An interesting detective game with a deckbuilding twist where you use cards to break through to others and find the truth. The game takes a few hours to finish and a bit longer to complete all the side stories and get all achievements. The gameplay mechanic was pretty interesting and I liked how the strategies changed as time progressed. At the start, brute forcing is much easier than analysis because of the card availability in the starting deck. As you complete more side stories, you unlock more cards you can add to your deck. As difficulty increases, modifiers and health are added to opponent cards which makes it much harder to brute force and I found analysis to be easier. That being said, both brute force and analysis are viable methods which adds a bit of variety and lets you play the way you want to, with each method presenting different challenges. (Side note: I noticed that the analysis symbols don't change when you fail and restart, so you really can't beat a level, just record the symbols and go in with the prior knowledge.) The game is quite easy and as long as you build an alright deck it shouldn't be too hard. Story wise, the narrative was quite interesting as there were many mysteries to unravel on multiple levels. Some of the twists were predictable, but they weren't ruined because the comic strip cutscenes add a lot of style to the story. A few of the side story plot points felt a bit bland, but overall I liked the fact that there were side stories added. The character designs are also very stylized and they're generally nice to look at when they're supposed to be. Character actions feel realistic and most of the plot points are believable when the context of the story is taken in. While the game is translated, there isn't a huge impact on the reading experience as long as you have a bit of cultural context. The music in the game supplements the story quite nicely. The music itself is quite repetitive, but I never found it overstaying it's welcome. The music for the boss battle was completed unexpected and absolutely amazing. The sound effects were quite funny but also added a nice touch to the style of the game. I would recommend this game if you like deckbuilders and are looking for a mystery game with a story and a slower pace.
I tried really hard to justify giving this game a positive review, because I want to encourage indie devs to make more games. Unfortunately, in this case, it seems like this game is gonna be a case study in the importance of polish and proper translation. So for the new folks thinking of buying this game, you play as a reporter investigating an incident at a construction site. Cutscenes are in a "comic book"-style, and gameplay consists of the deck-building and the interview card game. There's also a cafe screen, which functions as a menu for side-interviews or proceeding with the main story. Here's the negative parts: * Technical issues. The game is really slow & unresponsive at times. I'll click on the New Game button, and nothing happens for several seconds. Anecdotally, it tends to happen when the game language is set to English for me. Your mileage may vary. The game just has a really aggressive autosave system that just puts you right back where you left off. When I shutdown the game in the middle of a cutscene because I want to change language settings, upon restarting, the game bypasses the main menu and goes right back in the middle of that same cutscene. And you can't access the settings during cutscenes. You might like it; I did not. * The game is fairly short, covering only a single case. I paid less than 5 bucks for it, so I'm honestly OK with the length. Still, just thought I'd mention it, since I noticed that other gamers tend to value game length over the quality of the experience. * Voice-acting is only available in Chinese, not in English. Again, I paid less than 5 bucks for it, so I'm OK with this. Wish they had just played the Chinese audio over the English text, so you could tell if the character was angry/sad/surprised etc from the tone. * The English translation is terrible. This is the main reason I gave it a negative review. The English translation is inconsistent and confusing. Normally, a translator would lock in the translation for specific nouns and terms, so "health points" don't suddenly turn into "life points" or "stamina points". This also helps avoid duplicates, so you don't get two different spells and a vehicle all named "Fireball". Here, the same word (eg. "questioning") can refer to different concepts, and different words can refer to the same concept (eg. questioning/inquiry). The translator did not decide on a style between "...this deception card's Defense Value will -3..." and "...its defense reduces by 3 points..." It's also really weird how perfect some of the grammar and punctuation is, especially with the very awkward and unnatural phrasing. It feels as though multiple translators worked on this, and none of them actually played through the game with the final translation. You can get "Pray to tell, where are you..." and "I'm the epitome of a good man". Even the same card can have different names in different places: There's a steam achievement called "Done at a Stroke", with the requirements <<Play "Reject Negation", "In the Know", and "Thoughts" in one analyze round.>>. Yeah, the card isn't called "Reject Negation" in the game: It's "Discard the Negative". There's also spelling errors, so they didn't run a spellcheck over the final version of the game. A card can be named "Eliminate Modfcation", card types can be "Strategyt (copy)" etc. (The section here used to be about the Chinese voice-acting vs the in-game text. I removed it.) Conclusion Honestly? For the price of less than a coffee, this game should be great fun for an evening or so. The story is pretty relevant to modern events, the artwork has its own distinctive style, the characters are understandable and the VA is decent for an indie game. Half of those compliments immediately vanish when you switch to the English version. I'd be willing to change this review to positive if the English translation gets fixed, but as of the current version, it's really not a great experience for English players.
Card Detective is a card-battler and deck-building game in which you take on the role of journalist and detective Hazel Gong, who initially reports on the practice exercise at an abandoned building site, but accidentally stumbles upon a mysterious dead body. In addition to containing detective elements through which we will occasionally get to know the plot of the entire game, the same story is told in the form of a comic, or manhwa. You will play Card Detective for three to five hours, it contains very interesting card mechanics, and the graphics are even more attractive, as if we are playing an interactive comic book. I have to admit that the story was intriguing, it kept me going until the end, it was full of plots and intrigues, each part of reading the comic will not take long, the appearance of the characters and the colors are generally very good and what pleasantly surprised me was that the characters show emotions. The graphics and presentation of the whole game are impressive, and if you are not a fan of card-battler games, then the story will certainly attract you. Apart from the very well thought out graphics and comic, the gameplay may not be at the required level, although the concept is very interesting. Unfortunately, you will be able to progress through the game relatively easily or quickly using certain tactics or strategies, that is, "cheesing" through it. Card Detective is a game that has a lot to offer, but the developers seem to have run out of ambition to make something bigger. The tutorial is unnecessarily complicated, so much text and new words, and in the end it turns out that you won't need half of it. At its core, the game contains several types of cards; yellow cards (quick cards like drawing new ones or gaining action points), deception cards and strategies that are actually questions. There are also "enemy" behavioral cards that you may or may not have to destroy, and they also have special effects that can make your life miserable, for example, to prevent the effect of your card. What is certainly commendable is the ingenuity and appearance of the cards. It's impressive that there are two types of gameplay, but technically one is more profitable than the other. Plus, it's fun to combine different cards (you can have a maximum of 16 cards in a deck) and experiment with different ways of playing. There are even a lot of maps that you unlock by solving side missions and main missions. I recommend going through all the missions, as that's the only way to unlock all the cards while playing.
What could have been better?
The main menu where you choose which mission you want to solve is so unintuitive, poor and static. To return to a particular mission, you must click on the report menu and then find the one you want to return to by clicking on the character. The game didn't show us that anywhere, I discovered this quite by accident. The game also doesn't introduce you to the fact that you have to save the game in order to continue from where you left off. There is still no option to skip any scenes; if by any chance you lose, you will have to repeat all dialogues and clips of the comic in order to continue. One very annoying feature is asking questions when you use cards during gameplay. Apart from the fact that this dialogue is repeated with each character (sometimes it doesn't make sense), that is, the questions and answers are always the same, you can neither skip it, nor speed it up, nor change it in the options. If only there was a separate section in the options just for gameplay so we could customize our play style. In general, some cared need balancing, especially enemy behavioral or deception cards, because some you simply cannot destroy or it is almost impossible to do so. In order to possibly enjoy reading the comic, i.e. so that you don't have to keep clicking, the developers gave us the option of automatic reading, where parts of the comic appear in certain sequences. However, it all goes very fast and you don't have time to read absolutely anything and in the end it's more worth it to manually click everything. Finally, the price of this game is €3.99 and it is absolutely worth playing and trying out this interesting and short title. Developers just need to dare, expand their horizons, and something unique can be created from this game. I would like to see a free mode, where you can play against anyone at any time. I wouldn't want this to be just about the comics and the story, because I was personally very intrigued by the approach to the game itself and the way it is played.
My Experience I'm always interested when developers combine deckbuilding with a new theme I haven't seen before. In 2021, developers Klabater & Juggler Games combined deckbuilding with managing a traveling circus troupe to create The Amazing American Circus, which I found to be a lot of fun. Developer MuccyGames here combines deckbuilding with interrogation from a news reporter to create Card Detective, and again I had a good time. However, I can't say that I totally understood the story. Some aspects of the original Chinese didn't translate particularly well to English. There were a lot of references to the "masters" of various characters, and the meaning of this word here wasn't entirely clear to me. Is "master" referring to someone's boss at work? A mentor? A parent? The poor translation affects the gameplay to a small degree as well - everything related to your discard pile uses odd terminology. At the same time, I was able to understand the interrogation mechanics well enough. You're given two ways to obtain each fact you're looking for. You can either "brute force" your way through someone's defenses, or correctly guess or deduce a series of X's and O's. The vast majority of your red interrogation cards have dual functionality and can be used to either damage defenses or guess an X, O, XX, OO, XO, or OX. As it's simpler to brute force your way through defenses, the deck you're initially given access to utilizes this strategy. However, by the end I found it much easier to complete the series of X's and O's (the game calls this "analysis" I believe). After completing a single attack on a defense, you're given a clue to help you solve the X and O pattern, but I often did not find these useful. I found it more useful to randomly guess, as there are cards that replace themselves when you guess incorrectly. I enjoyed creating a deck that could quickly and efficiently solve these X/O patterns. The game features sidequest interrogations, but these have no gameplay reward (no additional cards). I guess the reward is learning more about the context of the crime, but I found the story so difficult to parse that I didn't find the few that I did all that enlightening. If you enjoy deckbuilders, you'll likely find something to enjoy here. Card Detective certainly isn't one of my favorite 2023 releases, but it was compelling enough for me to see through to completion.
GAMEPLAY 7/10 Card Detective is a card battle game set in a comic book style where you can build your own deck as you see fit, even adjusting it from one battle to the next. The battle setting is unique in that you are using cards to break down the mental defenses of characters you are interviewing in an attempt to determine if they are lying or telling the truth. There’s about 5-8 hours of content here but unfortunately not a lot of replayability other than if you want to try a couple of different deck builds. NARRATIVE 7/10 In the story you play a reporter who’s investigating an accident at a construction site and must interview both witnesses and other characters to determine what happened. Is there more here than meets the eye? Is there a cover up? Was the construction company negligent? True to its comic book style character’s personalities are exaggerated and over-the-top which you may find charmingly-cheesy depending on your tastes. Neither the story nor the characters are especially nuanced and anyone with a bit of history with narratives will see through certain characters almost immediately. GRAPHICS 7/10 I loved the realistic comic art style the devs chose to drive the narrative forward. But the graphics fall a little bit flat on the card art. Cards are hand drawn but very similar to each other. SOUND 6/10 The music is great and sets the mood well. Unfortunately the soundtrack is limited and audio engineering is almost non-existent with tracks stopping abruptly, followed by a few moments of silence, only to have the same song start again. About 3 hours into my playthrough I turned the music off. VALUE 9/10 Card Detective is less than $5 on Steam without a sale and with up to 10 hours of content that’s not a bad value at all. OVERALL 7.2/10 Video review: https://youtu.be/9rB0cxrwBd4
Some of the game mechanic need to improve, in one of the part, i totally lost when about 4 hours into game, the no explanation or how to do, either i miss the tutorial or it wasnt explain that well. the comic style animation is one of the reason i picked up this game, it was enjoyable to watch like a manga unfold itself with the gameplay. however, the dev need to improve the timing on the last picture frame, it directly cut toward the gameplay and i wasnt able to read it on them. another annoying part, you cannot just restart the card investigation if you make a mistake, you can quit out of the conversation, but you have to rewatch some of the animation, which is kinda of annoying. overall for the price and the time you can play, i would recommend it.
makes no sense
