About
Bitter Harvest is a narrative-driven farming sim offering a 5-8 hour single-player campaign shaped by relationships, moral choices, and branching endgame outcomes.
Your dream of owning a farm falls apart the moment you arrive in the village. The land has already been claimed, and the only job left is collecting the town’s garbage. With nothing but determination, you begin piecing together a new life from what others throw away.
Bitter Harvest is a 2D farming simulation about ambition, reinvention, and quiet revenge. Earn money through crafting, farming, and odd jobs as you climb from the bottom of the social ladder. Build relationships with the townsfolk, uncover their secrets, and decide how far you’re willing to go to take back what was stolen.
Will you work honestly, use what you learn about others to your advantage, or bend the town’s trust to get ahead? Your actions shape your reputation, your relationships, and the kind of ending you receive.

I appreciate the unique premise of this game. You can choose to be bitter or vengeful about your bad luck, which aren't very common choices in these types of games. I also appreciate that even the righteous choices didn't always have a perfect "we did the right thing - happy end" reply or outcome. It's refreshing. Unfortunately the game does not offer enough replay value to properly explore all of those options. The gameplay is very barebones. I had a hard time telling the villagers apart, because they all feel the same despite having different pixel sprites and names. You do the exact same things every day, it's basically like one of those oldschool stat-raising sims. The controls on steam deck also felt a bit clunky. Getting the positioning right for the farming bit was a pain. I couldn't figure out the timing for fishing either - sometimes I caught them easily, sometimes the very same type of fish kept escaping all day. The biggest downside to this game is it's price tag. I feel like half of it's current price would be fair for what it offers, There are games in the 10-15€ bracket that have more polished gameplay, bigger worlds to explore and a lot more content per single playthrough. The unique narrative perspective alone isn't enough to compete with all that, imho.
I really wanted to like Bitter Harvest, because the premise is actually interesting. At first it looks like a cute farming sim where you move to a new town to start over, but then the farm you were promised is already taken and you end up working as the town’s garbage collector instead. From there, the game leans more into revenge, manipulation, relationships and trying to climb your way up from nothing. That idea could have been really fun. I like that it tries to twist the usual cozy farming setup and make it darker, because not every game in this genre has to be sweet, harmless and full of perfect little villagers. I actually enjoy when a game has some bite to it, and the whole “quiet revenge in a small town” idea had potential. Sadly, the actual game felt too rough and empty for me. The presentation feels uneven right away. The main menu background has a nice idea behind it, but the menu text looks cheap and pixelated, which gave me a bad first impression before I even started playing. The in-game visuals also feel much more basic than the store page first made me expect. Gameplay-wise, it did not keep me hooked. The world feels very small and basic, a lot of the gameplay becomes repetitive fast, and the “farming sim” part feels more like a small piece of the game than the main focus. It has fishing, collecting, crafting and relationship systems, but none of it felt deep enough to really carry the experience for me. I also think the game is a little misleading if you go into it expecting a proper farming sim. Yes, there are farming elements, but the main focus feels more like trash collecting, errands, social climbing and revenge choices. That is not a bad idea on its own, but I wish the systems around it had more depth and polish. I don’t mind dark humor or morally questionable choices in games. Honestly, that could have made Bitter Harvest stand out more. But for me, the execution just did not carry the concept enough. The premise is weird in an interesting way, but the game itself feels too thin and rough right now. There is potential here, and I do think the idea could become something fun with more work, but in its current state I can’t recommend it. It feels more like an interesting concept that needed more time, polish and depth before release. First impression is a simple but interesting farming sim game with choices you can make! Cute pixel graphics with a true cozy vibe. The controls are very simple but that's totally fine! The character who took the farm, Chadwick, is a butthead, of course. lol He's a perfect fit for his role. The villagers have their areas they hang in and move around town a bit so it feels lived in. You earn relationship points for talking to them and you find out some secrets that allow you to make choices that matter so be sure to explore! I love that you can actually make choices that are questionable and morally wrong if you choose to. There's a bar, a store, crafting, fishing, farming, and foraging. All the good stuff that make farming sims so addicting! Don't go into this expecting it to have as much content as the big, popular farming sims because it doesn't, but that's okay. It has it's own twist on the traditional "new person instantly gets a farm in a new town" story that is fun and refreshing! Some thoughts on improvements as I've played: Some more depth in the conversations would be great. Area feels a bit small starting out which can be nice because it's not overwhelming, but early on I wondered what else I should be doing after my daily main tasks. Really like the forgeables and mining, would love to see more with that! One of the first quests is to earn 4 stars with at least 6 villagers but it's not really clear to me what "4 stars" actually means since the relationship points are just points. The mini games for crafting need some work. The arrow one is a bit long in my opinion and I couldn't figure out how the bar one worked. Tried it several times and failed quickly. (Playing on controller) There is an option to turn off the mini games which I appreciated! It does not turn off the reaction based fishing however. I did not try any cooking yet, unsure if the mini games for those are different because I turned mini games off. Overall I really appreciate the effort put into this game and the creativity with the storyline. Would love to see it go even further!
Update Sunday May 24th 2026: 1.1 looks very promising. I am going to wait for a few more updates until I play again, but some of my major concerns in this review have at least been partially addressed. Review Saturday may 23rd 2026:This is a 30 minute visual novel with 5.5 hours of grinding added on. Lots of potential, but lots of picking up fishing/mining/fishing that didn't craft or cook into anything. Replayability to get to different endings/dialogue is close to nil because of the sheer amount of daily grind. The trash picking up is actually fun! So it's optimizing the route for the grind and to socialize with characters. I wish there were more things you could do with the cyanide. Or... Why does a character have that in their trash in the first place? The characters are fun, the scandals are interesting. However, as with most morality games... It's pretty black and white. Good is not asking for anything, helping everyone, and not complaining at all. Bad is almost cartoonishly evil, asking for bribes. I know it's premise is about making the best of being a garbage collector. However, there's some middle ground of advocating for yourself vs being aggressive or passive. I was expecting something at the end story wise with the governor esp with everything that mentioned weapons! Like a character being a spy or you getting in trouble for covering things up or taking bribes. I also was expecting all the warnings about being on the dock at night to amount to something. Or for me to be able to push Chadwick in lol. Also... There are literally two farms in town. Could have been fun to have a produce/crafting competition at the end to show off your skill. Overall, if it was 2 hours, it would be fun. But the grind between days 16 and 30 was hard as I had unlocked all the scandals and it was just... 5 in game hours of watering 16x6 plants daily.
There was so much potential to make it a great game, but it fell flat. I really wanted to like the game, but the more I played, the more I got frustrated with the lost potential. It`s a very short game. It took me around 4 hours to finish it (I have 5.7 hours "play time" because I am afk a lot) You are only playing for one ingame month. After half the month was over I already reached enough friendship points and enough money for the endings. Going through the days felt tedious even though you can`t do much. I am disappointed that my save files got deleted after reaching the first ending. I wanted to try out another ending (I saved enough money for it) without needing to replay the whole game. That isn`t possible and I am honestly too tired to replay the game again, even though it`s so short. The NPCs don`t have much personality and at the end of the game I didn`t care for any of them. The only one who was fun was your rival, Chadwick. He made me laugh a few times. There wasn`t much dialogue, the NPCS repeat their texts a lot. Most of the items you collect through mining, foraging and fishing are useless. The Quests I got just wanted lot of Golden Carps, a few crops and a handful of crafted items. You can`t craft anything for yourself. Farming: Your farm is so boring. You can`t upgrade in any way. You just have a few farming plots that you can plant and water. That`s it. No house upgrades, no animals, nothing. The crops have all the same quality and they all sell for roughly the same. I don`t know if my expectations were too high. But I thought we could work to improve ourselves to compete against our unfair rival. That we can uncover some shady business in the village through careful discussions with the villagers, after building up a relationship, through snooping and listening. Instead we sometimes get 3 big "!!!" in the houses, that show us something. There isn`t much gameplay. There is no need for a strategy. Crafting, farming, fishing and mining was really boring. The map is tiny. Foraging has just a tiny area. Mining had just one little room? You can fish lots of different fish, but you don`t need most of them. The ending was really unsatisfying. You didn´t see how the villagers, especially Chadwick, reacted. You just..reached the last day of the month, made a decision and then you got shown your ending(you just got told how you did). Your decisions don`t feel like they have consequences. One of the villagers told me, that my decision would have negative consequences in the form of more expensive items for the village. But that didn´t happen. So what was the point? Just for the ending? Nothing in the game changes, just your rating in the ending. If the game stays in this state, I can`t recommend it. It needs serious improvements. I love the idea of the game, but the implementation was pitiful.
The premise has a lot of potential and it was intriguing enough for me to try it but it honestly feels like a bare bones game design school project that was pushed straight to publication. Its a very sparse world where everything looks the same, most gatherables have no functional use, zero building or growth mechanics beyond relationship levels with villagers, no animal interactions of any kind, and what seemed like an interesting premise was a dead end plot after pointless grinding. With a couple years more work, dedication, and imagination this very well could have been the next big cozy game but being published as a glorified demo pretty much nixed that potential.
SPOILER WARNING FOR BELOW ORIGINAL REVIEW. UPDATE: the Dev is trying to make the game better based on the comments and feedback they are receiving. I MIGHT give the game another try after several more updates. If I should go back to it. I'll update my review. SPOILER WARNING FOR BELOW ORIGINAL REVIEW. ORIGNINAL POST: DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY....... This game had sooo much potential. It says it is a farming game.. it's NOT. You are the village Garbage hauler, who had your farm stolen from you because the Mayor took the bribes from the governor and had to give YOUR farm to the Governor's nephew. you spend the whole game collecting the garbage, going inside to "discover" the villager's scandal/secret and then confront them with it.. boring.. The game ends on Day 31 when you must choose to pay the 25k for forged documents to get your farm back or be honest . Either way the game ends and all your save file is erased.
Nepotism wins again. smfh
A short, funny game that I overall enjoyed, with some minor complaints. SPOILERS - Pros and Cons
Pros: -Multiple endings -Easy mechanics -Smooth gameplay -Cute character sprites -Short run time -Cheap -Controller friendly

Cons: -Extremely repetitive, enough that it was kind of a slog to finish -- this, imo, is the worst aspect of the game and might stop some players form finishing it. -Minigames get old QUICK, especially when you are trying to earn the amount you need for one of the endings, but you can turn them off (which I did around Day 20) -Extremely shallow characters, but that is to be expected with a game that is intentionally short
Overall, an easy and moderately entertaining time sink, perfect for a rainy Saturday. Run time was 6 hours
to get through all 31 days.
having a lot of fun with it so far. the villagers are all a bit morally gray which is interesting. finding all of the scandals was really enjoyable, and i like how you can choose to tackle them. some of the options you get around town are hilariously diabolical, though i haven't brought myself to play the villain. gameplay is very basic, your time will be spent collecting trash, farming, fishing, foraging, and mining. no tools to upgrade and pretty limited area of exploration (but the days do pass quickly). cooking and crafting include a minigame which you do have the option to turn off (thank you devs, it was fun the first few times). some materials have proven to be weirdly elusive (clay shortage?) i have had the UI disappear, but relaunching the game corrected this. i do wish there was more freedom in the character creator.
