About

They became known as the Ilcyon, slaughtering armies and obliterating towns as they ravaged the lands, leaving Ashmyr in peril.
Until a new path to hope was formed by a lone warrior. He united the tribes for the sake of survival against the Ilcyon and began a new order, The Bound. Only those proven through years of harsh training were initiated.

Interesting an unique, but has some glaring issues. No indication of which attack you can repel and which you have to dodge. Too many upgrades immediately unlocked one after the other, it makes it feel meaningless.
Very fun
Couldn't get invested in it.
Bound By Blades is an indie action-RPG developed by Zeth and published in 2022, available on Steam for players seeking a more casual yet focused take on the boss-rush subgenre. Rather than aiming to rival the scale and narrative density of traditional RPGs, Bound By Blades distills the genre down to its core elements—combat, progression, and customization—wrapped in a charming art style and a surprisingly robust system of upgrades and crafting. While it doesn’t break new ground in mechanics or story, its compact scope and accessible design make it a unique offering for players who prefer bite-sized battles over sprawling worlds. The premise is straightforward: in a world torn apart by monstrous beings called the Ilcyon, players take on the role of one of three warrior classes, each with distinct stats and abilities, to fight back against a series of powerful foes. There’s a light narrative about rebuilding the world and protecting sacred lands, but the story remains mostly in the background, functioning more as context than as a central pillar. This isn’t a game that tries to immerse you in lore-heavy worldbuilding. Instead, it keeps its focus squarely on gameplay—primarily the series of challenging boss battles that form the backbone of the experience. Combat in Bound By Blades is methodical and pattern-based, borrowing heavily from the likes of Monster Hunter or Titan Souls but in a much more simplified format. Each battle is contained within a small, circular arena, and players must dodge, block, or counter their enemy’s attacks while waiting for openings to strike. The emphasis is on learning attack patterns and timing your moves rather than overwhelming enemies with speed or flashy combos. This design results in a game that feels strategic and approachable, especially for those who might find more intense action-RPGs too punishing. However, that same simplicity can sometimes work against the experience, making the action feel repetitive or limited after extended play sessions. What gives the game its staying power is its upgrade and crafting system. Every defeated boss drops materials that can be used to forge new armor sets, weapons, and enhancements. The crafting loop is satisfying, giving you a tangible sense of progress as your character grows stronger, your gear becomes more elaborate, and your ability to survive tougher fights improves. Each piece of gear has its own bonuses and synergies, encouraging experimentation and replaying fights to collect rare components. While the grind can become a bit formulaic, the game’s bite-sized nature makes it easy to dip in and out without the commitment often required by larger RPGs. The three playable characters—Teo (balanced), Guren (speed-focused), and Kota (tank-like)—offer enough variety to encourage multiple playthroughs. Their differences aren't just cosmetic; each has unique animations, attack speeds, and stamina pools that affect how they engage with bosses. This level of mechanical variance adds depth to what could otherwise be a one-dimensional combat loop. However, the game would benefit from further skill customization or branching abilities to give each character more personalized progression, as much of the upgrade path still centers around gear rather than innate skill trees. Visually, Bound By Blades adopts a warm, colorful, and distinctly hand-drawn aesthetic. The characters and monsters have a soft, almost storybook-like design that gives the game a cozy atmosphere, despite its often intense battles. Animations are fluid, and while the battle arenas are simple in layout, the visual clarity helps in parsing attack telegraphs and enemy patterns. The UI is clean and intuitive, which suits the game’s user-friendly approach, though a bit more flair in visual feedback (such as stronger hit effects or more dynamic camera work) could have added punch to the combat. Musically, the game features a subdued and melodic soundtrack that enhances the overall atmosphere without overwhelming it. The music does a fine job of shifting tone between the hub world—calm and hopeful—and the boss fights, where it becomes more dramatic and tense. That said, the limited variety in audio design becomes more noticeable over time, especially as you return to the same arenas for rematches or farming sessions. The sound effects are functional, but there’s room for improvement in terms of immersion and intensity. One of the game’s most admirable qualities is its accessibility. It’s designed with a welcoming difficulty curve that slowly ramps up, allowing players to learn mechanics without being punished for mistakes early on. While the endgame bosses do become more punishing and require tight execution, the game rarely feels unfair. Additionally, the game supports co-op play, allowing players to team up and tackle bosses together. This cooperative mode adds significant replayability and mitigates some of the grind, though online matchmaking can be inconsistent at times. Where Bound By Blades stumbles is in its long-term variety. After a while, the structure of “fight boss, collect loot, craft upgrade, repeat” begins to wear thin, especially if you’ve seen most of the content or are grinding for specific materials. The limited pool of enemy types, small arenas, and lack of major gameplay twists or narrative developments can lead to fatigue. For a game built around repetition and refinement, it would have benefitted from a broader suite of mechanics or meta-systems to keep things fresh in the late game. Despite its limitations, Bound By Blades is a commendable effort—particularly as an indie title—and shows a lot of heart in its design. It offers a compellingly focused take on the boss-rush formula, appealing to players who want challenging battles without being overwhelmed by complex systems or sprawling open worlds. Its strengths lie in its accessible combat, charming visuals, and satisfying upgrade loop. While it might not have the depth or variety of larger action-RPGs, it carves out a niche for itself with a distinct identity and a clear sense of purpose. In the end, Bound By Blades feels like a compact, polished gem—one that doesn’t try to do everything, but does what it sets out to do with clarity and competence. It’s not for everyone, especially those looking for sprawling adventures or narrative depth, but for fans of pattern-based combat, crafting, and simple co-op fun, it offers a cozy, rewarding experience with just enough bite to keep you coming back.
