The game that contradicts itself. In Beastrun, auto battling is the only option. The adventuring part doesn't require your input at all, so the developers kindly implemented an auto button to autoprogress one battle after another without your input. But at the same time, the game doesn't want you to be fully idle because it requires you to click open chests every other stage. Do you want us to idle, or not? With how grindy the game already is it wouldn't have hurt to make the game to play repeated rounds of itself automatically unless the player prompts it to stop. I like the concept of cute animals beating each other to death and the simple, prettiness of the UI, but no. It doesn't take long for chest openings to become an annoyance, and the game requires a constant internet connection (yes, this is an online only game). It's sad. This was so close to being an okay game.

Beastrun is a compact yet thoughtfully designed strategy experience that exemplifies Sokpop Collective’s talent for distilling complex ideas into small, focused games. At a glance, it presents itself as a simple auto-battler, but beneath that minimal surface lies a game that is far more about planning, experimentation, and observing systems interact than about moment-to-moment control. Rather than asking players to issue commands in real time, Beastrun places its emphasis almost entirely on preparation: assembling a team of animal units, equipping them with skills and items, and then letting the results play out. This hands-off approach creates a calm, almost meditative rhythm where success feels earned through foresight and understanding rather than reflexes. The core of Beastrun revolves around party composition and synergy. Each creature brings its own abilities and combat role, and the real challenge comes from finding combinations that complement one another in interesting ways. Skills and items interact through status effects, timing, and positioning, and even small changes in loadout can dramatically alter how a battle unfolds. Some builds focus on attrition and debuffs, slowly wearing enemies down, while others lean into burst damage, speed, or defensive layering. Watching these strategies play out automatically can be surprisingly engaging, as victories often hinge on whether carefully chosen synergies align as intended. When they do, battles feel elegant and satisfying; when they don’t, the failure usually points clearly back to a flaw in planning rather than to random chance. Progression in the game is structured through several modes that encourage replay and experimentation. The main adventure path gradually ramps up difficulty, introducing new challenges and unlocking additional options that broaden strategic possibilities. Alongside this, alternative modes such as arena-style encounters and dungeon challenges add twists through modifiers and tougher opponents, pushing players to rethink established builds and try unconventional approaches. While the overall amount of content is modest compared to larger strategy games, the variety of combinations available gives Beastrun a surprising amount of longevity, especially for players who enjoy testing ideas simply to see how they behave in practice. Visually and audibly, the game is deliberately restrained. The presentation favors clarity over spectacle, with simple layouts that make it easy to track what is happening without distraction. Characters and environments are functional rather than flashy, reinforcing the abstract nature of the gameplay. Combat animations are minimal, but this simplicity keeps attention focused on cause and effect rather than visual noise. The sound design follows the same philosophy, providing light musical backing and subtle effects that support the experience without drawing attention away from the strategic layer. What ultimately defines Beastrun is its willingness to be quiet and patient. It does not chase constant excitement or dramatic presentation, and it is unapologetically slow-burn in its appeal. For some players, this passivity can feel underwhelming, as the lack of direct control during battles may give the impression of detachment. For others, that same design choice is precisely what makes the game compelling, turning it into a playground for experimentation where the joy comes from thinking, tweaking, and observing outcomes over time. Taken as a whole, Beastrun is a clear reflection of Sokpop Collective’s experimental spirit. It is not designed to compete with large-scale strategy titles or to appeal to everyone, but to offer a concise and distinctive take on automated combat and party building. Players who enjoy theory-crafting, discovering emergent interactions, and engaging with systems at a conceptual level are likely to find it quietly rewarding. In its small scope and deliberate pacing, Beastrun succeeds as a thoughtful, niche experience that invites curiosity and rewards careful consideration rather than demanding constant attention. Rating: 5/10
Nice game, good idea and potential genre. It became a part of my screen now since you dont need to do anything during battles.
Played on Steam Deck. Too much of a forced grind, which would be ok if the auto play didn't stop every other run for the player to tap tap tap open a chest.
It isn't bad; nor is it good. It kinda just is... Mechanically it is as interactive as most clicker/idle games, but you can't just run it in the background and forget about it either. The auto feature only removes about 80% of the clicks you need to do to earn your rewards, meaning that you constantly have to check back on it. This pulls away just enough attention that it prevents itself from neatly sliding into the niche other idle games have, but isn't substantial enough to actually reward the time spent paying attention to it. The only reason I have put as many hours into as I have is just because I've committed myself to getting all the achievements. As for the actual strategy, it's fine. There are a fair number of fun builds to toy with, but there is a clear, singular, dominant strategy at the end of everything. At that point, it is just a matter of grinding until your stuff is better than their stuff.
