A Solid Hand-Drawn Kung Fu Fantasy Metroidvania
A 2.5D metroidvania action RPG where the last descendant of ancient kung fu warriors embarks on a multi-continent quest to thwart a traitor's ambitions. Set in the shadowed land of Speria, the story centers on a race to secure the three rings of the Triskelion. The game's structure is distinctive, blending a top-down overworld map with side-scrolling dungeon exploration. Random encounters occur while traversing the overworld, with battles unfolding in terrain-specific arenas. Inside dungeons, acquiring new skills unlocks revisits to earlier areas -- a design that draws from both classic JRPGs and metroidvanias. The next objective is always clearly marked on the map, a thoughtful quality-of-life touch. Combat centers on the Phantom Pillar, a massive chain-linked stone column. Beyond its use as a melee weapon, it also serves as a shield, a platform, and a puzzle-solving tool. Having a single artifact woven into every aspect of gameplay expands the joy of exploration considerably. Mystic Arts (ranged sub-weapons like daggers, axes, and chakrams) and collectible talismans that modify stats add further build variety. A monster hunting system that rewards players for defeating set numbers of each species also provides ongoing combat incentive. The hand-drawn visuals are impressively polished. The background art enriching the dark fantasy setting is colorful and retains a distinctive beauty even in the darkest dungeons. Over 80 enemy types appear -- bosses included -- each with unique designs that avoid lazy palette-swap filler. Saving is manual only; death sends you back to your last save point, creating a tension that demands frequent saving. Areas for improvement include combat feeling somewhat stiff in the early hours and a story that comes across as fragmented and hard to retain. The stiffness fades as your action repertoire expands in the latter half, however. It is also worth noting that one section near the endgame features a sharp spike in platforming difficulty. A solid metroidvania whose fresh pairing of hand-drawn visuals and kung fu action gives it its own identity. For genre fans who value exploration and combat, this is a title well worth picking up -- especially during a sale. HHF-chan's comment: "Kung fu vania! Swinging that massive Phantom Pillar around and smashing enemies feels sooo good!"
Check out our Steam curator (link) , YouTube channel (link), and X(Twitter) (link)!
The game is beautiful, the controls however suck terribly and the maps for the world and dungeons are useless. Those two major flaws make it a non-recommend except if it is on sale for under 10. It took me 18-ish hours to find every item and hunt every monster. I'm sure most players could do it faster. No guides or maps until I was trying to find the last two monsters for a hunt. The big thing off about the controls is everything feels floaty. Move even a little and you will accelerate and slide on the ice. There are platforming requirements that are only hard because sometimes it just feels like the controls are unresponsive. The dash skill seems like it would be powerful but it is barely controllable as well and most of the end enemies seem to bounce you out of it. Some of the power-ups might be neat but most of the time I found myself just using the bombs all the time. When shifting between a skill often means changing out equipped talismans it's just a pain to switch skills when there really isn't much difference in how fast they kill. The world map is extremely arty to the point that it is useless to find anything. If the game had load-screens it would work for that. The maps inside the dungeons barely represent the rooms as anything other than a box and half the time it won't even show your position in said box relative to any exit/entrances. It will give you the barest of positional information on where you are in the dungeon as a whole. Fortunately, none of the secrets are hard to find or complete. The map will highlight a box with a secret in it. The pause menu "atlus" will tell you which maps contain what secrets you missed. So it is very hand-holdy to make up for the terrible maps.
As a huge fan of the Metroidvania genre, as well as a fan of Trent Kaniuga's work, I was really looking forward to playing this game. I know there have been other reviews where people didn't like that the character only attacked to the side, or that you can only save at a save point, but none of that bothered me in the least. Twilight Monk scratched an itch for me. I found it to be a lot of fun, it had great graphics, funny and entertaining characters, and overall a sense of replayability that I look for in my side scrollers. Could the ending have had more punch to it? Maybe? But for me the journey and discovery of secrets was more than enough to keep me entertained throughout. Looking forward to the next installment of the series if it happens!
Great combat, abundant save points it doesn't make you walk for miles after you die just to get to the point you were. Fair amount of exploration, great design, nice music, lots of scenarios and beasts to defeat. Great for learning the metroidvania genre, but it poses its difficulty, even for pro gamers.

A fun little Metroidvania. Combat is basic but serviceable. Definitely not the hardest game if you're even a bit experienced at platformers
I kept getting stuck in walls which ruined the experience for me as I had to restart the game and repeat what I had done. The happened in the overworld and in dungeons. The soundtrack was pretty decent in places though.
Um dos metroidvanias mais divertidos. Diversas missoes secundarias, jogabilidade excelente. Recomendo!!!
