Big props to the developer for completing this early access properly, most devs would abandon the game with those sales a long time ago. The game improved a lot, not just since the EA release date, but even from a few days ago, particularly when it comes to rebalancing enemies, it feels so much better now. I know it looks ugly and the animation is not exactly appealing, but it's a really fun game for replay value, it has a lot is going on under the surface with the attacks cancels, dodge-rolls, stagger mechanics, juggle mechanics and other compounding upgrades. Not to say that everything is perfect, the hitboxes in this game is something you going to have to learn by trial and error, and the platforming can be a pain in the butt. The game is not too complicated, ultimately you just have to rely on your reflexes and you don't have to utilize all the fancy moves, but the combat variety does make it more enjoyable, there are more than a few ways to swing the sword, plus all of the timing bonuses. The game has good upgrade support that encourages different strategies, you can focus on something simple like flat damage and sustain, but you can also stack explosion upgrades, stamina recovery, juggling improvements and magic synergy. You can choose between several characters that mainly have different movement speed, but some of them also have unique attacks, additionally to personalized stat distribution. As far as progression the game does not have anything that will carry over, each run you start with nothing, which is fine, it is a roguelite after all. The game generally works like an arena with spawning enemies, but you also get some platforming sections in between (granted those are not very enjoyable). If you are lucky enough to find someone for online co-op, it's actually fun, teamwork goes a long way here.
Pros:
+ deceivingly fun mechanics for attack and defence + many creative upgrades that encourage unique builds + several characters with unique perks and attacks + online coop, fun to replay, good challenge + achievements and leaderboards
Feedback:
Hitboxes and balancing - hitboxes and timing on some of the platforming can be pretty brutal, it's something you just going to get used to. Additionally, there are various issues with balancing, for example the life recovery on the mask is overpowered again, it should be reduced to 1 HP per kill, maybe even 1 per 2 kills. Some of the bosses seem to be too strong for how early they are in the game, you will be having this awesome run with so many item stacks, and then just one overpowered as **** enemy will completely faq you up. But you know, at least it's hard and keeps you frustrated on a reasonable level. No original music - correct me if I am wrong, I think it's just random free music you found on the internet. So can't give you any complements there. Overall Thoughts: 8/10 Really fun button-mashing game with more depth than you might think. Mainly the timing and pace of the combat make it enjoyable to grind, see how far you can get. It's not perfect, there are some annoying issues, but I still find myself coming back to this game very often. Again, respect to the developer for not giving up, I would not blame him for abandoning it, but I am pretty happy with the release version, much improved from where we started. It is a capital crime that this game hasn't received more exposure and it is the sole and single most damning thing I can pit against Steam is that it forces unseen gems like this to compete against a landfill's worth of absolute and total trash, asset flips and achievement count enhancers. The game plays somewhat like if you pared down both the amount of dimensions to a DMC game as well as your moveset. Every character's moves function the same with minor differences between different characters (The berserker and rampage's air heavy multi-hits, the magus's standing heavy throws out a magic blade). Add to that procedurally generated roguelite gameplay, with items to build to enhance yourself, and new moves to use either dropped from bosses or bought with souls, a currency best recieved by keeping your style bar cranked to maximum and never getting hit. The game largely avoid an old and tired facet of roguelike games, wherein they try to offset the frustration of a lost run's lost progress by giving a player outside currency or permanent unlocks that allow access to new items - the system is prevalent in that one needs to reach higher ranks to unlock all the characters, but none of the playstyles are strictly any better than any of the others, and one could just as easily play the game through as a Knight, a starting class, as much as the Rampager, the most prestigiously barred one. The game somewhat makes up for it's lack of standard repertoire in a spectacle fighter with the addition of multiple special moves, with abilities ranging from the standard knife throw to boomerang-like magic blades and lightning-fast slash combinations and slash-dashes. Even the character not particularly focused on using these abilities can easily put them to highly effective use, as the system allows one to cancel any standard into any special move. Cancelling as a system overall rewards skill in a player by granting reduced periods of ending lag to players who can enter their attacks, blocks, or dodges in perfect timing with the previous action, encouraging players to learn the rhythm of the combat. Overall, this game really needs more exposure, though, considering I can go look at the Steam Charts and find the days I've been playing by looking at the player count increase from 0 to 1. I bid the creator the utmost luck in moving this game forward and I hope I hear a lot more about this game in the public discourse sooner rather than later, or worse, not at all.
The game is a ton of fun especially if you blast forces, sign, or even hai yo
This game is actually really good. Its a really ugly game. The art isn't great. That said, the gameplay is phenomenal. I can't believe how good it is. I mean it is super enjoyable and difficult. You feel super awesome clearing rooms perfectly and then boom dead. You have to be on point all of the time. The upgrades are plentiful, you don't feel like you are sitting there getting strung along. Constant upgrades and you get more souls the more butt you kick and the game gets harder. Its super fun and I love it.
Wasteland Rampage is a roguelite game that should not be judged based on its looks. It has some pretty good mechanics and very satisfying combat. The main point of the game is obviously the combat and it feels extremely fun when hitting enemies or comboing them. It actually has a surprising amount of depth involved in the combat to become good at the game when the screen is flooded with enemies. The online co-op works well and is pretty fun to play with a friend hacking and slashing around. The one complaint could be said that the game looks a bit outdated but when playing it this becomes completely unimportant and you will easily ignore it.
Amazing game!!! But I still wonder if there can be a remake of graphics
I love the game, it feels really good (can't emphasize this enough), it needs fixing some [strike] game breaking bugs like this one (time of recording Feb 22, 2019)[/strike] IT'S BEEN FIXED and the crude graphics may turn off some potential buyers (as someone on my stream pointed out), but please do not let those graphics (and bug) fool you, this game FEELS really good, you need to check it out.
Absolutely underrated diamond. If this dev had an artist on board he'd be unstoppable.
