Brigade E5: New Jagged Union is a dense and uncompromising tactical strategy game developed by Apeiron and published by Fulqrum Publishing that aims to capture the chaos and moral ambiguity of modern mercenary warfare. Set in the fictional tropical nation of Palinero, the game places players in the role of a mercenary commander navigating a volatile civil war where power is fragmented, alliances are unstable, and profit often outweighs ideology. From the outset, it is clear that Brigade E5 is designed for players who enjoy complex systems and deliberate pacing rather than streamlined accessibility. The structure of the game revolves around recruiting, equipping, and commanding a squad of mercenaries as the political situation in Palinero steadily deteriorates. Unlike more linear tactical games, Brigade E5 allows players to approach the conflict from multiple angles, choosing which factions to support, betray, or ignore entirely. This flexibility gives the campaign a sense of agency, as the world reacts to your actions and shifting loyalties can alter both mission availability and the broader balance of power. Narrative is delivered primarily through context and consequence rather than scripted storytelling, reinforcing the sense that you are operating in a morally gray conflict zone rather than a heroic adventure. Combat is the game’s defining feature and its most divisive element. Brigade E5 employs a hybrid real-time and turn-based system known as Smart Pause Mode, which allows the action to flow continuously while automatically pausing during critical moments. During these pauses, players can issue detailed commands to individual squad members, queue actions, and reassess positioning before letting the fight resume. This system aims to combine the tension of real-time combat with the tactical precision of turn-based play, resulting in engagements that feel unpredictable and often punishing. When it works, firefights are intense and methodical, demanding careful positioning, line-of-sight management, and smart use of cover. The depth of the combat system is further reinforced by an extensive arsenal of weapons and equipment. Firearms behave differently based on caliber, attachments, and ammunition type, and even small changes in loadout can dramatically affect performance in battle. Armor, visibility, and character skills all play a role in determining outcomes, encouraging players to think like tacticians rather than action heroes. This level of detail can be deeply rewarding for players who enjoy experimentation and optimization, but it also contributes to a steep learning curve that may overwhelm newcomers. Outside of combat, Brigade E5 includes a strategic layer that governs movement across the map, resource management, and long-term planning. Mercenaries must be paid, equipped, and kept alive, and poor decisions can quickly leave a squad underprepared or financially ruined. Choosing where to deploy your team and which contracts to accept is often as important as how you fight on the ground. This broader layer gives weight to every engagement, as losses are persistent and recovery can be slow, reinforcing the game’s harsh and grounded tone. Visually, the game shows its age, with dated character models, stiff animations, and environments that prioritize function over atmosphere. While these elements can detract from immersion for modern players, they do little to obscure the underlying systems driving gameplay. The interface, however, is often cited as one of the game’s weakest aspects, with dense menus and unclear feedback that make mastering the mechanics more difficult than necessary. Patience is required, as understanding how systems interact often comes through trial, error, and external research rather than intuitive design. Sound design and music serve their purpose without standing out. Weapon effects and ambient audio support the tension of firefights, while music remains understated, rarely drawing attention to itself. This restraint fits the game’s grounded approach but does little to elevate the experience emotionally. Instead, the emotional weight comes from the consequences of failure—losing a skilled mercenary or watching a carefully planned operation collapse due to a single mistake. Brigade E5 is not a forgiving game, nor does it attempt to be. Its systems are complex, its interface is clumsy, and its pacing is slow by modern standards. Yet for players willing to invest the time to understand its mechanics, it offers a rare kind of tactical experience that prioritizes realism, consequence, and strategic freedom. Every victory feels earned, and every setback reinforces the sense that you are operating in a hostile and unpredictable environment. Ultimately, Brigade E5: New Jagged Union stands as an ambitious but flawed tactical strategy title that appeals most strongly to hardcore fans of mercenary-focused gameplay and experimental combat systems. While its rough edges and dated presentation prevent it from achieving mainstream appeal, its depth and willingness to challenge the player make it a fascinating entry in the genre. For those who value complexity over polish and are willing to wrestle with demanding mechanics, it remains a distinctive and memorable tactical experience. Rating: 6/10
Топовый олд тактикуль ,тем более наш,да устарели механики игры и визуал,но палец вниз явно не заслуживает,лучше наверно в калибр 7,62 поиграть 6/10
I've loved this game for years! Since it was new! The developer has cool ideas about timing the weapons and the variety is awesome for the gun nut!

This game lacks in being a role-playing game, compared to the likes of its sequel and Jagged Alliance 2, the game it obviously wants to be, but it more than makes up for its shortcomings by providing excellent tactical fun, Its advantages over its sequel include being much more stable and having maps with less janky pathfinding and collision. The AI might also be better, though that is harder to determine -- there are no issues with them phasing through walls like they always do in 7.62, at least. The maps are also designed in a more interesting way in a sense that 7,62's battles mostly take place on wide open fields, and while hills and microterrain do add to the possibilities in such situations, the fact is that CQB scenarios are hardly ever present... in Brigade E5, the player often has the option of forcing the enemies into close quarters, and there are fairly frequent building clearing scenarios, which certainly adds some variety, and allows weapons like SMGs, pistols and shotguns to shine. Overall, this game is very fun and I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys fun in their video games. It frequently goes on sale for incredibly cheap (along with its sequel, and specifically, 7.62: Hard Life), so you'd be remiss not to try it.
Нормальная трилогия разрабов, наравне с troika games. Советую каждую.
