[h1]Make sure to cap the game at 60FPS using any means necessary. Many core mechanics are linked to the FPS, so leaving it uncapped will cause major issues.[/h1] I'll update the review again once I've had a chance to properly play the game with this newfound fix, but I wanted to publicly make a note so that my comments below could be ignored for the time being. [hr][/hr] [strike]In the five hours I’ve already sunk into this game, I’ve managed to clear nine rooms of what I believe to be a ten room dungeon, two of those hours being spent trying to clear the last room of an invincible necromancer and his four skeletal bodyguards, to no avail, and the first of thirty towns is still nowhere in sight. While I do want to eventually finish this game, I am not looking forward to the tedious and dissatisfying grind to come. 50% of the game is waiting for one of your party members to recover enough stamina in order to walk.[/strike] The game doesn’t tell you what each building is or who different people are until you interact with them. [strike]With a persistent combat bug, even the most basic of enemies (The first encounter, right outside Fort Northern’s gates, for example) become seemingly invincible, taking upwards of a five minute click-fest to kill. God help you if you attracted more than one at a time, because that ended in the death of my entire party every time.[/strike] Maybe you’re somehow meant to progress more before leaving the fort, but the game starts you off with an abundant lack of information, and I couldn’t be bothered wandering around for another hour talking to every copy-pasted NPC just so I could find any inkling of information on how to properly progress. Unofficial patches might add some much needed features to the game, but they don't fix many of the otherwise game-breaking bugs, making them more prominent if anything. On the bright side, I now have the Pest achievement in Wallpaper Engine. [strike]Edit: I returned a couple days later only to find that the monsters I spent 4 hours killing had all respawned.[/strike]

BorderZone is an ancient game from 2006. It's a whopping 18 years old at the time of this review. The game lacks support for any modern gaming display resolutions (or widescreen monitors), hasn't been modernised or updated to run smoothly on modern gaming PCs. Despite this lack of modernisation, it carries a pretty high price tag for such an ancient game. This seems to have been put on Steam as a nostalgia gouge, or just a cash grab to try profit from abandonware. This action RPG was rough around the edges when it launched almost two decades ago, and today, "rough around the edges" would be too much of a compliment that this doesn't deserve. It's a clunky mess. Fuzzy, awful graphics (even for 2006, when we also got RPGs like Elder Scrolls: Oblivion and World of Warcraft!) and simplistic and unenjoyable gameplay round out this bargain bin filler. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The game only displays in 4:3 pillarboxed aspect ratio, due to the age of the game, it predates the 16:9 widescreen gaming standard established back in 2006. It's possible they're marketing this towards people using an old CRT they found in a dumpster, or this game is being specifically marketed towards people gaming on PC's from 1995... either way, this isn't really acceptable in the modern era of PC gaming. It's obviously not going to look right on a modern 16:9 gaming display. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 2 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. Reviewing SteamDB to check how popular this game was with players reveals a surprise... there's a modest spike in player counts for the game. But this only happened once, around the same time that trading cards were applied to the game... so this is just card idlers getting their cards and moving on. A closer look at the numbers shows the game just has a couple of players every week running up the game and idling it for cards, then deleting it. We must ask how it benefits gamers for there to be so many games like this, with no merit as a serious game, that only generate sales from people idling and selling the trading cards. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam? BorderZone is relatively expensive for an abandonware nostalgia gouge, at $3 USD, and it's not worth it. The game is just too old, hasn't been modernised. And as the old saying goes, you can't go home again. Even when it was new, this was never a triple-A game. This is the kind of game that went almost directly from the warehouse into the cheap bargain bins at the front of the shop. Now, on Steam, without any modernisation? This is impossible to recommend. This is also competing with over 11,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.
BorderZone, developed by Saturn-plus and Orion and published by Fulqrum Publishing, is an action RPG that reflects the ambition and rough edges of mid-2000s design. It combines real-time combat, party management, and a branching narrative set in a world where remnants of modern civilization collide with fantasy elements. The game sets out to deliver a large, choice-driven experience, but while its ideas are compelling, the execution often struggles to keep pace with its scope. The setting of Terra is one of the game’s more intriguing aspects. Following the destruction of Earth, a new world emerges where magic, mutated creatures, and fragments of lost technology coexist. Players can approach this world through different character archetypes—typically warrior, mage, or rogue—each offering distinct abilities and progression paths. The narrative allows for multiple routes, with choices influencing how events unfold. This structure gives the game a sense of freedom, encouraging players to experiment with different builds and decisions, even if the consequences of those choices are not always as impactful as they initially appear. Combat takes place in real time and is supported by RPG systems such as leveling, skill development, and equipment management. Players can recruit companions to form a party, adding another layer of strategy to encounters. In theory, this combination creates opportunities for varied tactics, but in practice, the combat often becomes repetitive. Enemy behavior lacks variety, and encounters tend to rely on similar patterns, which reduces the need for strategic adaptation. While character progression introduces new abilities, it rarely changes the core flow of combat in a meaningful way. Exploration plays a significant role in the overall experience. The game world is relatively large, with multiple regions to traverse and a variety of quests to complete. There is a clear effort to create a sense of scale and discovery, and at times, the game succeeds in making the world feel expansive. However, the design can feel disjointed. Quests are not always well-integrated into the narrative, and the pacing can be uneven, with long stretches of similar activities breaking up the sense of progression. The party system is one of the game’s more ambitious features, allowing players to recruit and manage multiple companions. Each character brings different skills and abilities, which could, in theory, lead to more dynamic gameplay. However, the system is hindered by clunky controls and inconsistent AI behavior. Managing companions can feel more like a burden than a benefit, as they do not always respond effectively in combat situations. This limits the strategic potential of the system and can lead to frustration during more challenging encounters. Visually, BorderZone shows its age. The environments and character models are functional but lack detail and polish by modern standards. While the world itself has interesting ideas, the presentation does not fully capture its potential. Animations can feel stiff, and the overall aesthetic lacks the refinement needed to make the setting truly immersive. The interface also reflects older design conventions, which can make navigation and management less intuitive than expected. The audio design is similarly understated. Music and sound effects provide basic support for the gameplay but do not stand out as particularly memorable. Voice acting is limited, and much of the story is conveyed through text, reinforcing the game’s old-school approach. While this may appeal to players familiar with older RPGs, it also contributes to the sense that the game has not aged gracefully. One of the game’s biggest challenges is its lack of cohesion. While it includes a variety of systems—combat, exploration, party management, and branching narrative—they do not always work together smoothly. Each element has potential, but the overall experience feels fragmented, with inconsistencies in pacing, mechanics, and presentation. This makes it difficult for the game to fully deliver on its ambitious design. Despite these issues, BorderZone retains a certain appeal for players who enjoy classic action RPGs. Its non-linear structure, character variety, and expansive world offer a level of freedom that can still be engaging, particularly for those willing to overlook its technical limitations. It feels like a product of its time—ambitious and experimental, even if it falls short of its goals. In the end, BorderZone is a game that is easier to appreciate for what it attempts rather than what it achieves. It offers glimpses of a deeper, more engaging experience but is held back by repetition, dated design, and a lack of polish. For players interested in retro RPGs, it can be worth exploring, but it is unlikely to resonate as strongly with those seeking a more refined or modern experience. Rating: 5/10
