Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons

This game controls differently than any other game I've played. You are in control of two characters simultaneously, which takes some getting used to. The control is relatively simple, each character is controlled by one stick and one action button. Once I had a feel for the control, it flowed much better. The two character control allows for more variety in puzzles and actions. Gameplay consists of exploring areas and solving puzzles to progress. Later on you have to avoid traps and enemies. There is no combat. The narrative is reminiscent of games like ICO, where all dialogue is in gibberish language. The two brothers communicate mostly by saying each other's name. The narrative is well designed. It is always clear what you are trying to accomplish. This is also a rare example of narrative development happening through the controller, though I can't explain how this is done without spoilers. The narrative itself runs a broad spectrum of feelings. The early sections are quite charming with lots of fun moments. The mood grows more serious and dangerous as the journey progresses, with many intense and disturbing moments intermixed with scenes of wonder and beauty. It made a deep impression on me. It has been several years since I played it and I still remember it quite well. I am aware there is a remastered version now. I have not played the remaster.
