I gave this game a day before deciding to review it but sadly my decision to write a negative review hasn't changed. First of all, I wouldn't call it a 'Hidden objects game' when there is only FIVE scenes, two of them are repeats which you'll have to return to again and find more items, so there are actually only three hidden objects scenes in the whole game including the bonus chapter. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1344068691 Now the story is a fantasy one. Yes, you start off as a detective who arrives in some town to solve a disappearance mystery, you even witness a kidnapping from an evil shadow right in front of your eyes.
and they never mentioned what happened to that girl who was kidnapped. she just disappeared from the whole game.
After that, the game takes a fantasy turn with all the elves story- which I'm OK with if the dialogue was better and the story wasn't all over the place. I disliked the voice overs so much, especially the main woman. Everything sounded so forced and they don't say the same thing written in the subtitles! I understand how these games are made but at least make things seem a little bit logical. Why would someone carry a lemon in their bag? Or why do I have to get water, putting it next to some raging fire to heat it up to melt some strawberries and get only ONE! And those actions takes forever to finish as the animation is pretty slow. Aside from that, the game is not clear at all with its objects. You'll have to find many scattered items in order to do a specific action. (I've played on extreme difficulty, it may be different with the casual one) Oh and mentioning the difficulty, there are THREE achievements related to gameplay mode. You'll have to play each one in order to unlock it which I find it very ridiculous. They should of let us unlock them all when we play the hardest difficulty, but nope, you'll have to play it three times to get 100%. The only thing I enjoyed is the art of this game, the locations looked really good, details of the hidden objects scenes are good too. However I didn't like the characters design at all, none of them appealed to me. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1337996345 http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1344752482 Fast traveling map is available and allows you to move from a location to another since there is a lot of backtracking in this game. The lack of journal made me sad however there is a detective board which shows you the progression of the story and some of the backstory of the characters (they are actually two) and the relation between the items you are collecting. Pros: +Fast travel map. +Well done art, areas look really good. +Steam achievements. (Require you to play the game three times to get 100%) Cons: -Bad Voiceovers. -Not good story (Ended badly) -No replay value. The main character's humorous lines and jokes, whenever he encounters anything, wasn't funny at all, and his constant line of 'Hell's bells' was very annoying. I was debating on giving this game a thumb up but after playing the bonus chapter I knew this should be a total thumb down. The extra chapter was random. It doesn't explain why everything changed (even if its hallucination) why everything turned back to how it was before you arrived in the city? What happened to the scroll you took by the end of the main chapter? So many things were not explained and I'm sorry but don't recommend this game.
«Beyond the Invisible: Darkness Came»
Adventure game, thriller, detective, hidden object. PLOT Gateville is a quiet town, until strange phenomena occur, some inexplicably disappear, and dark creatures roam the streets of the city, the inhabitants decide to escape abandoning the city to its destiny of a place inhabited by shadows. When a policeman is kidnapped on the road to Gateville, a brave and stubborn detective sent to investigate what is going on. Take on the role of this detective, you will have to look for clues in this empty and ruined town; when night falls, an atmosphere of fear is perceived because the screwers are not welcome. Be careful not to fall into the trap of the Shadows or will you become the next victim, make the right choices to fight the dark forces, will you be able to find out what secrets lurk and free Gateville from the black curse? PLAYABILITY The hand-drawn graphics are well done in the old NOIR style, in the locations that you visit a sense of abandonment of fear is perceived, of degradation in fact, most of the scenes are nocturnal with yellow lights that give a sense of gloomy and will make you perceive the loneliness of the protagonist There are animated images and videos that briefly tell the story. Lots of hidden object scenes, medium difficulty mini-games and eventually unlock a BONUS chapter. To unlock all achievements you must avoid using the "Help" button and never skip minigames Soundtrack suitable and well supports the dark spirit of the plot. CONCLUSION I recommend this adventure because it puts even the most experienced detectives in this genre of games in difficulty, quite pleasant, smooth and I have not found any bugs. This is very short mediocre game which I played on Casual setting. Took only 3 hrs. You are a detective called in to check out odd happenings in a small town. You find that black wraiths have terrorised the locals who are locked in their homes quivering with fear. You learn from a stranger that they are hunting a girl. The topic of the game was good as were the graphics. It was the gameplay that was frustrating....and in some cases very illogical. There are only 5 HO scenes which were all interactive and you had to come back to finish these off later. My beef is there is far too much backtracking. The map was useless as it didn't highlight active areas. You end up spamming the hint button because you don't know what to do next....or can't remember where a particular item is to be used. Voiceovers were ok, but the sound effects, especially the siren gave me a headache. Puzzles were easy. Apparently there were trophies to collect which I didn't know about. Tried to click on one and nothing happened. You often had to click items many times. Scrapes in as a pass because it had potential which was let down by bad game play. 5/10
I love Hidden Object/point and click adventure games, but this was a a pretty bad one. The story starts off with a detective investigated a seemingly haunted town and then it turns into Warhammer Fantasy with High Elves (the leader of which looks like Evangeline Lily just a little too much) popping up let and right. The story was pablum, the puzzles were dull and the hidden object scenes were subpar compared to what else is out there. The achievements were broken for me, although the publisher did post they have been fixed and I feel like I wasted two and half hours slogging through this thing. The English translation has issues too with several noticeable issues ranging from incorrect grammar/syntax on down to hidden object items being given completely different names from what they are actually called (in American or Queen’s English). This is an easy pass.
I am a little hesitating with the negative here, but there’s no neutral and I can’t recommend this game. Most of all, it is frustrating and coarse, some of the objects have to be clicked right there in the single pixel, some of the items are not clickable, but after you do something else in other location they become clickable, have fun walking around searching. Next, the objectives, the items you use, some of the puzzles are not logical at all, like putting the toy crane on the top of the building to take something of… tiny tiny plastic toy crane. So, when you are done walking around pointlessly and wondering how an umbrella is supposed to fight off the wolves, you have time to listen to the music. One third of the game an alarm siren is giving you a headache, and then battle horns take over, prepare aspirin. The good thing I can say about the game is the idea of “comic noir style” cut scenes, but again, only few of them are done in this style and the inconsistency is bugging me. The map is useless to be honest, nothing is marked there and you need to guess which location is which. It’s not even good for the achievements collectors as you need to play the game 3 times on every level of difficulty to get 100%. I’ve finished the whole game just to write a justified review, skip this one, there are much better HOPA games out there.
While at first I was kind of happy regarding the parti pris regarding the comics like of the introduction, I quickly was disappointed by the game, its logic and the issues regarding the way you have to click to aim properly at what you want. The Hidden Object scenes are a complete annoyance because of that. You need to click two or three times to the same items for it to be accounted and not having a message regarding spiderwebs on the very first HOG and this problem persist all along the game. It is a common problem in that sort of game to face moments where you pick an item while you have no idea what it will be used for. Not only you'll face this problem constantly in that one HOG, but earning the item also unlocks areas which weren't clickable before, so you can't even tell yourself "oh there is a big canister of oil there, it will be of some use when I'll fix that oil can I found inside the tram cart", instead, you fix the oil can and it's only after that the canister happens to be clickage for you to fill it. The tram cart is a really good example of the problem as the more you go inside the more you find stuff you couldn't do before because the area were clickable at all. As a result, you will constantly have to think backward, you will find an item, and then think of where it may be of some use, or constantly click the hint button because you cannot exactly go around your first gameplay without knowing certain stuff. Another example you'll face really fast is the ice truck you'll find in the second area of the game. You can click on it, only to see that there are frozen strawberries inside. Only you have to guess you can unscrew the little thing on the right by clicking twice on it, you'll then recover a broken umbrella. But that's not it, now you have a pipe that is proturing up the truck, pipe that you have to guess that you can pick without zooming on the cart, and you're also able to zoom down the cart to see that there is an area to open with a screwdriver that you don't have. I'm playing HOG games since really long and this one has been the most frustrating I came accross thanks to the fact you have to constantly think backward. It's not "okay, I need to find an item to fill it with oil" like an usual HOG, but it's more "okay, now that I fixed that can, I need to click everywhere in the town to find what I'm supposed to use to fill it. I don't recommend this HOG at all, there are a lot of good ones out there which don't push you to click randomly everywhere to find a solution or use the hint system as you constantly get stuck trying to find something logical to do. The only way to actually enjoy the game is to be a pyroman as you keep burning everything. If I wanted to play a clicker, I would simply launch one and not a HOG which bland story, real pointer problems (expect to click on everything 6 times before you manage to find the pixel where it works) and no logic at all.
This is one of those games that really needs a "so-so" rating instead of a positive or negative. I'd put it around a 5 or 6/10. First off, if you're an achievement hunter, bear in mind you will have to finish the game THREE times to get them all, as there are achievements for finishing the game in each of the three difficulty modes, and I've read that finishing in Expert mode does not unlock the "lesser" difficulty achievements. It's my understanding that starting a new profile allows you to choose a different difficulty level for the next playthrough. Translation is a little off, although I've noticed that the English voice acted lines are slightly different and "cleaner" in translation than the translated subtitles. I didn't run into anything egregious, translation-wise, and I found the "Americanisms" and slang kind of endearing, honestly. (Hell's Bells! lol) The gameplay is pretty basic HOG/puzzle style although the gameplay progression isn't always the most intuitive. Using the hint button outside of the HO scenes and minigames will not affect your achievements, however, so there's an "out" if you're getting irritated. The story itself isn't awful although I felt like there was a lot of imagery that was very strongly "borrowed" from Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit (especially the hint button itself, goodness. You'll know it when you see it.) The story itself doesn't feel like a copypasta, though, so I found it engaging enough. Overall, I got this for $2.49 on sale and I don't feel like it was a waste of a couple bucks for two hours or so of gameplay. I'll eventually go back and play through again for the last two difficulty-level achievements and the idea doesn't make me nauseated or anything. However, if you're very attached to the higher-budget and higher-quality Artifex Mundi and similar games, you may be annoyed or impatient with this one. If that's the case, put it on the back burner until you've exhausted the current supply of HOGs out there!
