It was an okay game, and by no means would I say it isn't worth a buy for people who like the look of the art style and love dogs. The gameplay was okay, but I found the plots to be a little cliché and predictable, and the art style wasn't quite for me. The dog care element of the game is well done and I like how it is implimented.
though the game can be a little glitchy at times and you unfortunately can't name your dog "ursus arctos horribilis" its still a lovely game worthy of your time, there is so much heart and soul in each character, the art is phenomenal and the dogs are cute
I very much enjoyed the game and I think it is worth its money regarding playtime, but I have a few things to say about this dating sim. Sometimes the relationships feel a bit rushed and there are also plot points that don't have a conclusion (example: the stolen camera). I don't like that, I don't want to sit there with question marks over my head at the end. Furthermore, I loved most the characters and I have no issue with loving the dogs more than the people, but Anders was giving me the ick. I love the general concept of his character. However, he tries to pull me into his lifestyle, lets me experience it without asking me first - if I recall right, but then reacts negatively when I mention I just want a burger? As someone with ADHD, who struggles with texture and taste and relies on safe foods, that made him very unlikeable. I need to go with what he wants for a positive outcome, but I cannot like stuff he doesn't or he will disapprove? Considering he is disabled, it makes me even more confused that out of all the characters he is the one to not consider the other person's needs and wants. Might just be me, but I think it doesn't make for a pleasant character to interact with.
Best Friend Forever is a cute game, but I don't think it offers enough to justify its full price. If you can grab it for around $10, I don't think you'll be disappointed with what you get. The problem is that it falls short of what it's trying to do. The dating aspect is decent because the characters themselves are interesting and likeable, but the relationships feel a little rushed. On the pet side of things, I was honestly disappointed that the NPCs' dogs looked better than most of the dogs I could actually adopt. There's also basically no customization, which feels like a huge missed opportunity for a game built around dating and raising a dog. Overall, it's charming enough to be enjoyable, but it never fully reaches its potential.
a really fun take on the romance visual novel genre! diverse characters, dialogue that made me laugh out loud, and interesting game elements alongside the story. i wish it was a bit longer but that's always a good issue to have!
Best Friend Forever is an upbeat blend of dating sim and pet-care management that invites you to settle into the vibrant, dog-obsessed town of Rainbow Bay. Developed by Starcolt and published by Alliance, the game combines lighthearted romance, social interaction, and the everyday joy—and occasional chaos—of caring for a canine companion. It’s a concept that feels instantly appealing for anyone who has ever tried to juggle personal life and pet responsibilities, and the game leans fully into that duality. From the moment you adopt your new dog and begin navigating the local dating scene, Best Friend Forever establishes a warm, optimistic tone that never loses sight of its central charm: celebrating companionship in all its forms. The aesthetic design immediately pulls you into its bright, inclusive world. Starcolt opts for expressive character art, pastel palettes, and a soft visual style that emphasizes friendliness and comfort. The dogs, of course, are the stars; each breed has its own personality, behaviors, and animated reactions that give them a strong emotional presence. Whether your pup is rolling on its back, excitedly bounding around, or giving you a disapproving stare when you forget to feed it, the animations make the dog feel like a genuine companion rather than a background mechanic. The human characters you meet—your potential romantic interests—are visually distinct, diverse in presentation, and grounded in their own lifestyles. The game’s writing reflects this as well, mixing humor, sincerity, and modern conversational rhythms to create a cast that feels earnest and welcoming. At its mechanical core, Best Friend Forever is structured around two interconnected systems: maintaining your dog’s wellbeing and navigating the dating routes of Rainbow Bay’s six eligible singles. The weekly planner becomes your main tool for allocating time. You decide how much of your week goes into training your dog, taking them out on walks, practicing tricks, or engaging in social activities with potential partners. Your dog has several stats—such as manners, sociability, and fitness—that improve with attention and influence how they behave during outings. Managing these stats doesn’t introduce high-stakes pressures, but it does encourage regular engagement with your pet, reinforcing the theme that romance should grow alongside responsible pet ownership. On the dating side, the game uses a combination of dialogue choices, planned dates, and casual encounters to move relationships forward. Characters are written with warmth and intentional inclusivity: they vary in gender identities, body types, careers, and personal challenges, and their stories feel rooted in everyday authenticity rather than fetishized tropes. Each route explores themes of compatibility, communication, and emotional vulnerability, making the romantic progression feel genuine even when the tone remains light. While the choices aren’t deeply branching, they offer enough nuance to let you steer interactions and build a connection at your own pace. Despite its clever concept, Best Friend Forever is not without limitations. The integration between pet-care and dating doesn’t always feel as intertwined as the premise suggests. While your dog accompanies you on dates and certain interactions acknowledge their behavior, the dog’s stats don’t have strong narrative consequences. This makes the two halves of the game feel parallel rather than fully blended, leaving players wishing that their training and nurturing efforts had more impact on relationship outcomes. Additionally, some dating routes feel shorter than expected, ending just as you begin to settle into a character’s emotional arc. The game’s overall length is modest, and its pacing may feel abrupt for players accustomed to more content-heavy visual novels. Small technical and writing inconsistencies also surface from time to time—occasional typos, minor UI quirks, and a few jokes or references that don’t fully land. These aren’t dealbreakers, but they remind you that Best Friend Forever is ultimately a cozy, compact indie experience rather than a polished, narrative-intensive blockbuster. Still, the heart put into the game is unmistakable. The developers prioritize representation, comfort, and emotional accessibility, and those values shape every interaction and story beat. Where the game truly shines is in the feeling it fosters: a sincere celebration of companionship, whether romantic or canine. There are no punishing systems or stressful management loops—just a gentle rhythm of caring for your pet, meeting new people, and growing into your new life. It’s a title perfect for players who enjoy slice-of-life storytelling, wholesome experiences, and games that value kindness over conflict. Even if its mechanical ambitions are limited, its heart is unmistakably large. In the end, Best Friend Forever succeeds as a cozy, inclusive, and endearingly sweet hybrid sim. It invites you to slow down, pet your dog, chat with interesting people, and enjoy the small but satisfying rituals of building a life in a community that celebrates love in many forms. It’s not the deepest dating sim nor the most complex pet simulator, but it offers a warm, memorable experience that feels like a wagging tail at the end of a long day—simple, cheerful, and exactly what you expect it to be. Rating: 7/10
anders...♡__♡ thats it, thats the review.
3/5 As many others have said, the game is lacking in depth and complexity of story, and is definitely better purchased when on sale, but that being said, it is very endearing! I loved the aspect which allowed you to bond with your dog, pet them, groom them, and even throw away their poops. The love interests are very diverse with unique personalities and charms to them. I wish there was more customization to the avatar creator because it does feel very lazy in my opinion to only give us two, and I do also wish we could custom-tailor our personality in the game a bit more because the corny, over the top sense of humor the PC has was kind of cringy at times. Again though, for what it is, it's a pretty good game with a shorter than average run time. I'll likely be replaying again to romance a few other singles I had my eye on after managing to date Anders!
20 minutes of this game and it was wasted. LGBT+ positive in the worst type of way. Diverse doesn't mean good. Bad writing that bored me and made me cringe in the first 10 minutes, bad character writing that made me cringe in the last 10.
