If you have a high tolerance to frustration then you can pretty much ignore this review. There's some bad art and some cringe-worthy voice acting but otherwise it's an interesting game where the Dungeon is a player in the game and it can change and add enemies to suit itself. However if endless clicking on confirmation dialogs whilst you replay the same level - hoping to not get screwed by the random number generator - is not your thing you might want to read on. First let's look at what should been obviously left out. Seriously, stuff that's been added to the game that makes it worse. Confirmations for everything. Why does the game world disappear to be replaced by a (terribly drawn) picture of the character whose turn is about to start? Why must I confirm that their turn is about to start? Many, many party based RPGs and squad based games have come and gone without the need to acknowledge the start of every single party member's turn. Similarly for confimations of the end of the turn. If there is nothing left to do then is it really necessary to ask if I really mean to end the turn. Further why do I have to end the turn at all if there's nothing left to do in the turn. Move to the next character in sequence like in every RPG ever. It may seem odd that I'm picking on something so seemingly trivial as a few extra mouse clicks but there is a bit more to it than that. Restarting levels is a slow affair as they don't restart from the point of action. All cinematics and pre-play character banter have to be watched again too. Skipping cinematics is odd as the mouse must be held down to grow a ball before the cinematic can be skipped. Skipping the character banter is downright irritating as there is no 'skip all' option and input seems to be ignored for a small time after every mouse click. I did not enjoy re-reading the same inane dialogue again and again. Which brings me to my next point. The voice acting is bad. The recording is low quality and the delivery is even worse. You're not going to be wanting to hear it ever time a stage starts. And speaking of stage restarts: why do I have to roll the dice at the start of each turn? Rolling the dice is an action that always happens but it is slow and shouldn't need to be presented to the player. I, sort of, understand it in Tavern Mode as it suits the feel of a tavern but for Dungeon Mode - which is the game default - it doesn't make sense. Cameras and room manipulation buttons. The buttons to manipulate a room; i.e: rotate it or swap it, appear on the edges of the room. The camera pans to the room that the mouse is currently over (there is no other way of panning). Think about that for a moment. If you move the mouse into an adjacent room whilst trying to hit a button on the edge of another room then the whole map will scroll and the wrong rooms buttons will be selected. Why does moving the mouse into a room focus on that room at all? What was wrong with decades of games that have allowed the player to manually pan the map? Why are none of the buttons or keys rebindable? What was the reason for rotating the map up and down at all? Why can't I use shortcut keys to select the dice? Living Dungeon really does not feel like it was made to be played with a mouse and keyboard. The implementation is awful. Generally the 3D models in Living Dungeon are good and show adequate detail in high resolutions (HD and above). The 2D art is another story. I mentioned it was terrible at the start of this review. It is, even at middling resolutions. It's amateur and looks like it was drawn by someone who was just starting to learn about layers and transparency in photoshop. The game would be better off if there was the option to just turn it all off completely, it's not needed. Actually it's what pushed me intro writing this review. Having to stare at jaggy badly cutout poorly drawn character art whilst waiting for the turn confirmation screen to finally accept my confirmation click was, I found, more irritating than I could deal with. Lastly the randomness of throws seems to swamp any skill based play; be prepared to replay levels. I'm done. Play Space Hulk instead.
This is actually a really well done board game. note i said board game. if your not into board games you may want to pass on this as it may seem slow because each character and the dungeon go through turns. STORY MODE most missions are more like a puzzle rather than actually playing against the dungeon but its more for teaching you how to play so i'll forgive this but there is no real replay value here once you complete it. LOCAL CO-OP is what you'll want to play. if your not doing online. this lets X people all play on the same pc and don't worry there is nothing that needed to be hidden so no need to hide the monitor during turns. EXIT mode if your doing single player. here you can have up to 9 human or AI. players, note the dungeon is one of these and you can have a human or ai controlling it also the other 8 players (1 character each) can all be on the same team if they wish. GAME BASICS you start your turn rolling your dice and depending on what comes up is what you can do that turn. there are various dice that do different things based on what you pick at the start and based on your character. some of the things on the dice are sword (do 1 damage to an adjacent character), bow (do 1 damage to a line of sight character), foot (move 1 space), jump (move upto 2 spaces), dodge (switch places with a character in an adjacent space), circle (adds a reroll), card (gives you a new card) and ones that let you flip or rotate a dungeon tile. the dungeon also has its own dice that i wont get into. most characters have 1 or 2 hp with only the darkness needing 3 hits+a reroll token to kill it but your rarely ever forced to kill one. your gives X rerolls per turn (you can set this) and there are cards that effect game play. there are also many setting for victory like get to X space, kill Y character, ect. to win any you need to be aware of your surroundings and dungeon layout. the only complaints i can see are that its slow paced (being more board game like this is tolerable), the camera resting all the time, the spaces between the tavern boards (this is just my ocd and i'm not sure if they are this way doto the flip/rotate mechanic but it just bothers me they are not closer to each other), and game play it rather simple (characters having only 1-2hp, with no weapon, or ability upgrades though missions are over fast and there isn't much carry over from game to game). i do like it but on that note i do admit its not for everyone and best if you can get friends to play with. watch videos and decide if its for you. this would actually be a great game if you play board games in real life and did this game instead of a real life board game as they could all gather round the pc. p.s.let me say letting you put your character on AI as you walk away is a revaluation idea and more games of this like should use it.
This could be fun. This has great basic ideas. But then you get to play it and it just is such a slow interface. Each turn you have to reposition the camera as the system does not remember your camera position. Each turn is giving you a pause screen. And that is per character. AI calculations for such a small board should not even be noticeable yet they take time and slow down the game flow. This could be great and if you do not mind a very slow pace it might be for you. It wasn't for me and I can not recommend it as is.
The Living Dungeon is a really impressive debut title from indie developers Radiation Burn. It uses the core elements of table-top gaming by being turn based, reliant on the outcome of a set of 6-sided dice, and has scenery you can flip or rotate in order to escape a dungeon or kill an enemy. Pros Single player over 25 hours Steam Trading cards Local multiplayer with up to 9 friends Unique gameplay Cons A bit rough on the edges
It's a quite interesting puzzle game. You need to think and try many times to find the solutions of the problems. You should find a rotate in order to escape a dungeon or kill an enemy. Although the tutorial game mechanics are not friendly. I think it's still a nice game.
I really like the concept and i recommend it for people that like board game styled video games or dungeon crawlers that involved a bit of strategy--however my only gripes are with the terrible sound (which is understandable with indie games), but it is not really difficult to find a proper vocal booth or something that allows you to compress and EQ the voice in the manner it is needed. Some of the voice acting is bad, but has its own charm to the game and the AI doesn't seem all that perfected. I would love to see it continue to grow and improve.
I had to change my review. First I wanted to say THIS DEV TEAM IS AWESOME!!!!.. I had some slight technical issues with the game and I felt the pricing was to high. I got a message from one of the devs by the name of zenorf, he explained to me a bit more on how the camera worked in the game. The game is no longer over priced. It use to be 19.99 now it's only 12.99, I think that's a great price for this game. When I play the game in Tavern mode there is some blur on the lower part of the screen which makes it hard to view your pieces and the game dice, I was told by zenorf he would look into a toggle for it, so we can turn it off or on. The camera controls gave me some problems at first, but that was do to my lack of understand all the controls for it, zenorf explained to me that a simple middle mouse click on my character zooms in on them, allowing me to move around the board much better. Zooming in on your character also makes the blur far less of a hassle. I highly recommend this game for anyone who loves board games, table top rpgs, working with friends or screwing them over for some laughs. It's a lot of fun playing online or offline with friends. If you're a solo player you can play that way too, so no matter how you like to play your tabletop the devs have a way for you to do it. The game itself is simple to learn but it can be a real test of strategy too. It's easily one of my favorite games right now. P.S. some Gamers are upset that the game didn't originally have online multiplayer, but that was never an issue with me. I knew the game was going to be local multiplayer cause it said so in the game description. I prefer local multiplayer to be honest. The devs added online multiplayer, so if you like that, that might be a reason for you to buy it. This game is worth a buy. I'm very happy with it.
To call this just a board game doesn't really do it justice. It's a little more sophisticated in that you play in a 3D dungeon that constantly changes. Rooms can be flipped to give a different layout or rotated which changes the exit and entry points. In story mode you take control of various characters that have found themselves in the dungeon for one reason or another and to pass each level you are given objectives like reaching an exit or killing hostile opponents. To do this you role a dice which gives you 5 actions including movement, combat or dungeon manipulation. If you end your turn on a space, next to a monster or in a deadly room, you die. You also have to contend with a mean dungeon master who will mess with the layout of the dungeon and throw new monsters in to it. Every few levels are puzzle levels which have only one solution and you are given fixed actions to use. Some of these look impossible at first but knowing what actions you have gives you a clue as how to tackle them. This game won't appeal to everyone, like any dice or card game, luck plays a big part and there will be instances when you simply don't have the actions required to get to safety and you will die... often! On the flip side it's also rewarding when initially it looks like there is no hope, but then you flip the board, swap places with a player, jump over a gap, kill a monster and manage to escape. Another thing to be aware of is there is waiting, it's a turn based game and some levels have up to six computer opponents so it takes time for the computer to make all their moves. I also found it confusing at the start and it wasn't until I completed a few levels that I fully understood what I was doing and started to enjoy it. I understand there is multiplayer against other human players which I haven't tried, or you can play against the computer. Either way you can get all of the multiplayer achievements. This game is clearly a labour of love by the developer who is very active in the forum listening to suggestions, addressing any problems and making improvements. If you like board games or TBS and like a challenge then I recommend you give this game a go.
