cute concept for a game but not so great in execution. rather repetitive, all the romance routes are set in the same main story which means that if u want to romance more than one character, youll have to replay the entire game and skip thru all the main story dialogue that is unrelated to the romance, which gets boring and tiring really fast. the dog training mechanics are not that fun either. the game could use more diversity in the player character avatars selection too, as there are currently only three avatars, that i assume are supposed to be different gender expressions, but all have the same skin color. i think having a few more sets of three just like the current one, but for different races would go a long way in making character creation better, and thats not even going into possibly more body types which would be nice as well. last thing is that during sachas route
u have no choice but to ask a clarifying question about his "reveal" as a trans man. which is fine i guess, even if it makes the pc sound like an actual idiot, but what i disliked was the dialogue sort of implying that the pc ISNT trans themselves. even tho i chose to go with they/them pronouns that route, which would kind of imply that my character is trans no?
which really irked me and brought me out of it for the rest of my playthrough. tho to be fair i did play this before the june 25th patch, which does say there were some dialogue changes included, so if this is no longer what happens in the game ill idk. eat my own hat or smth like that
First, I want to say that this developer has done more than I have ever done, and this VN is still really ambitious and I think accomplishes some of the interesting goals it set for itself. (A dating VN with a dog-caring component IS really cool!) However. I personally am really tired of "lol sploot dog cute random over the top silliness"-style VNs. Half of this story and dialogue contains puns, that's not a joke, it's CONSTANT. The other half of the story and dialogue is extremely irreverent and doesn't take ANYTHING seriously. It's very mildly hinted at that your character has a bit of a dark or tragic reason for moving, but when you find out what it is like an hour into the game, it ends up being ruined by that same lol dog rando cute silliness. Your character found a random dog during a really sad time, and it mysteriously led them to a bus stop, and now your character refers to it as the Dog Wizard. Because of all of that, the narrative is extremely shallow. "You're definitely just a person playing a VN so we're going to do the bare minimum to actually try to immerse you in our world." Seriously, the game does VERY little to pretend that you are a "real" character in a "real" world that it wants you to engage with on that level. No, instead, it mostly just says "Here's your dating app, you can see where people are at any given time, here's a lampshade where we acknowledge that that's really weird for privacy and safety reasons but then we blow that off because hey you're playing a dating VN with dog training, you're not here for real immersion, are you? Anyway, you only have 5 motivation points to do things, some events cost more than others! Also here's a bunch of spam in your inbox that we, the company in the game that created the dating app, could totally clean up for you, but we won't, because the developers want to shove puns in your face and be silly constantly. We're also going to constantly say that everything that happens is extremely "serendipitous" instead of trying to actually think of ways for things to happen to and around your character more organically." In that same vein, your character is nothing. They are a cardboard cutout. They make constant jokes about never unpacking, they sleep on the floor of their apartment, they have no personality except being a stone-cold idiot. They don't know how to cook. They only like burgers, apparently. They let Anders just walk ALL over them. And they apparently have to be nosy and/or oblivious about/to people's private lives (which is what made me just quit the game and finally write this review, it'll be detailed at the end of this review). Why do VN authors insist on making your character a tactless dumbass? You get NO input as to how your character actually acts, you get hardly any dialogue or narrative choices. You get your name, and a choice of one of.. three or four character portraits. You can apparently ♥♥♥♥ Anders on the first date, but it cut that date off so quickly I genuinely couldn't tell if I had ♥♥♥♥♥♥ him or not. Also he absolutely dictated the hell out of everything, my character did NOT get a say in ♥♥♥♥ even when they TRIED to be the one to decide where to go for dinner. Anders even said, "I still get to pick dinner but you can pick what you get for dessert" which was SO disgustingly controlling, and the sad thing is, I'm not even sure the developers realized that that was actually a real red flag of a thing to say in conjunction with how Anders has interacted with the character up to that point (and how your character thought of Anders in their head), I bet they just thought it was a silly joke. It's possible that Anders' controlling tendencies get touched on and resolved later in the game, but first, lol, no, not with this type of game, I have no trust that they would actually try to tackle character flaws like that in a serious and satisfying manner; and second, I am not playing any more of this game to find out. The dates do NOT mingle into the rest of the game at all. I went on several rapid-fire first and second dates with three different characters and their was no narration whatsoever of those things happening and possibly conflicting with each other. Like, I get not having it actually cause complications, it IS a dating sim and you do want your player to be able to test the waters with different characters, but there wasn't even a thought of any other character in your character's head between events. You do not get to pet the other characters' dogs. Fox is the worst character, she's insufferable, extremely not funny, and very mean. Actually Felix might give her a run for her money on all accounts, except that Fox is omnipresent and Felix is not. At least the art is nice, and the game tries to be inclusive. I like the music well enough. What finally made me quit was when I went on a first date with Sacha and one of his friends mentioned him transitioning. I (the human being playing the game, NOT the character) had already suspected that he was a trans man, but I didn't need to know for sure, he was cute and nice no matter what. However, your character is given a set of questions to ask, and one of them was "Transitioning?" Like they didn't know what that meant, or didn't realize, hey, maybe now is not the time to pry? And that would actually be okay, if it was part of a roleplaying choice you could make.. but it was not. You HAD to ask ALL of the questions for the game to move on. You were not allowed to NOT ask any question. So yeah. Do not recommend. The characters are prop caricatures and are written all the same way (that doesn't mean they all act the same, just that you can tell they were all written with the exact same ideas of characterization and stereotypes), the story does not exist on any more than a superficial level, and your character is an empty-headed milquetoast bore.
A cool and innovative idea that could have been done better. Dog training stats are mildly frustrating at best, most dateable characters are a little too shallow and you don't get very much control over your characters appearance or even their dialogue. (which i would think is pretty basic for a "dating sim" style game) I literally noticed instances of picking one of two dialogue options only for my character to say the second one in addition anyway. Also kind of falls into the "everyone-is-bi = representation" trope which is disappointing. Cute graphics but probably wouldn't play again. Bit short to be currently priced at nearly $30 AUD.
This game lacks depth in a weird way. Maintenance of your pet is extremely easy but training them in consistent categories to get achievements in level ten don't really make sense, putting all activities to a specific category doesn't accelerate it enough to reach that. Romanced three characters so far, all were pretty embarrassing orrrrrr 'cringey'. It's just a bad game and not particularly fun with its tedious tasks (you have to pick up your dog's poop everywhere, discipline them for cowering, pull them back from running away).
为了点数商城的背景而选择吃下这碗狗粮,我太难了。
Repetitive play cycle, and it really feels overall unpolished. I thought this was a really cute concept, but there's just nothing to it. No CGs, no CG menu for anything that would go there, and there isn't much more of a storyline except for 'win a dog competition'. $20 is a lot to pay for the game. *$10* is a lot to pay for the game. If you're looking for a dating sim, look at other games, or on itchio. If you want something low-price but high quality, check out Amnesia Memories. For half the price, you get 20+ hours of gameplay, and the fun of a welcoming community.
I was so excited to play this game, and while I'm still glad that I bought it, I have to admit that the experience was a little frustrating. In the end, I was mostly focused on just the dog raising aspect as that was the part I found most enjoyable. As other reviewers have noted, the game feels a bit rushed and unfinished, leading to both the dating mechanics and the dog raising mechanics to feel underdeveloped and leaving you wishing for something more. The main issue I had with this game was the writing, though. I don't mind the cheesiness and over the top cliches of otome games, but the characters here were so over the top that it had me rolling my eyes. I never thought that I'd feel preached at by a dating game, but this was super on the nose. This aspect also made pretty much every character shallow and insufferable, and in the end I was struggling to pick who to romance because I honestly didn't connect with any of them. I even disliked some of them. I ended up finishing Maribel's route, but by the end I still felt like I had hardly learned about her as a person and the relationship hadn't really progressed. It felt like a first chapter or prologue, and was lacking any conflict or tension at all. Maribel and the reader char still felt like nothing but friends at the end, and not even friends who care for each other very much. Also, for a game that purports itself as LGBT+ friendly, I didn't feel represented as a lesbian at all by this game, and if anything it was so over the top with convincing you how gay friendly it was that I just felt icked out, like my sexuality was a spectacle. The female characters were all very feminine and not relatable for us gnc lesbians. This also meant no romance options if butches are your type.
Don't get me wrong, this isn't a BAD game. The characters are lovable and their stories are sweet. But the dog training aspect is kinda frustrating. I love the idea of being able to train your dog, but in order to excel at any skill you need to let the others go, and so it almost feels like being a jack of trades just leads to mediocrity. I played through twice, and even on the playthrough where I did every bonus training session, I still only got bronze on everything. Couldn't get any skill above level five without neglecting other skills.
though the game can be a little glitchy at times and you unfortunately can't name your dog "ursus arctos horribilis" its still a lovely game worthy of your time, there is so much heart and soul in each character, the art is phenomenal and the dogs are cute
Super cute! Any game that lets me pet dogs is getting huge bonus points :D Each date character is super interesting :3
