etc, UNTIL you buy it and check it in your inventory. Even so, certain item has no info on how to use it, and what will happen after you use it on certain spot. So many blind guesses needed. All in all, I wish this is a game for me since I still play retro game a lot (or even actual old game), but unfortunately it's very hard for me to push on or progress the game. If you have a lot of free time, sure, you can waste some hours in it. For working class like us with limited holiday and not much time to spend, I will suggest you go for something better.
An excellent zeldalike. The overworld map is small but dense (seriously, two dungeons back to back are one screen over from each other) but I think it works as this game truly focuses on just one town. After every dungeon you beat the day advances, and the delightful cast of characters has new things to say and new things for you to do for them, which is a nice way to give a sense of progression and give depth to the characters and make you care about them. The overall story is pretty generic but the characters make it. The dungeons are expertly designed, not being too linear but still with a solid sense of direction, making them satisfying to explore, and the puzzles are fun without being overly obscure (or if they are, there's a sign or hint flower to help explain them just enough so you know the rules of the puzzle but not the answer). And even though it's kind of dumb (walking into walls and such), the pet that follows you around and fights for you is a great addition. Some quests are missable, so make sure you walk around and talk to every NPC before moving on to the next dungeon. (Also, you have to wait to give Nada the heal flower, don't worry if you can't get it immediately).
