Good game
20 years later and it's still fun to play. What else is there to say?
When Borderlands came out in 2009, it was a surprise for many of us who were just looking for another shooter. Developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K Games, the game introduced something that was still unusual at the time: a looter-shooter FPS with RPG progression, randomized weapons, and full cooperative play. The gameplay loop was simple but extremely effective: explore, shoot enemies, collect absurd amounts of procedurally generated guns, complete missions, and level up your character. The skill trees added enough customization to make different characters feel distinct, while the cel-shaded art style gave the game a visual identity that helped it stand out among the thousands of military shooters released during that era. Co-op was one of its biggest strengths. Being able to play the entire campaign with friends made the game even better. At the same time, one of the smartest design choices was that the game works perfectly as a solo experience. That might sound obvious today, but many multiplayer-focused games suffer once the player base disappears. A good comparison is modern games like Elden Ring Nightreign, which solved the problem of finding teammates by integrating community tools like Discord. But when Borderlands launched, that kind of solution was not common or easily accessible. Because of that, the ability to enjoy the full experience alone was extremely important. Despite its relatively simple story, Borderlands managed to build a strong identity. The world of Pandora, the humor, and the early foundations of the lore helped the game stand out among countless shooters. It built a fanbase and created big expectations for the future of the franchise. And for a while, it worked. Borderlands 2 improved almost everything and became the peak of the series. Unfortunately, the franchise struggled afterward. Later entries and adaptations seemed more interested in changing direction than respecting what made the series successful in the first place. One of the biggest mistakes a long-running franchise can make is ignoring its own lore. You can expand it, evolve it, or explore different perspectives—but you can’t simply rewrite things whenever it’s convenient. Even series that had missteps, like Dark Souls II, never mocked their own world-building or fans, which is why the community still respects them. In the case of Borderlands, the first two games remain the best. Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is decent, but when the most memorable thing about it is Claptrap, that tells you something. In the end, Borderlands deserves credit for creating the foundation of the looter-shooter genre and delivering a unique experience at a time when the FPS market was completely saturated. Even today, the original game and its sequel remain the strongest entries in the franchise.

better than the movie
Points forts Gameplay addictif : milliards d’armes, skill trees, combat frenétique. Humour mordant, quêtes délirantes, Claptrap iconique. Coop 4 joueurs fluide, DLC GOTY inclus (Claptrap/Zed). Vieilli bien : beau en 2026, perf solides PC/consoles. Points faibles IA basique, monde ouvert vide par endroits. Pas UE4 (moins flashy que BL3). Note : 9/10. Classique looter-shooter intemporel, remaster parfait. Idéal si tu aimes Diablo-like FPS.
a fun and addicting game, slower paced and not as polished as later games in the series - this 1st entry still has the major elements that makes the games a blast. Interesting combat, satisfying weapons / loot and a captivating look & atmosphere keeps you coming back for more.
