Camper Van: Make it Home

I usually like cozy games like this but this was just boring and didn't feel like there was any point to the game but to organize things that don't fit well into shelves. It didn't feel satisfying like the unpacking game. Not my cup of tea. I see what they were trying to do but the execution was not for me.

I like the concept of this game a lot, and for the most part, I really enjoyed playing this game. The camera controls are definitely kind of janky and hard to adjust to but after a couple hours, I got used to them (they never really stop being janky though). The different locations are really neat, and I do find the environments quite cozy; the music adds a lot to this, I did really enjoy listening to the ost while decorating. This game is definitely a sandbox kind of decorating game where nothing really happens and you're just meant to unpack things and place them where you like and move on. It's not really an issue for me, as I do like decorating and organizing, although it'll make any subsequent playthroughs a little redundant. (I'll be replaying at least one more time for achievement hunting and it will be somewhat boring, but I don't mind mindless organizing lol) I admit, sometimes unpacking the same items over and over can get kind of tedious, especially since there is basically no variation in the items. I think by around the fourth (maybe even third) level, you've kind of got an idea of the pool of items to unpack, with just an extra mug or book going forward. So really, the part of the game that kicks my brain into gear is fitting all those items into a new space whenever you upgrade the van. I wish the van itself had a bit more customization, too. You get to customize colors and patterns of things but not really any layouts or compartments or anything aside from the paint job. I would have liked to change up placement of drawers or maybe things inside the drawers, like the utensil drawer or closet shelves. I'd say it felt like I had too much space by the end - or maybe it felt like I had too few items? But I'm also someone that likes a bit of clutter in decoration/organizing games like these. The final level felt like trying to space items out as much as I could but the fridge space and closet space still had completely empty compartments; maybe it's just because I had a particular way of organizing? Additionally, as a small note, I found the spaces between items in, say drawers felt too large sometimes. I found myself confused as to why certain items couldn't be placed a liiittle closer together, especially in the case of big items like the guitar or wok. (That wok was actually my biggest annoyance lol At one point I just left it on the ground outside in frustration of not being able to find a suitable place for it to my liking) This game definitely isn't nearly as narrative-driven as a game like Unpacking, which it clearly takes inspiration from, but I still found it charming (though admittedly, not nearly as satisfying). I don't know that this is a game I'll be replaying much in the future, but I enjoyed my little time with it :)

There are few games that truly scratch that Unpacking itch, but Camper Van is just that. And like Unpacking is tragically short. Sure, it's got more levels than Unpacking, but still. I do love that there is a creative mode where I can make my own little dream van. It does suck that the main mechanic can be frustrating. Some things can't be stacked, some small items can't be placed in the thinner drawers, and the controls can be frustrating. I get that this is a puzzle game, but I should be able to stack makeup brushes in the thin drawers. Anyway, I do still love this game and the art style, but maybe get this at a discount. Or get it if you're really needing more Unpacking-like games.

TLDR: Overall, an extremely charming games with adorable art and amazing cozy vibes. However, if unpacking games such as this are not typically your vibe, this will not change that, as it did not for me. That being said, if you love slow-paced, cozy games, this is probably for you. Pros: + Each area feels distinct and immersive because of the art direction, music, and ambient sounds. + SO.... CUTE.... + Color palette is such a chef's kiss + Everything feels extremely well thought-out, even the achievements; you can tell a lot of love went into the making of this game. + Creative mode is truly wondrous. In the short 15 minutes I was in it, I had a lot of fun scrolling around and decorating. Cons: - Story mode has very limited decorations and styles. - Sometimes, even with all the cabinets and storage space, I found myself running out of space quite often... perhaps it's a skill issue on my part though? - Because of this game, I have unfortunately discovered that this genre is simply not for me. I adore games like Sun Haven and Stardew Valley, but for some reason, this did not click with me as much as I wanted it to. If you have a similar palette for games as I do (I also love MMOs & horror games, if that helps?), this is something to think about. Was it worth it? I got this game during the Steam summer sale, and I think I got great value out of it. However, I would definitely not have paid the full $16 for it, especially as I didn't know if I'd like it. From a business standpoint, steam and devs make more money during sales than during non-sale periods, so I would recommend buying this game on sale regardless. Thanks for reading this far! Graphics are adorable but the controls made me motion sick.

Even though the aesthetics are pleasing and the atmosphere of a game itself is really cozy and relaxing, unfortunately the way you "put things away" is quite annoying. Most items cannot be stacked or even put next to each other. Since the main theme is to unpack things and assemble them, I'd expect that such mechanics wouldn't be a problem but it definitely got pretty annoying fast. The controls are also kinda weird I must say. But, the aesthetics were really nice, and the way you get to customize your camper is adorable, I just think that the whole concept and mechanics could benefit of a bit more work put into it.

If you loved Unpacking, you'll love this one. Great story, wonderful music, cozy vibes. Highly recommend.
