Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection

No, none of the games are good, I just recommend it since it's a good collection. Yes, I 100% it, I don't regret it.

I find these games fun to play in short bursts and not to complete. From what I remember Bubsy 2 might be the best, but I've yet to play the storybook one. The games are quick paced platformers akin to Sonic, brought down a little by some inconsistent hitboxes, and a lot of unavoidable obstacles since you can't see very much of the screen at once and your acceleration is absurd. I think the latter can also be attributed to games like Sonic but that's saved through the ring system. I believe later Bubsies at least allow for multiple hits, and most of bubsy 2 isn't designed for you to outrun the camera so this design issue is lessened a bit. Bubsy 1 also has a weird physics thing when jumping on or near ramps saves your direction of motion as if you're on the ramp that makes it a chore to play and feel good. Bubsy 2 has a lot more variety. I played some of the gameboy bubsy and despite all the built in warnings against the game, I think it's still a better designed game than the first. Bubsy 3D is famously panned, I think most reviews only show the first couple levels but it is genuinely interesting, and they try a lot of things that kind of make you think on a meta level about game design and what does or doesn't work. I think it's a historically important game and I'm glad it's here. they even have a remapped control mode to play the game with a slightly normal control scheme. I don't think Bubsy is that bad compared to most of its contemporaries on the time of release, save Bubsy 3D which feels a bit like a necessary experiment. The games all have toggleable cheats, and there is a rewind which helps ease the pain on some of the levels. The thing that's interesting to me is the extras, I think they genuinely took ALL of the documents related to Bubsy and published them. They have the standard character art, they have design documents for levels, letters to publishers, and even an EGM(?) article about Bubsy. They also have pictures of merch, commercials, various pictures of the design teams and hastily scribbled notes on napkins about bubsy's controls and physics from sleep deprived designers. They also have standard creator interviews, and a localization guide for bubsy in japanese (?). They even have the Bubsy cartoon pilot. It's a level of completion and thoroughness that I don't think any of these other game collections can measure up to. Overall, good collection, I do have a fondness for the sega genesis versions of bubsy 1 and 2 but even outside of that I think the museum stuff is good and this has a few games that have never been rereleased before now.
