https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zy0d0SW5GHM [[[[[ NO SPOILERS ]]]]] Don't be fooled by the NEGATIVE REVIEWS, this is a solid little Indie horror game. I'm not someone who particularly cares for puzzles, but if I can get thru these then you know they're not hard at all. After all, I'm a terrible gamer. I had a lot of fun with this and got genuinely scared more than a few times. Haters just gonna hate I guess? But don't be a hater, check out my HORROR game playlist for some scares and drunken good times! https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQTmUby5Dx3i00k2G_j7qILaINagnRUbv
A walking Simulator in an abandoned hospital that every minute has a jump scare, the most I have ever encountered in a indie horror game. This journalist got more than he could handle. NEVER go to a haunted hospital alone under any circumstance, lol. These spooks got me many times. I enjoyed the eerie and dark nature of the atmosphere as well as the tense sounds. Enjoyable game, see my playthrough here: https://youtu.be/s31cf5zMK6I
Beside Myself is one of those indie horror games that I did enjoy while playing, but it doesn’t really stand out among the dozens of horror games I’ve experienced. It’s solid — just not especially memorable. You find yourself in an abandoned mental hospital, slowly uncovering what happened in the past through exploration and flashbacks. And while that setup isn’t bad by any means, it is a premise we’ve seen quite a few times in the horror genre. That said, the game does what it sets out to do. The atmosphere is creepy, the environments are unsettling, and there are multiple jump scares that absolutely had my heart rate spiking. It ran well, and the scares were effective in the moment. Overall, Beside Myself is a good game. I’m not saying it isn’t. I enjoyed my time with it, and it definitely delivered some solid scares. It just wasn’t one of those games that sticks with you long after you finish — not a “remember when I played this” kind of experience. If you’re a horror fan looking for something familiar and entertaining to pass the time, it’s worth checking out — just don’t expect it to reinvent the genre.
Beside Myself, developed and published by ASK_GAMES, is a compact first-person psychological horror experience that leans heavily on atmosphere, environmental storytelling, and slow-burn unease rather than complex mechanics or prolonged gameplay. The game places the player in the role of Michael, a journalist and historian who enters an abandoned hospital after receiving an anonymous tip about secret experiments conducted within its walls. From the moment you step inside, the game establishes a suffocating sense of isolation, presenting the hospital not merely as a setting but as a hostile, decaying space that seems to resist being understood. The strength of Beside Myself lies in how it uses its environment to tell its story. Long, dimly lit corridors, locked wards, and derelict medical rooms form a labyrinth that feels deliberately disorienting. The hospital’s design emphasizes repetition and emptiness, reinforcing the feeling of being trapped in a place defined by neglect and buried cruelty. Notes, photographs, and scattered remnants of the past provide fragmented insights into what occurred there, encouraging players to piece together the narrative themselves rather than relying on direct exposition. This investigative structure suits the protagonist’s role well and gives exploration a clear narrative purpose, even when objectives are minimal. Gameplay is focused almost entirely on exploration and light puzzle-solving. Players search for keys, fuses, film, and other items needed to progress deeper into the hospital, often unlocking new areas that recontextualize previously visited locations. Puzzles are generally simple and grounded in environmental logic, though they occasionally suffer from unclear guidance, which can lead to moments of aimless wandering. While these moments can disrupt pacing, they also contribute to the game’s oppressive mood, making players feel lost and uncertain in a way that aligns with the psychological horror tone. Audio design plays a crucial role in maintaining tension throughout the experience. The game makes effective use of silence, distant echoes, and subtle ambient noise to create unease, often making players feel as though something is about to happen even when nothing does. When jump scares are used, they are abrupt and loud, sometimes effective, sometimes predictable, but always reinforcing the sense that the environment is unstable and dangerous. The visual presentation, while not technically advanced, supports this mood with heavy shadows, flickering lights, and unsettling imagery that emphasizes decay and abandonment over graphical fidelity. Narratively, Beside Myself adopts a restrained approach that will appeal to some players and disappoint others. The story touches on dark themes such as unethical experimentation and psychological trauma, but it does so in broad strokes rather than deep exploration. Much of the emotional weight relies on implication rather than character development, leaving Michael himself somewhat underdefined. However, this vagueness can also be read as intentional, allowing players to project themselves into the experience and focus more on the environment than on personal drama. The game’s short length, typically around one to two hours, makes it feel more like a concentrated horror vignette than a full-fledged adventure. This brevity works in its favor by preventing the atmosphere from overstaying its welcome, but it also limits how deeply the game can develop its ideas. The inclusion of multiple endings based on player actions and collected evidence adds some replay value, encouraging a second playthrough for completionists or those curious about alternative outcomes. Despite its effective atmosphere, Beside Myself is not without flaws. Navigation can be confusing, lighting can be excessively dark without adjustment, and some mechanics feel rough or underexplained. These issues, combined with the game’s reliance on familiar horror tropes, can make the experience feel uneven at times. Players expecting a polished or innovative horror title may find it lacking, while those accustomed to indie horror’s rougher edges may be more forgiving. Ultimately, Beside Myself succeeds as a moody, unsettling psychological horror experience that prioritizes tension and atmosphere over complexity or length. It is a game best approached with modest expectations, ideally in a single sitting, where its strengths can shine without its limitations becoming overwhelming. For fans of short, exploration-driven horror games that thrive on unease and environmental storytelling, it offers a haunting journey through a place that feels deeply wrong, even if it leaves some of its potential unexplored.
