The Metroidvania Review
Scored Summary | | Subscribe to our Curator How Metroidvania is it? High Fit – The map is more useful than the first game, and similar to the first game it fits the Metroidvania mold almost perfectly. Check out our Forum here.
Full Review
For the first time since this curator has started, I am reviewing this game before I have finished it. The reason for this is because of a game-breaking glitch that has prevented me from facing the final boss. I have played everything up to that point, and I do not think that my opinion will change by playing through the game a second time to avoid this glitch. But, I cannot comment on the game's ending for judging its story. I expect that the programming oversight will be addressed in a future patch, so my opinion in this review does not reflect this technical issue. Legends of the Universe - Cosmic Bounty (which I'm just going to call Cosmic Bounty from here on) trades LoU - Starcore's broken level design for boring level design. Cosmic Bounty doesn't have any dead-end traps, and has a functional and helpful map system, but it excludes the time saving teleporters, and overall the map is smaller and less interesting. I say the map is smaller, but each individual room is stretched out to two or three times the size of what it really needs to be. A lot of rooms are also empty resulting in a lot of simple walking from place to place. To make matters worse, the objectives tend to pendulum back and forth from one side of the world to the next as you unlock new powers. It feels padded, even though it only took me 2 hours or less to get to the final boss door. But then, empty rooms are almost a blessing, because when there are enemies they tend to be more of a nuisence obstacle as you're heading somewhere else rather than an interesting challenge. While I like some of the combat changes from the first game - like infinite regenerating missiles - the enemies still provide little variety. And once you get the Beam weapon, you're so overpowered that every encounter outside of bosses is solved in exactly the same way. Bosses have improved a bit, though the strategy of mashing the fire button and taking advantage of no post-hit incibility frames still persists. Plus, you have to fight one boss 4 times. I don't really want to spend this entire review saying negative things about this game. The things I enjoyed about the first game still apply. I like the aesthetic, and the funky music beats. I actually enjoy the campy story and the general feel of the game. But besides that it's really hard to recommend this series so far. There's a lot of potential, but even though some progress has been made on the technical side, I generally prefer Starcore over Cosmic Bounty. 1.5 out of 5 An Open Letter to the Developer: Hello LunarCore Games, I like what you're doing with the Legends of the Universe series, and I really do want you to succeed. I know that giving both the games in the series poor reviews does not help progress that goal, but I cannot write anything other than my honest opinion. I commend you for finishing a series of games. Just getting something published and salable is an achievement, and I also think it's a sign of talent - especially with 8 games published under your company. I feel that with a little work, these games can be truly great. You mentioned in one of your forum posts that the Legends of the Universe series was an attempt to combine Metroid and Mega Man. I think that one of the best ways you can improve the next game is to look a little deeper into your inspiration. To me, Metroid is all about atmosphere and exploration. It's about seeing something just out of reach and puzzling out how to get there. The series is at its best when it includes tools that - to coin Mark Brown - are "Versatile Verbs" , and applying "Dual Purpose Design" . The bomb doesn't just blow up walls, but it also let's you jump while in ball form. The Wall Jump doesn't just get you to the next wall, but can also be used to climb to sequence breaking heights. Looking at Super Metroid, there's variety in the environments, and how you interact with the environments. I wouldn't say that Super Metroid's strongest point is the individual encounters, but the scope of the world as a whole. But Mega Man on the other hand is all about the specific encounter - the challenge of the moment. That's what makes combining the two ideas such a great one. This is also something that's very difficult to pull off in a Metroidvania - but I've seen it done. If you're not against trying other developer's works, I'd highly recommend you try Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight (on Hard Mode) and Hollow Knight. They're both Melee based Metroidvanias, but I think they're best in class when it comes to setting up challenging moments while still maintaining the contiguous world with passages you're supposed to traverse multiple times. I think one of the biggest challenge points you face is using Differences in Scale as your primary progression reward. Notice that Mega Man and Super Metroid do not include a single power up that says "Increases Attack Power". Instead, both offer different types of weapons with some extra effect. Metroid has the ice beam, which is a great application of dual purpose design since it assists in combat and creates platforms. It also has the Wave Beam which lets you shoot through walls, subverting one of your basic gun's weaknesses. The plasma gun is the only upgrade that strictly serves a damage purpose, but making it a separate weapon gives it a different feel which is more important to the player than effect. But more importantly, differences in kind allow you to tune the game's combat to be less about emptying enemy health bars and more about positioning and pattens. I think this is a good part of why collecting 8 Robot master weapons is one of the defining characteristics of the Mega Man series. And as far as how to go about desiging more closely to a Mega Man game, I highly recommend checking out one of the MANY reviews of the series. Egoraptor's Mega Man X Video is of course an entertaining classic. I personally find Nathaniel Hoover's Review/Let's Play/Show-off videos entertaining, and informative of at least one man's opinion (I especially recommend him because he LOVES robot master weapons.) And finally, the good folks at Sprites Inc. have hosted two successful Make a Good Mega Man Level contests, complete with judge commentaries on each of the levels. Check it out - it's a good way to hear some opinions on what makes a Mega Man level good (and what makes it bad.) It also might be helpful to read the comments of some of the MAGMML Let's Play videos ( Roahm Mythril is my favorite as far as that goes.) And of course, I am happy to continue to provide my own feedback - but I'm just one guy with specific tastes, as objective as I try to be. I really appreciate what you do, LunarCore, I really do. And I still look forward to what may come in the future. Sincerely, Professor Q
Legends of the Universe - Cosmic Bounty is yet another of literally thousands of 2D retro pixel platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere. It's an extremely badly made ripoff of Metroid (copyright Nintendo, 1986). To date, it's unclear whether Nintendo have taken any legal action against the "developer" to preserve their intellectual property rights. It's a very buggy (to the point of being unplayable) 2D retro pixel side scrolling "Metroidvania" platformer slapped together with GameMaker Studio, so the developer chose pretty much every way one could fail at game development and ran into them headfirst (again). It gets worse. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. While there are options to change the resolution for the game, all this does is scale up the simplistic 2D art assets used to make the game, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality. Without any other substantial graphics tweaks, it's not possible for gamers to improve the lacklustre 2D visuals. Compounding this problem, the developer didn't bother with resolutions over 720p, so the game looks like complete garbage. Despite being over 30 years newer than Metroid, the game looks considerably worse in quality. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers. Some of the defects in the game can be attributed to the choice of using the GameMaker Studio construction kit/toolset. This is a very poor quality toolset favoured by amateur developers as it's cheap and requires little in the way of development skill, but unfortunately has very limited capabilities. Just as you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, you can't make a great video game if you use a terrible engine. GameMaker Studio is most commonly used to make retro pixel shovelware and cash grabs. Other reviewers report that the game also contains enough breaking bugs that it simply cannot be completed. I can't confirm this as the game presented enough defects almost immediately for me to make a fairly brisk assessment that it fails to meet acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected in the general public reception. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 4 players. That's right, only 4. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in the game is to be expected. Gamers just didn't take this low quality game seriously, and for good reason. Legends of the Universe - Cosmic Bounty is relatively cheap at $2 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend.
I enjoyed this game much better than the first. Graphics are a little more detailed and objectives and upgrades are shown on the map, (tip- if the objective isn't showing up on the map pause the game and you can view all maps that way). You can rebind controls to your liking. There's slightly less backtracking this time around too. There's even a short little shmup level as well. It's great to see the dev improving upon the first game. Having said that, there's still a few things that need to be addressed... There's still a lot of rooms that are quite large and empty, so condensing and/or shortening them would make for a better experience. Music is still terrible and far too loud but thankfully you can lower or turn it off. It would be cool if running would be auto enabled and if you want to walk you could hold down a button instead of the other way around. The sound effect of running sounds really harsh, like he's running on a constant bed of water. Controller bindings don't save when you exit and restart the game. For all it's faults though, it's still an enjoyable little bite-sized metroidvania that took me over 3 hours to finish. Looking forward to more games in the series, and a shmup would be cool too.
Short entertaining Metroidvania. It starts slow for the first 15 - 20 minutes or so, but it gets good after that. Fun platforming, classic Metroidvania exploration, decent story, good upgrades. My first run-through was under 4 hours, and I'm not an amazing gamer - so you may be able to run through it much faster. I have several thoughts in the "Cons" category, but they are mostly minor. The good far outweighs the bad here. The map is too helpful but also confusing (see below), there are not that many enemies. Enemies introduced in the first section never reappear, which is odd. Some power-ups are only used immediately after getting them and then almost never again. And other power ups are used so much you wonder why they aren't default. Some of the barriers that are unlocked by power-ups are way too similar looking so you think you can open it with what you have, but you can't, and the animation doesn't really help to show why. (IE - if a beam can't open the door, it shouldn't pass through the door, it should stop at the door and maybe sparks fly off.) MAP Problems: It tells you were things are, which is helpful, but I wish it was able to be turned on and off for people who want the challenge. It is divided up into sections that don't easily tell you which part connects to which. And some segments connect to multiple other segments. If you have the map for that area, you can always see where you are within that area - but it is not easy to see which areas you can get to from where you are. The areas don't have names and the maps aren't color coded or anything to each section. Overall: Fun game, retro graphics, story that is better than it needs to be, solid game play. 7.5 / 10
